Also some indication he was born in London as late as 1680. He immigrated before 1684/85 to Anne Arundel County, MD. A Passenger Record for Richard Owings and Rachel Roberts as his wife. He served in the military between October 18, 1697 and May 16, 1701 in Baltimore County, MD. He served as Captain of the Rangers on the Potomac River until the Rangers were disbanded. The duties of the Rangers were to protect the inhabitants of the area from attacks of "unfriendly Indians". For the remainder of his life Richard Owings was referred to as Captain Richard Owings. He died on November 14, 1716 in Baltimore, Baltimore County, MD. He is listed on Addison Owings' Book, Page # 1. He was also known as Richard ap Owen. The earliest record which we have of OWINGS in the American Colonies is of Richard OWINGS who was in Anne Arundel County Maryland by 1684/5. He may have been the Richard Owin, son of Richard Owin and Ann Phillis baptized 7 March 1659 at St. Botolph, London, England (from the International Genealogical Index, pp.93,244). A David OWING was born in St. Crux, York, Yorkshire, England ca. 1617 and married 16 Jan. 1642 at St. Crux, Ellen Hay (born ca. 1621) (Yorks Y 21 St. Crux, p.127). Another theory is that Richard father was Richard, born in England in 1625, emigrated to America, where he married Ann Randall, with my Richard being born in Maryland. We have found no passenger list of any ship on which he might have come to Maryland, but the fact that he was a debtor to the estate of Christopher Randall, 20 March 1684/5 (Original Inventories, Anne Arundel County, Maryland, Box 5, folder 31) proves that he was there. He brought with him his. wife Rachel and infant daughter Rachel. My feeling is that there were several Richard Owings/Owens in Maryland at the time and their lines are forever muddled. Whether or not he descended from Wales nobility is of great debate amongst the descendants and of no importance to me. I am an American and take great pride in being able to tie my blood to an early settler. He may have been of the ancient and noble house of OWAINS GLENDOWER, a decendant of the last ruling house of Llwewllyn in Wales before its final annexation to England. As for his surname, I have seen OWAINS, OWINGS, and OWENS. Take your choice. He was married to Rachell Ap ROBERT about 1680. 33. Rachell Ap ROBERT was born about 1660 in Llwyn, Dedinydd, Wales. She died on May 27, 1729 in Baltimore, Baltimore County, MD. She is listed on Addison Owings' Book, Page # 2. 34. Captain Nathaniel STINCHCOMB was born in Maryland. He is listed on Addison Owings' Book, Page # 198, 346. He was married to Hannah RANDALL. 35. Hannah RANDALL was born about 1684 in Maryland. She is listed on Addison Owings' Book, Page # 198, 346.
