He had always told his childern that he was an orphan and that his parents died in a car crash. We dont know if this is true though. In the 1880. James Dew (age 3) was living in Baltimore, MD with Jacob Brenneman Owings (age 69), wife Bethiah Harriet (Spry) Owings (age 57), and daughter Ida H. Owings (age 22). He was listed as the grandson of Jacob Owings. This would put him born in 1877. (Its known through family information that James Dew was an orphan and the father's name was Dew). Jacob Owings was born in Maryland, as was his mother, however his father was born in Pennsylvania. Bethiah (Spry) Owings was born in England, as was both her mother and father. Ida Owings was born in Maryland. James Dew listed both his mother and father as being born in Maryland. This census was taken on June 2, 1880 in the 2nd Precinct in Baltimore, MD.
