My grandmother was an Owings (Nellie May Owings). The Archibald Young Owings you are referencing would have been her uncle....her father's brother. Her father was John Richard Owings. I am close to a couple of libraries that have both the Atlanta Journal and the Atlanta Constitution archives. I will be happy to research this. I had read the history by Laura Fagan Loftis but didn't realize that he was a police officer and just had not pursued how/why he died. But I will! Give me a week or two and I will check this out.
