Several people offered help with my original query back in September 2010 and may be interested in the eventual outcome. It took a long time but documentary evidence has now been obtained which confirms the issue of a Silver War Badge to Private Carter in February 1919 and which therefore proved that he returned after being taken prisoner 1918. It was good to have our efforts vindicated; his name will not now be added erroneously to a monument to men who died in the Great War. Unfortunately we have still not traced where George came from or where he returned, with damaged health, after the war.
