Stephanie, Thanks for the reply. The story is not in "Lifting the Latch", which I have re-read recently. Likely because Alfred went to Australia over 20 years before Mont Abbott was born. I have not read "The Story of Enstone" by Graham Binns. I would think this book is a probable source of the story.
