He was born September 10, 1921 at Sumpter, a son of the late Robert Shelby Ozment and Emma Glennon Ozment. He was a retired farmer and construction worker, a WWII U. S. Army Aircorp veteran, a member of Bald Island Hunting Club and the Sumpter Hunting Club and a member of First Assembly of God Church in Warren. Surviving is his wife, Evelene Brown Ozment, whom he married on July 25, 1942; 1 son, Jerry Ozment of Crossett; 2 daughters, Carla Gill of Warren and Donna Rainey of Sumpter; 1 brother, Al Rainey of Sumpter; 7 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by a brother, William Bill Ozment, and 3 sisters, Gladys Richards, Oleta Brown, and Ethan Corker. Funeral services were Sunday, March 11, at Frazers Chapel with Rev. Jim Bales and Rev. Wayman Mann officiating. Janice Sullivan was the organist and Mary Robbins was the soloist. Burial was in Outlaw Cemetery by Frazers Funeral Home. Active pallbearers were Bill Jones, Dale Wolfe, Roy Forrest, Bobby Ray Wilson, Steve Parnell, Felton Jones, Wayne Griffin and Ray Marcantel. P. Scurlock, decd given about the 17th of August last, and due ninety days after date. Now if I should will and truly pay the aforesaid debts and interest by the 1st day of March next, then this obligation to be void, but if I fail to do so, then the said George Naylor shall after giving 10 days notice expose the cotton to the highest bidder for cash, and appropriate the proceeds, first, to the payment of all necessary costs, and secondly to the payment of said debts, and lastly if any left, pay over to me. Witnesseth that for and in consideration of the sum of two hundred and fifty dollars to me in hand paid by the said Alex McCearley, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged have this day bargained sold and conveyed & confirmed unto the said Alexander McCearley his heirs and assigns forever all that certain tract or parcel of land situate lying & being in the County of Hardeman and on the waters of Clover Creek, a branch of Hatchie River and containing by survey 200 acres granted by the State of Tennessee to me the said Samuel Ozment on the 1st of December 1852 in Range 1 and 2 & Sec 6, Dist. 10. Beginning at a white oak and pointers 154 poles West of the South West corner of No. 411 for 1000 A. made in the name of A. Jones & now West with the same 123 poles to a stake with P.O. and redoak pointer the NE C of Entry No. 1515 for 139 A. Thence South passing the same at 246 in all 260 poles to a stake with white oak and span oak & P. oak pointers. Thence East 123 poles to a dogwood with span oak R oak and W oak pointers. Thence So 7 poles to a W. O. with spanish oak & hickory pointers. Thence East 21 poles to a stake in the stage road with 3 blk jack pointers. Thence N. 18 1/2 E 30 poles. Thence N. 20 poles. Thence No. 34 1/2 W 8 poles to a stake W. oak & hickory pointers. Thence West 58 poles to a stake blk oak & W. oak pointers. Thence N. 52 poles to a black oak bush, with 2 post oak & 2 black oak pointers. Thence East 28 poles to a stake with 3 black oak pointers. Thence N. 163 poles to the Beginning to have & to hold the aforesaid lands with all & singular the rights profits emoluments, hereditaments and appurtenances of in and to the same belonging or in anywise appertaining to the only proper use, benefit & behoof of him the said Alex McCearley, his heirs and assigns forever & the said Samuel Ozment for himself, his heirs, executors or administrators does hereunto covenant and agree to and with the said McCearley, his heirs and assigns that the before recited tract of land and bargained premises be & they will warrant and forever defend the right to the & relinquish claim of the said land to the said Alexander his heirs and assigns forever against the right title or claim of all & every person or persons whatever claim in the same or any part thereof. Eighteen hundred and forty four between Samuel Ozment of the one part and G. S. Gibson of the other part both of the County of Hardeman and State of Tennessee. Witnesseth that the said Samuel Ozment for and in consideration of the sum of one dollar to him in hand paid the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged hath given granted bargained and sold and these presents