Member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps. Coached Little League baseball and served as President of the St. Francis Little League in Burbank. Devoted ARCO Public Relations employee for 34 years. Instrumental in the ARCO Jesse Owens Game encouraging sportsmanship and competition for the young people of Los Angeles County and across the country. Gene worked for many years to beautify the parks and landscapes of Los Angeles County and across the U.S. with his "Growing Concern" project. Also involved with the 1984 Olympics, the United Way, Santa Barbara Beautiful, Save the Books for the Los Angeles Library, the Homeless Village, ARCO's first Van Pool program, Rose Parade functions, groundbreaking for the Ronald Reagan Library, dedication of ARCO's Junior Achievement building in Glenda! le. Gene also designed and managed information exhibits and programs on a wide range of energy topics, including fuel efficient techniques, cleaner burning fuel, and ecologically sound refining. Honored by Los Angeles County in 1994 for his contributions. Survived by his wife, Doris, daughters: Callah Owings of Oak Park, and Carlah (Tim) Schneider of Thousand Oaks, and son, Patrick (Natalie) Owings of Nashville, Tennessee. Also survived by grandchildren, Emily and Allison Cohen, Jennifur and Karl Schneider, and Michael and Alex Owings; his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Harold Owings of Burbank.
