    3. Joe your name is familiar to me? I think years ago we spoke. I am not going to agree with you here? I never found the word widow before and ?I donot think this is correct PHOTO - I have photo of James and Louisa Painting if you would like a copy. Here is what I have written years ago - Joseph PAINTON was twenty ones years old and living in Hook Norton in 1819. During that year he was the subject of a ‘removal order’ issued on 7 December 1819, which ordered him to leave Hook Norton and return to his native place of Finstock. A Removal Order was usually issued when a person became dependent on a parish that they were not born in. As Finstock was where Joseph was born he was sent back home. This means the church elders gave him some money for travelling and sent him off. The reason for a male to be issued an order usually meant that he could not find work; and the town could not afford to keep him. About ten years after this Joseph moved back to Hook Norton with his wife Mary and son Charles. It is where they settled for the rest of their lives and six of their 7 children were born there. Mary WIDDOWS was the second and last daughter of William WIDDOWS and Mary HUNTLY. Their children were all baptised at Charlbury as “son or daughter of William and Mary WIDDOWS of Walcott”. Joseph was a widower when he married Mary Widdows in 1827. His first wife was almost certainly Mary (or Maria) Edney whom he married on 10.10.1822 at Charlbury and who, I feel sure, was buried there on 12.10.1825 "wife of Joseph, age 20" I say 'almost certainly' for on 25.6.1823 an Elizabeth Painten age "19 wife of Joseph" was also buried at Charlbury - so who knows ? On 3.3.1824 at Charlbury an Edward Paintin was bapt. son of Joseph & Mary, baker,of Charlbury. Now The Joseph who married Mary Widdows was a gardener and still was in 1841 and 1851 at Hook Norton ...so I don't think that Edward was a son of Mary Edney. As you will know, four Joseph Paintin/Paintons...were bapt. at Charlbury within 7 years of each other viz. in 1797 son of Edward & Elizabeth; 1798 there were two, one a son of Stephen & Mary and the other a son of John & Ann - and in 1804 a son of Richard and Lydia. It was probably three of those who married at Charlbury within 5 years of each other, one to Edney in 1822; one to Hadlon in 1823 and another to Gardner also in 1823, and one to Widdows in 1827 whom I think had firstly married Edney. But because in none of those marriages are the parents mentioned in the Parish Registers it is impossible to say which Joseph married when and to whom. Unless they appear in other documents that show their relationship to their parents, that position will not alter. I have 12 different ways of spelling Paintin and the family is one great tangled problem. 3. Thanks Jill. Yes, likewise, we must have corresponded before. All the material facts contained in my last message were straight copies from the Charlbury Parish Registers as they appear in the OxFHS CD, where their marriage entry shows him as a widower upon marriage to Mary Widdows. There will always be the uncertainty about the identities of the Josephs on marriage. Is there any evidence at all to properly identify which Joseph was returned to Finstock ?
