    1. [OXF] Headington Registration District

    3. Hello All I'm trying to identify the places, that marriages occurred in the Headington Registration district between 1837 and 1851 inclusive. That is parishes, churches, chapels or registry office where the marriage took place. The General Record Office used, VOL 16 (1st July 1837 to 31st Dec 1851) and VOL 3A (1st Jan 1852 to 30th Jun 1932) Headington was abolished 1st Jan 1933 and the registers transferred to Oxford RD. Using Free BMD I recorded all Headington entries (1837-1851inc). After cleaning up and amending entries I now have a spreadsheet with 3734 PERSON entries. So 1867 marriages. The GRO index has a VOL & PAGE number against each person. When the marriages were supplied to the GRO, they recorded them on pages in alphabetical order, that is the Parishes in alphabetical order. So on a page they recorded say Beckley, Chippinghurst (Cuddesdon), Cowley etc. All parishes didn't have a marriage each quarter year so the list recorded differs each year. Beginning I'm using a list of Parishes and Churches from the Headington Website, but I'm not sure if its complete. BECKLEY (from1844) CHIPPINGHURST COWLEY CUDDESDON DENTON ELSFIELD FOREST HILL GARSINGTON HEADINGTON St Andrew Holy Trinity HOLTON HORSPATH HORTON cum STUDLEY IFFLEY LITTLEMORE (from1879) MARSTON OXFORD ST CLEMENT OXFORD ST GILES OXFORD ST JOHN the BAPTIST SHOTOVER SHOTOVER HILL PLACE STANTON ST JOHN STOWOOD STUDLEY (from 1844) WHEATLEY WOODEATON This has thrown up a few problems including 12 marriages (so far) which are not included in the GRO index. 8 of these are early Cuddesdon. I will send these in on a separate message in case they are marriages you want. What is the position regarding Oxford St John the Baptist. No mention in OFHS fiche/cds. Are these available at the Holford centre? I would like to send in some marriages later to see if anyone recognises them and where they took place. Any help appreciated. Best Wishes Dave David F. A few years ago transcribing death records for one of the UKbmd sites I realised that a whole quarter had not been included in the GRO - I came across the entry for my great grandfather (not in the GRO at the time) so I cross checked a sample of the rest of the entries. In the last year I have found several entries with the wrong first name; missing marriage partners; whole entries not there that are on parish records and in one case two brothers married in the same quarter same place - one brother given on GRO as married to other brother's wife; his wife and his brother both missing from the GRO. So I am with John - if the local records have been transcribed buy the CD and be grateful you are researching a county where these are available.
