Richard Owen experimented with seven spelling variations of Owen - lastly Owings - he never used any spelling consistently but his children picked up the spelling. There is no Rachel Beal tied to our Richard. The confusion comes from Richard's commanding officer and good friend Col. Ninian Beal - a Scot. None of Ninian's children were named Rachel.
