All The next meeting of the Oxfordshire Family History Society will take place on Monday 27 June 2011 at the usual venue at Exeter Hall, Oxford Road, Kidlington, Oxford OX5 1AB. Doors open at 7.15pm for coffee, help with both genealogy and computers, and the bookstall, exchange journals and the library. After a brief AGM at 8.00pm, the subject of the talk is "The Saga of the Beckinghams and Kaiser Bill". This will be presented by Alex McGahey. Our speaker Alex McGahey is a retired bank official who now works for a local Oxfordshire charity. He is well-known in OFHS circles as a current member of the executive committee, as a recent Membership Secretary, and as a long-standing member of the Computer Group Panel. Alex has been researching his own family history since 1995 and has been conducting a "One-Name Study" of Beckingham, his maternal grandfather's name, since 2001. Alex became interested in World War I when he was given some papers relating to his Grandfather's military service. This prompted him to decide to ascertain who all of the nineteen Beckingham/Beckenham World War I casualties actually were, and how they fitted into his own family and other pedigrees. In 2002, Alex published the book that shares the name "The Saga of the Beckinghams and Kaiser Bill", although this also contains details of those of the Beckingham/Beckenham surname who came home. All members, potential members and their guests are welcome.
