    1. [OXF] Oxfordshire FHS meeting - Monday 24 October 2011
    2. All The next meeting of the Oxfordshire Family History Society will take place on Monday 24 October 2011 at the usual venue at Exeter Hall, Oxford Road, Kidlington, Oxford OX5 1AB. Doors open at 7.15pm for coffee, help with both genealogy and computers, and the bookstall, exchange journals and the library. The subject of the talk is "Murder and Mayhem on the Midland", which will be presented by Chris and Judy Rouse. This couple have combined their joint interests in family history and railway history, and since 1999 have been compiling an index of people, together with their details, who came into contact with the Midland Railway from its formation in 1844 to 1923, when it became part of the LMS. Their index currently comprises 38,000 names, of which 20,000 relate to staff. The talk "Murder and Mayhem on the Midland" takes an in depth look at three particular incidents that Chris and Judy have discovered during their researches - an accident, a suicide and a murder. They use these three as examples to show family historians how a one small snippet of information can be built up to make a detailed story through the use of common records such as newspapers, Assize records, census and parish records, railway staff ledgers, military and on line sources etc. All members, potential members and their guests are welcome.
