Hello everyone, I am looking for any information on what I belive to be an early football club in the Oxford area, I have players medals or members medals ? for the name of C. K . Martin, from 1906. 1908/9. 1909/10. the shield on front of medal is of a bull, that I think may be an Oxford emblem. Information from Wendy Archer is that, CLAUDE KENNETH MARTIN, born in the June quarter of 1890 was living with his parents and siblings at Edith road Oxford, in the 1901 cencus. with thanks. Mr B.Lampard. Dymchurch. Kent.
He may not have been baptised. Baptism rates started dropping when civil registration started. On 13/04/2011 11:39, Jill Muir wrote: > Thank you so much Sylvie for your kind help. My ancestor Samuel Field died at Thame Oxfordshire in 1794. His grandson, also Samuel Field, died 27 August 1876. It was stated in 1904 that this grandson was buried at Thame in the Vault where his father and grandfather were buried. Was it standard procedure to engrave the Vault with the last person's information and or was the coffin inside identified as to whom it contained? I have the Wills for the above people and there is no mention of the Vault being passed on or would it be included as "Real and Personal Estate" and the like? The wife of the first mentioned Samuel died in 1832, some 38 years after her husband. Would it have been acceptable at that time for her to be buried in the Vault? Thanks in advance for any answers to these questions. Spencer Field Calgary Canada
Thank you so much Sylvie for your kind help. I have this family now, which completes our investigation into these soldiers from this one family. Yes thanks, I did have the Free BMD for Frederick but I simply cannot find his baptism.. Which is odd but maybe he was written on the back of the proverbial vicar's envelope or something, as the children either side of him are baptised. I think he may well have been baptised at Kingston Bagpuize, but we were only asked when we transcribed the PR to go to 1880 and so we stopped at that date. Frederick's parents were GEORGE WILLIAM WEBB who was born 1858 in Drayton, Abingdon, Berkshire | Free BMD Ab 2c 248. He married MARY JANE WALTERS in June Quarter 1878 Free BMD Faringdon 2c 503, daughter of WILLIAM WALTERS and JANE THATCHER. She was born Dec 1854 in Abingdon, Berkshire and the family were living near the WEBB family in Little London, which is actually Longworth but regarded as Southmoor for many years and is in fact becoming so officially shortly. Out of this family of seven children - four boys and three girls, four boys went abroad, but served this country. We know two boys fell in the 1st World War, and we cannot trace one, but we know he went 'abroad'. The other returned to Canada. Of the three girls, two died in infancy aged 1 year and 5 years and the other seemed to have survived childhood, but I cannot find anything else about her. Their parents lived on in the same cottage, until they died both aged 78 years in the 1930s - a really sad life which makes one realise how lucky we are today. I have found reference to James COURTEEN of Abingdon, vintner who married Sarah PLEYDELL probably around the late 1600s. However, I can find no trace of the marriage or of James's baptism in the Abingdon parish records. I wonder if anyone can help with this or with any other facts about the family. Several people offered help with my original query back in September 2010 and may be interested in the eventual outcome. It took a long time but documentary evidence has now been obtained which confirms the issue of a Silver War Badge to Private Carter in February 1919 and which therefore proved that he returned after being taken prisoner 1918. It was good to have our efforts vindicated; his name will not now be added erroneously to a monument to men who died in the Great War. Unfortunately we have still not traced where George came from or where he returned, with damaged health, after the war. William FRANKLIN was committed for one month's hard labour for neglecting to maintain his family. Jan. 2. - Before the Mayor; and E. PAYNE , Esq. Charles KING ,of the Coachmakers' Arms, was fined 10 shillings, including costs, for keeping open his house after eleven o'clock on Sunday night, the 24th of December. >From Jackson's Oxford Journal, Saturday, January 6, 1866; Issue 5880. ABINGDON. SUICIDE AT HARWELL. - On Tuesday the 26th ult. a man named James STRONG , aged about 65, was found dead in his bed-room, he having suspended himself by a cord from the bed-post. The evidence at an inquest held on the body before Dr. A. D. BARTLETT , Esq., Coroner, at the Crown, on the following day, went to show that the deceased had for some time previous to his death complained of severe pain in his head, which according to his own expression, made him " not know what he was about;" and the Jury gave a verdict that the deceased hung himself while in an unsound state of mind. AWFULLY SUDDEN DEATH. - On Friday the 29th ult. an inquest was held before A. D. BARTLETT , Esq., Coroner, on the body of Edmund HUMPHRIES , of Bartram's-row, Spring Road. It appeared from the evidence that the deceased, and his son and others, in the employ of Messrs. HARRIS and Son, bootmakers, of the Bath Street, had a Christmas supper at the house of their employers on the previous night, and left when the party broke up, at about half-past twelve o'clock. On reaching home HUMPHRIES' son left his father near the door for a minute, and on coming back found him on the ground. The poor man was raised but he was speechless, and on assistance arriving it was found that he was dead. The deceased had complained of a pain in the chest on the left side and a swelling often round the middle of the body. VERDICT, " Sudden death by the visitation of God."
>From Jackson's Oxford Journal, Saturday, January 6, 1866; Issue 5880. ABINGDON. Church Infant School. The new Church Infant School fot the town of Abingdon was opened on Thursday, Dec. 28, being the festival of the Holy Innocents. These schools owe their origin mainly to the exertions of Miss Charlotte GODFREY , who has for some time past maintained an Infant School in rooms wholly inadequate for the purpose. It was resolved about a year since to attempt to raise funds for erecting a room capable of holding 200 infants, with class rooms and suitable offices, and this good work was consummated on the 28th ult. The Privy Council, the National Society, and the Oxford Diocesan Board of Education have all contributed, and the remainder has been raised by voluntary contribution. The schools have been erected by Mr. THOMAS , of Abingdon, from designs furnished by Messrs. DOLBY and SPENCER , who most liberally placed their unpaid services at the disposal of the Committee. The entire cost of the building has been about 500 Pounds, and some further expense must be incurred before the rooms will be quite fit for use. The hour fixed for the opening was 12.30, and within a few minutes of that time the room was filled.

For those who live "out of county" or who are otherwise unable to attend, the usual detailed synopsis of the talk will be published in the "Oxfordshire Family Historian", the journal of the Oxfordshire Family History Society, which is issued to members of the society three times per year.
