Hello Eunice, Brookhampton is a tithing of Newington near Wallingford, then in Berkshire. The 1871 Census of Newington (Piece 1273, Folio 27) has this entry: PAYNE George HD m 36, General Carrier, BRK Brookhampton PAYNE Charlotte M, WI m 33, ---, MDX Hoxton PAYNE Agnes Emily, DA 5, Scholar, BKM High Wycombe PAYNE Thomas James, SO 3, ---, BKM High Wycombe PAYNE Maria Lilian, DA 11m, ---, BRK Brookhampton Note the gap in the family for Annie Maria, who would have been aged about 9 in 1871. Curiously, and certainly against the regulations, George PAYNE was also recorded at High Wycombe in the 1871 Cansus (Piece 1403, Folio 21). He was staying at Payne's Yard off the High Street, and his daughter Ann was with him: PAYNE George, HD m 36, Carrier, BRK Brookhampton PAYNE Maria, MO m 73, Annuitant, OXF Hasley [Haseley?] PAYNE Ann, DA 9, Scholar, BKM Wycombe PAYNE William, SO 7, Scholar, BKM Wycombe + a male servant One could assume that Payne's Yard was so called because the Carrier had been based there for some years. But was his base really in High Wycombe? Although George was (twice) recorded as having originated in Brookhampton, his baptism in c1834 is not recorded in the Newington parish register. Could this entry in FreeBMD be Annie Maria's birth? September Quarter 1862 - PAYNE Annie Maria, Hackney Registration District, Ref: 1b.350 Did Charlotte go back to her home for the birth of her first baby? (Hoxton is in Hackney Registration District in northeast London.) In FreeBMD has this marriage entry: George PAYNE married Charlotte Maria CLARKSON in the Wycombe Registration District in the September Quarter 1860, Ref: 3a.534 Birth and Marriage Certificates can be bought on-line for £9.25 each at www.direct.gov.uk/gro quoting the above Dates and References. Many many thanks to Howard for information regarding my Paynes of Brookhamstead, much appreciated. Also to Paul Bettridge, the snippets from JOJ are particularly interesting and helpful. Your responses were much appreciated, and have enabled me to tie up one little mystery surrounding this family (and created several more as well, as is always the case !)
