Good Morning all, Talking about "Harcourt" on the list at present........... Could anyone please give me any advice as to where - if possible - can I search (electronically) for information about the staff of Lord Harcourt from approx 1895 to 1930's ? My grandfather (KITCHING Charles Edward Victor) was a gamesman / grounds man for Lord Harcourt (at Nuneham Courtney?) , and I believe 'lived on' the estate premises at some stage. I had on my list 'to do' in the near future, to write to the estate, and see what I could find out - but if there is any way I can do any online investigation it would be of tremendous help, Kind regards to all, Lyn Rumble Rushworth, Victoria 3612, Australia e: treehouse152@gmail.com w: http://ironbarkstudio.wordpress.com -----Original Message----- From: oxfordshire-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:oxfordshire-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Jill Muir Sent: Thursday, 6 October 2011 5:51 PM To: oxfordshire@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [OXF] Researching at the Bodleian (Stanton Harcourt, 1700s) Hi Heather, Greetings from Kingston Bagpuize. Hello Lyn, I did a quick search and according to wikipedia, the house is currently owned by Oxford University. I would send an email to them to see if they have any record of your grandfather. Hi Lyn (and this may be of interest to Heather too), The Bodleian's Harcourt collection is catalogued on their website. The part relating to the running of the estate is here: http://www.bodley.ox.ac.uk/dept/scwmss/wmss/online/1500-1900/harcourt-estate/harcourt-estate.html The bottom two thirds of the page (section P) deals with all the accounts - most of it relates to the period 1880-1940 or so; I expect there would be items of interest to you. As for finding any of the actual content (e.g. employees' names) online, I am doubtful. It's a big collection and not of very broad appeal. I wonder if we can persuade some penniless students to delve into it for us :) Regards, Kev.
Hello Lyn, http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/a2a/records.aspx?cat=161-csac106385&cid=1 #1 which is A2A shows that many records are held at Oxford University, Bodleian Library, Special Collections and Western Manuscripts, which brings us back full circle on this list subject I believe! You won't be able to access data such as this online I'm afraid. You could email Exeter and All Souls Colleges of course, and if they are not too busy they may be able to tell you if they hold these papers.
