Consider the spelling carefully, 'n' & 'm' used to be written in such a way that today they could be read as 'u' & 'w'. The old 'u' & 'w' would be very similar, this along with open top 'o' & 'a' transcribed my name Powles as Panles in the LDS version of the 1881 census. The transcription would be dependent on how the transcriber reads the original.
