Thank you I agree with the first part but that is all I know But I am not sure about the Charles I will have to take another look at this before I change my work. Don't get me wrong I want to do the best I can for My Gran I do not want to make things up Thank you again Back to the drawing board for me Jill -----Original Message----- From: Craig Pickup Sent: Wednesday, June 06, 2012 7:00 AM To: oxfordshire@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [OXF] Hook Norton Hope this may help eliminate some of the Josephs from the picture. Joseph, a widow, married Mary WIDDOWS in 1827 (it makes you wonder if the marriage state had been confused with the maiden name). In 1828 Joseph, a labourer, and Mary had a child, Charles Edward. The family are said to be from Hook Norton. The 1841 census shows a Joseph and Mary (Marcy on Ancestry) living in Hook Norton with 6 children, the oldest being Charles (age 11). Joseph is described as a gardener. The couple are also shown on the 1851 census for Hook Norton, still described as a gardener. Joseph PAINTING, age 55, born Finstock, appears in the 1851 census for Stonesfield, married to Martha. Joseph PAINTIN (wid) married Martha STONE, 31 May 1830 at Stonesfield. This would appear to be the Joseph baptized in Charlbury in 1797, son of Edward & Elizabeth. This eliminates the first Joseph baptized in Charlbury as the husband of Mary WIDDOWS. It does leave him open however as a possible husband of Mary EDNEY. The Joseph who married Elizabeth HADLON in 1823 had as a witness Mary Ann PAINTIN. Assuming this Mary Ann was Joseph's sibling, there were 4 Mary Ann PAINTINs baptized in Charlbury around the relevant time. One in 1802 to Jonathan & Susanna and one in 1805 to Elisha & Elizabeth. Neither of these couples appeared to have a son called Joseph baptized in Charlbury, so I would discount them. A third Mary Ann was baptized in 1809 making her only about 14 at the time of the 1823 marriage, so a little too young to be a witness. This would leave Mary Ann baptized in 1801 daughter of Richard & Liddy. So my deduction would put the Joseph married to Elizabeth HADLON as the son of Richard and Lydia baptized in 1804. The 1861 census shows a Joseph PAINTON, age 57, widr, as a lodger with William and Sarah PAINTON. Both Joseph and William have the professions of carpenter. The father of this Joseph, Richard is also shown on the 1841 census as a carpenter. So this seems to be a family occupation. This would rule out this Joseph, son of Richard as the one who married Mary WIDDOWS in 1827, described as a gardener. So this leaves either Joseph son of Stephen and Mary or Joseph son of John and Ann as the Joseph who married Mary WIDDOWS while the other married Mary GARDNER. The one marrying Mary GARDNER died in 1841. Neither Mary EDNEY nor Elizabeth HADLON appears to have had children before they died. Either the husband of Martha STONE or the husband of Mary WIDDOWS could have been the husband of Mary EDNEY. If you find the missing marriage, then this might help pin down which it was. Hope that helps a little. :) On Tue, Jun 5, 2012 at 10:24 AM, Joe Emery <joeemery@btinternet.com> wrote: > Jill. > Joseph was a widower when he married Mary Widdows in 1827. Hello Jill. Charles Edward Paintin was bapt. at Charlbury on 18.9.1828 son of Joseph & Mary. lab. of Hook Norton. PR. I have this, and most West Oxon.parishes, on my computer. The baptisms on "2.10.1859 of Paynton, Ann Maria dau. of James & Louisa, lab. and of Barnes/Paynton, James, illegitimate son of Louisa Barnes, spinster when the child was born - but now the wife of James Paynton.(child about 1/12 years old" are as written in the Hook Norton PRs. The OxFHS Marriage Index for 1538-1837 has no Painting married to a Long. My wife Beryl's mother was Eva Annie Painting of Charlbury b.1896 and her line goes back 10 generations to John Peyton Snr. b.1610 Kings Stanley,Glos.and Susanna Patye b.1617 Burford. so too long to send here.
