Kim Yes, it's probably not practical to come to Cowley for a day from Cambridge. The coach service X5 from Stagecoach takes three hours and fifteen minutes from Cambridge to Oxford, and by the time you've factored in getting out across Oxford and them a bus out to Cowley, you are effectively talking about four hours each way from Cambridge to the Oxfordshire History Centre. In a message dated 25/08/2011 10:32:42 GMT Daylight Time, erylbloxham12@btinternet.com writes: off subject a little but does anyone have any recommendations for accommodation near Cowley preferably self catering? Eryl Bloxham Dear Eryl There are two options on this that I can think of, but they might not be what you had in mind. Certainly, I don't know of any self-catering chalets, caravans or the like in the vicinity. The first option is the pub directly across the road from the Oxfordshire History Centre, which does bed and breakfast - word is that it is quite reasonable. It is :- "The Original Swan", Oxford Road, Cowley, Oxford OX4 2LF - 01865 778888 http://www.arkells.com/pubs_more2.php?id=636 Alternatively, about seven minutes walk from the Oxfordshire History Centre is a "Premier Inn". Here, you can book a room only, with all meals being chargeable extras in the adjacent restaurant. It is :- "Premier Inn Oxford", Oxford Business Park, Garsington Road, Cowley, Oxford OX4 2JT - 0871 527 8866 http://www.premierinn.com/en/hotel/OXFLON/oxford It's worth noting that "Premier Inn" tend to offer substantial discounts to folks who book more than twenty-eight days in advance of their stay. Both "The Original Swan" and "Premier Inn Oxford" have car parking, and are close to the buses for trips into the city centre etc. Please let me know if you need further help. Best wishes. 2. Kim If you e-mail me off-list with your 'phone number, I'll talk you through this in more detail at the weekend. But quickly..... > As a non-driver with some limitation of my mobility, I would appreciate some advice from regular users about things like proximity to a bus route (I shall be making my journey from Cambridge by bus) You''ll arrive from Cambridge on a Stagecoach X5 that terminates at Oxford's Gloucester Green bus station. The number 5 bus to Blackbird Leys stops immediately outside of the Oxfordshire History Centre - formerly the Oxfordshire Record Office. But you'll have a walk of five minutes or so to get from your coach stop to the bus stop. > where I can get a reasonable coffee/lunch and/or pint nearby. "The Original Swan" immediately opposite the History Centre is fine - and there's a Wetherspoon pub about five minutes walk away. There's also a decent Wetherspoons between the coach station and the bus stop in town. > Is there a "better" days to go, in terms of likely busyness or longer opening hours? All days are 9am to 5pm. The quiet day is Saturday. > I can't find my CARN ticket - and it may have expired anyway - do I need one and if so, do they issue them on site? Yes and yes - bring a (or is it two?) passport sized photies with you ! As you know, the Centre's website will answer lots of your questions ! Best wishes. It is in capital preservation, and was struck A.D. 1700. The fact of its having formerly belonged to the Octogenarian is attested by a paper in which it was wrapped up, with its history described, written by his executor, in whose family it has remained until a very recent period.

    1. [OXF] Wm. COOMBES / GOODFELLOW and Catherine Rhoda STEED ( 1880 )
    2. >From Jackson's Oxford Journal, Saturday, December 11, 1880; Issue 6665. A BRIEF HONEYMOON. - William COOMBES , coach painter, 36, Albert-street, St. Ebbe's, pleaded guilty to assualting his wife, Catherine Rhoda, on the 28th of Nov. The prosecutrix said she had been married to the prisoner a month, and this was the third time he had assaulted and beaten her; he did so first about ten days after their marriage. He was not sober on either occasion that he had beaten her; he gave no reason for it, and she had given him no provocation. She did not wish to press the charge against him. - The Bench were unanimously of opinion that he had been guilty of a brutal assault, and they sentenced him to a month's hard labour. N.B. This is NOT connected to our research, but, on checking for the marriage of this couple, to find Catherine's name before marriage, we discovered that she was Catherine Rhoda STEED when marrying in Dec. Qtr 1880 in Oxford Reg. Dist. 3a 1104 , AND that William married under the name of William Coombe ( or Coombs ) GOODFELLOW. They are NOT at 36, Albert Street, St. Ebbe's on the 1881 census, nor have we traced them by name searching, although we HAVEN'T spent a lot of time checking the censuses. Good Luck to anyone researching this couple.

    1. [OXF] A surprise visitor!
    2. Wendy Archer
    3. A few days ago I had an early morning phone call, and the caller turned out to be long-time OXF lister, and OFHS member, Bev McCombs. Some OFHS members may recall, either by having attended it, or by reading in the Oxfordshire Family Historian, that 9 years ago Bev spoke to OFHS on the "Ascott Martyrs" (in costume)! Within half an hour, Bev & her husband were drinking cups of tea with us. A very big surprise, because Bev lives in New Zealand! Bev has written & published a book on the descendants of those who left the Ascott area in ~1873 for New Zealand, entitled "Pratley Families - descendants from Oxfordshire" and very kindly gave me a copy which she signed for me. A couple of photos of Bev, with the book, are on the Oxfordshire FHS facebook page at www.facebook.com/oxfordshirefhs . If you belong to Facebook, and "like" the page, you'll see on your newsfeed any other Oxfordshire FHS posts. You don't have to belong to the Society. Wendy

    3. Hi Listers, I have had an absolute brickwall breakthrough this morning on the Apprenticeship Records. Found the Occupation of the man we believed was my Great (x 4) Grandfather in Bishops Itchington, Warwickshire and he was a Butcher employing an Apprentice in 1759. (Jonathon Bustin) Richard Horn and Elizabeth (Waste) of Bishops Itchington, had a son Richard baptised 24 June 1760 at Bishops Itchington who married Sarah Newton on the 6 October 1780 at Noke, Oxfordshire and was the Butcher. Richard and Sarah's son Ephraim married Charlotte Horn of Bishops Itchington (believed his first cousin) and Ephraim was a Butcher, as was his brother John, the subject of an article in the April Oxfordshire Family Historian Magazine. Another son of Richard and Sarah, Swithin Horne (my G G Grandfather) was a Master Butcher in the Regents Park area of London. Was so excited, I just had to let everyone know of my breakthrough and hope all listers will use this absolutely wonderful resource. Anne
