I wonder if anyone out there knows which of the two parishes mentioned in the in the subject Records is the issuing parish? the records are in the form : Gadney, Robert Settlement certificate, 21st Nov 1728 St Michael, Oxford city Parish St. Ebbe, Oxford Reference PARSt Ebbe/c/11 My guess is that it is the St Ebbe Poor Law Overseer issued the certificate in order that Robert could move to St. Micheal. One further question, does anyone know whether the records themselves contain information beyond that in the catalogue entry?
Hi Robert, settlement certificatates were issued to people drawing poor law relief funds and had to prove they were entitled to what they were claming , many people died before there cases were heared on account they were not big earners for the magistrates the ones I have read for some of my wiltshire family are very un interesting. I n my view but do not cost much from the county archives so I would get them just to prove they bel;ong to your tree if indeed they do many thanks pete.