doth give grant bargain and sell align release convey and confirm unto the said G. S. Gibson his heirs and assigns three certain bay mares, thirty three head of stock hogs, one ____ & twenty one ________________ six head of cattle this conveyance is more or less made in trust and for the use and purposes hereinafter maintained and declared and none other that is to say whereas the said Samuel Ozment justly indebted to Daniel S. Offrens in the sum of one hundred and ten dollars and 61 cents in a judgment in Esq. T. M. Chadick office and William Comer has this day set his name attesting to the said Judgment as is also indebted to diverse other persons to an amount granted as he apprehends then he will be able to pay and being anxious to _____ the said William Comer in preference to his other creditors now therefor this indenture witnesseth that in case the said Samuel Ozment shall will and truly pay and satisfy the said debt and ______ when it shall come due and payable then this conveyance is to be void and of no effect otherwise the said G. S. GIbson shall take possession of the property hereby conveyed and after giving two days notice at the court house in the town of Bolivar and at the Election Ground and those other public places in the neighborhood of the time and place shall expose the same the sale to the highest bidder for cash and after having first paid the expenses of such sale and the other expenses attending the execution of this trust shall pay the balance the creditor above mentioned and the balance if any of said proceeds remain in his hands he shall pay over to the same Samuel Ozment or to his order it is expressly understood and agreed by the parties that untill default be made in the payment of said sum of money said Samuel Ozment is to remain in feasible and undisturbable possession and enjoyment of the property herein before mentioned and conveyed in witness whereof I have set my hand and seal this date above written. On the 1790 Guilford Co, NC census I found the following OSBURN/OSBORNs: Pg. 152 Richard Osburn, Sr (01-01-02-00-00) (There was also a John OSMENT) James & Samuel Osburn (Elisha Stack, John & Wm. Russel and a John Climer) Pg. 153 Joseph Osborn David & Wm. Osburn (2) John Osburns (Sr & Jr) Pg. 154 No Osburn/Osborns Jacob Weatherly Wm. Rankin (I read just the other day that he'd migrated from DE in 1787) Pg. 155 David, John & Peter Osburn My question is ... were any of these actually OZMENTs (especially Richard Osburn, Sr, pg. 152)? I have undergone a project as far as these census' pages and am finding that there were MANY settlers there from the Eastern Shore. On pg. 152 alone, the NIX's (NICKS), SULLIVANs, SHERWOOD and UNDERWOOD (add'l names I've found) were all from the Dorchester/Talbot/Caroline Co, MD. area. Thanks. Marsha IL

See the gif here, right-hand column: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nc/guilford/census/1790/494-95.gif I can add to this discussion that my Celia Ozment b1819 in Guilford, has her name entered 4 times on her marriage bond in Wilson Co TN as OSBURN, then on the marriage license issued by the County Clerk same day, as both OSBURN and OZBURN, and finally in the Justice of the Peace's own hand on the back of the marriage bond, she is certified married as Celia OZMENT. Her death certificate from Graves Co KY in 1886 reads OZMENT, the name given to the clerk by her children, and the cemetery record of her burial indicates Sealy OZIMENT. These permutations perhaps argue that the person writing down the data may have spelled what he thought he heard, rather than asking for the name to be spelled to him. [I have a well-documented MacDougall line on my father's side and can find record of every conceivable spelling, from Scottish Parish Records to Missouri cemetery records: MacDougall, McDougall, MacDougal, McDougal for my specific family-- it is a nightmare. Even the last living descendant of the line, my college-educated, genealogist grandmother, spelled it variously throughout her life.] I am fairly convinced my Celia is a d/o Richard b:1791 (m:Rebecca Pavey) the s/o Samuel who appears in the 1790 census. Is it possible Samuel, and then his son Richard, continued to use the spelling OZBURN interchangeably?
