Thank you to all who responded to my plea ! Yes Dave, but which of the three Georges is the son of John and Ann (mine) and which the son of James and Sarah and which the son of Joseph and Hannah !! ? I was trying to avoid buying at least two certificates which may be the only way to sort it out in the end. I think the marriages may have taken place in Clanfield (Witney RD) does anyone have the extended Clanfield transcripts (I have up to 1840ish) Thank you Elizabeth
you have at least part if this reply in yesterday's answer: the George who married Sarah Brooks on 29 Jan 1859 is son of Joseph; the George who married Rachel Hawkes has no father named this usually indicates that the parents were not married. However, if James or John died when George was small he may not have know his father's name. Freebmd has a marriage Sarah Clack to John Williams at Witney in 1849 Look at the censuses for 1841 (Stepping Stones cd has 4 of them in Witney area only one of whom has no father - Sarah's son), 1851 and 1861 to check out the various Georges. You can now look at censuses on line as I expect you know Wendy -----Original Message----- From: Elizabeth Adams Sent: Saturday, April 30, 2011 9:11 AM To: OXFORDSHIRE@rootsweb.com Subject: [OXF] George Clack Thank you to all who responded to my plea ! Hi ELizabeth >Yes Dave, but which of the three Georges is the son of John and Ann (mine) and which the son of James and Sarah and which the son of Joseph and Hannah !! ? Well, as I was trying to point out, the 1859 marriage was son of Joseph, so HE wasn't drowned :-) I'd kinda hoped (I didn't look up any baptisms) that one of the other two Georges had been illegitimate, so would have been the "father unknown" one. Clearly not so. >I was trying to avoid buying at least two certificates which may be the only way to sort it out in the end. >I think the marriages may have taken place in Clanfield (Witney RD) does anyone have the extended Clanfield transcripts (I have up to 1840ish) The marriages I quoted were from the later Clanfield PRs. The bits I left out were not IMO going to help you to distinguish -- and there were no CLACK witnesses. However: Nov 6 1858 George (X) CLACK ofa ba lab s not known Rachel HAWKES ofa sp servant d Thomas lab Wits: Olive HAWKES; Sarah HEMMINGS Jan 29 1859 George (X) CLACK ofa lab s Joseph lab Sarah (X) BROOKS 18 sp servant d Joseph lab Wits: Richard LARTER; Elizabeth YEATMAN . His death cert might or might not give his father's name (that seems to depend on whether he was regarded as a child or not). If it does, that would only leave you with one possibility. Censuses, however, seem to be the clue: The 1841 Clanfield census has your three Georges: Let's call them George I, George II and George III. George I is s John & Ann (age 2), siblings Aron, Noah George II is s Joseph & Hannah (age 4), siblings Elizabeth, Ann, Mary Ann. George III is in a more unusual household: Thomas RADBOURN 80 Mary RADBOURN 70 Sarah CLACK 25 Elizabeth RADBORN 7 Ellen CLACK 8 Caroline CLACK 6 George CLACK 3 Bear in mind that the adult ages were rounded down. So ... It appears that Sarah (who could be as old as 29) may already be a widow, in which case Wendy's suggestion that George might not have known his father's name could be spot-on. I might also speculate that Sarah was nee RADBO(U)RN, and/or that little Elizah, with her age transcribed wrong (why else does she appear before Ellen?) could have been Sarah's pre-marital daughter. So, let's see: Yep: Baptism Jun 6 1830 Eliza RADBOURNE d Sarah single woman Then, as you obviously know, she married James CLACK in 1832. Can't see a burial for James in Clanfield, but I didn't look very hard :-) The 1851 Clanfield census has two Georges: George I is s John (age 12) and has siblings Aaron & Noah (etc) George II is s Joseph (age 14).with siblings Elizabeth & Mary Ann Neither have mothers living with them in 1851. I can't see either Sarah or George III in Clanfield -- you could look for a remarriage for Sarah in FreeBMD etc. So it does look as though George III marr Rachel HAWKES and George II marr Sarah BROOKS. If so, we can guess that the George who drowned in 1852 was s John & Ann. Not what you want to hear :-( DaveB
