Thanks to Wendy, Brad, Paul & John for feedback. I looked back at Howard Benbrooks presentation on Cardinal Points, as Paul suggested, and it was interesting. One thing was that new was that each Church began its page with an odd number (RH page). The other was that "doing Cardinal Points is is laborious". Whilst there is loads of information on the Volume & Pages, there none is available for content of the pages i.e. where the marriage took place. OFHS has probably the best Marriage Index of any society and as Wendy says a real bonus where one is available. The Guild of One-Name Studies, of which I am a member, does this sort of Cardinal Point project as an aid to marriage identification. If you look at 1st Qtr 1838 I supplied earlier, (almost completed for Headington District) it has most of the churches identified. However most quarters have about one third of the total in other than C/E churches. Spent the last two days checking out and logging Headington marriages 1837-1900. Why? Not sure. So there are approx (uncorrected) 22,000 individuals, which when tidied up should give between 10500/11000 marriages, of which two thirds should be in the Marriage Index. As no one responded to my list of marriages, (probable chose the worst possible), how about a any KNOWN register office marriages 1837 - 1851 inc? I feel that FreeBMD are owed a debt of gratitude for their superb index. As I find problems I always supply feedback. The census team on FmyP must really hate me after just completing, and correcting all the COPPOCK/COPPACK/COPPUCK entries over the last year. Best Wishes Dave David F. One comment on the excellent freebmd site - its is a pity that they chose to go down the GRO route rather than the local RO route that the UKbmd sites use as this gives you place of marriage. Check out www.yorkshirebmd.org.uk (www.ukbmd.org.uk has details of participating counties) for a view of this.
