Ozment a native of Talbot Co., MD who "stabbed to death" John A. Catrop "in an altercation on Friday night (8 Sept. 1848)". SOURCES: (1)9 Sept.. 1848 Easton Gazette, and (2) a letter written to himself "beginning in March 1850" in the biograpy of Lemon John Catrop describing the incident involving his great-uncle. This original work is at the The Maryland Historical Society in Baltimore. The purported cause of this fight is another story! 9 Dec. 1848 Easton Gazette stated -"Thomas B. Ozment, a native of Talbot County but now of Mississippi, accused of the murder of John A. Catrop, was acquitted by a jury last Saturday at the county court". This information was in a letter to me from Bernice Leonard, historian and author of several books, St. Michaels, MD, who's daughter-in-law is related to John (A)lexander Catrop. Mrs. Leonard added : "What makes this affair even more tragic is that these two men may have been related; since a marriage between 'an' Elizabeth Catrop and Henry Ozment took place in Talbot Co, 11 April 1797". Thomas B. Ozment most likely is the same Thomas Ozment buried in Jackson, MS in 1851. Dwight W. Ozment Richmond, VA

John Jasper had only 2 daughters that I know of. I know nothing of the older one, Margaret R., b. ~1836 to John J. and Isabel Murchison Ozment. Leah Luanna Ozment, b. 1850 to John J. and Margaret E. Morgan Ozment, married J. L. Clark in Cooke Co., TX on May 15, 1869, marriage performed by J.F. Olson, Minister of God. License issued 13 May. Marriage License, Texas, Cooke County, Vol. 2, p. 283. Caroline Miller
In the censuses for NC in both 1820 and 1830, Ozment heads of household appear primarily in Guilford County, but the indexes do not show a John among this group. The only John is in Stokes County, NC in 1820, on p. 51. Of the children of John Jasper Ozment, I have found my ancestor Andrew Clinton Ozment in 1870 and 1880 Cooke Co., TX: Andrew C. Ozment (and Mack [Murdock Macintosh], William D. [likely William Henry, older brother to Andrew], James T. [James Jasper] and David B. [David Bruer/Brewer] Ozment) are listed in the TX, Cook Co, Gainsville Prec . 1870 census, p.238 and 244, living in adjacent dwellings (#95, 98, 99). Are brothers, with different mothers. "Andy C. Ozment" is listed in 1870 as a "Teamster" 26 years of age, born in Mississippi. He cannot read nor write. His wife, Melinda M., age 19, was born in Missouri, can read and write ; they have an 8-month old baby girl, Martha L., born in September 1869 in TX. Cooke County Land Grants were issued to J.Ozment, Abstract #809; to M.Ozment, Abstract #804; to J.Ozment, Abstract #807. Abstracts on file at the county courthouse and at the Texas General Land Office at Austin, TX. The 1880 Cooke County, TX Census, Precinct No. 3, Supervisors District #3, E.D. 114, Page 33 lists Andy Ozment, white male age 30, married, Farmer, born [Mississippi?], father born in N.Carolina; his wife is Margret, age 30, born in [Mississippi or Missouri], her father born in Tennessee; children are Martha, age 10, Mary age 7, Margret age 4 , Robert age 7/12, all born in Texas, with their father born in Missippi (sic). This family has the same parents as the 1870 entry, with a transposed wife's name [Margaret instead of Malinda; her name was Margaret Malinda Pierce]. Andy's age should also be 36, not 30. Andy and Malinda were married in Cooke Co., TX on 14 Jan 1869. Caroline Miller

Also, (para.2).... correct "McVairy Co.,TN" to read McNairy Co., TN. >> Thanks Dwight. I had concluded that the V. Ozment in 1850 TX couldn't possibly be the one in IN in 1820 and thought he might be a son. I was excited because he said he was born in NC and then went to TN. I haven't seen any signs of this guy in NC, have you? Would you be able to send me what you have on this line? I would love to add it to my file. Eleanor
Eleanor, I believe the Varnum OZMENT referred to in my last reply, para. 2, was actually Varnum OZMENT (2), b. 1782, NC, who "homesteaded" the land in Shelby Co., IN in 1820. He probably gave this land to a son (Varnum OZMENT (3), b.1816), when he became 18. According to Winifred Ozment Johnson's records, Varnum OZMENT (1), estimated b. abt. 1761, was a "French Hugonaut". Possible lead? All of this needs to be varified. Tradition, in those early days, to name sons after fathers sure has created a lot of confusion ! Also, (para.2).... correct "McVairy Co.,TN" to read McNairy Co., TN. Regards, Dwight W. Ozment
