I am new to the list and I am attempting to find the parents of a Paul Hicks who was a grocer in Oxford. He died in 1839 and the age on his death certificate has him as 62,which would give his birth at about 1777. The Baptism Index has a Paul Hicks parents Paul & Elizabeth Oxford St.Giles 1776 The informant on the death certificate is given as a Susan Parsons who made her mark X Presumably Susan Parsons was a domestic servant and as such not too sure of her masters age. However an obituary in Jackson's Oxford Journal of 13th April 1839 has the following:- "Mr Hicks resided during NEARLY (my capitals) the whole of his life in this his native city" >From this it seems as if he could have born some where other than Oxford. Is there anyone on the list who is also researching Oxfordshire Hicks' who could help? One further point, from the newspaper obituary, that I would very much like to enlarge upon is the following sentence:- "During the late war he was for some years a member of the Oxford Regiment of Volunteers, passing through various gradations from private to Captain" I assume that this unit was a Home Guard type organisation raised to combat any invasion from France during the Napoleonic War. Where could I find more information on this and do muster rolls exist? Peter Taylor Glossop Derbyshire
