    3. Dear Eunice and Howard, > Brookhampton is a tithing of Newington near Wallingford, then in > Berkshire. Just to clarify, Wallingford was then in Berkshire, but Brookhampton was not. > The 1871 Census of Newington (Piece 1273, Folio 27) has > this entry: > PAYNE George HD m 36, General Carrier, BRK Brookhampton > PAYNE Charlotte M, WI m 33, ---, MDX Hoxton > PAYNE Agnes Emily, DA 5, Scholar, BKM High Wycombe > PAYNE Thomas James, SO 3, ---, BKM High Wycombe > PAYNE Maria Lilian, DA 11m, ---, BRK Brookhampton My reading gives the county name as "Oxfordshire" for both George and Maria Lilian. And I think that Charlotte's name is in full "Charlotte Maria" - which matches the FreeBMD marriage Howard found. (But the writing is not the most beautiful.) > ... > Curiously, and certainly against the regulations, George PAYNE was > also recorded at High Wycombe in the 1871 Cansus (Piece 1403, Folio > 21). Doubtless wrong, but hardly surprising for a carrier. > ... > But was his base really in High > Wycombe? Although George was (twice) recorded as having originated in > Brookhampton, his baptism in c1834 is not recorded in the Newington > parish register. While Brookhampton may have been the name of a tithing in Newington, it is physically difficult to distinguish from Stadhampton, and there is a possible family in Stadhampton. The OFHS transcript has an entry in "1835", apparently with no more precise date, of "Geo: PAIN son of Wm: and M..., labourer, of Brookhampton". There are other entries which give the names of both parents - for example, "12 September 1841, Maria daughter of William and Maria PAIN, Brookhampton, butcher". The name of the mother matches the High Wycombe census. There seem to be a total of 7 children in Stadhampton between 1817 and 1841. The most likely marriage in Oxfordshire seems to be between William PAINE and Maria HOWES in Thame on 13 October 1816. They are both described as "otp", but that's probably not significant. There is a baptism for a Maria HOWS (daughter of Richard and Elizabeth) at Great Haseley on 17 April 1796, which once again is reasonably close to the High Wycombe census entry. The family seem to be living in High Wycombe in 1851 (HO 107/1719 folio 142 page 2). William PAYNE's birthplace is given as Chiselhampton, and his age then as 56. He is a "waggon master". There is an advertisement in Jackson's Oxfordshire Journal of 14 August 1858 in which "All persons having any claim or demand against the estate of Mr. JOHN PAYNE, late of Brookhampton, Oxon, butcher and carrier, deceased are requested to send the particulars thereof to Mr William Payne, of Witney, Oxon, carrier...". The notice is dated from Brookhampton, by the way. There are quite a number of other entries in JOJ which refer to William Payne, carrier, of Witney. This must be a brother of the George - according to the 1861 census, he was a carrier aged 39 and born in Brookhampton (RG9/907 fol 63 page 14). He was baptised in 1823. The John who died in 1858 is recorded in the Stadhampton register as John PAYNE, aged 40, of Brookhampton in Newington. Another brother. George Payne himself appears in JOJ of 12 June 1880 as the owner of a horse which had been worked in an unfit state. He is described as a carrier, of High Wycombe. Also charged in respect of the same horse was George Eustace, of Brookhampton, carter. Also in JOJ of 22 May 1858 is the prosecution of "Samuel Shaw, of High Wycombe, servant to Mr Payne, carrier, of Brookhampton". I suppose this may be George too. > ... > information regarding Annie Maria Payne, who was born about 1862. I > think her father MAY have been George Payne, born Brookhampton c. 1834. It seems pretty likely, based on the census and FreeBMD entries Howard found, and the constant connection with the carrying trade, High Wycombe, and Brookhampton. George PAIN baptised 1835, son of William and Maria, formerly HOWES William PAYNE, baptised at Chiselhampton, 25 December 1793, son of Thomas and Elizabeth. (in OFHS Stadhampton transcript) There was a 73 year old Elizabeth PAYNE living at Chiselhampton in 1841. A Thomas PAYNE of Chiselhampton was buried 1 October 1835, aged 65. Thomas might be the one baptised at Chiselhampton 26 Nov 1769, son of James and Rebecca. James PAIN and Rebecca GOODWIN married at Chiselhampton 31 July 1766. I can't see anything clear before then.
