Many Owings reverted to the simpler form of Owen/s and very few records exist of them. If you can find the "Owings & Allied Families" 1st edition - it did contain the variations. If he is an Owings and Richard was a very common name in the family - we can narrow down the Owings lines that lived in Alabama and the deep south. My own line are in Warren and Simpson County, Kentucky in the 1818 timeframe. Y DNA would tell you if he is an Owings for sure.
