By now, I expect you will have discovered your grandmother was Catherine Shillcock. Her sister, Jessica, was my maternal grandmother. I never knew her as she died when my mother was 4, but I am just beginning a quest to see if I can find a photograph of her. Have you found that the variety of spellings of this surname make census research difficult?! I do hope that we will be able to put our heads together to get a fuller picture of their history. Sadly, Mum (born Joan Tyrer in 1925, Married to Denys Lyon in 1947) died 2 years ago ~ she would have been so excited to know of you! The following was written by Tim Sullivan, CEO of The Generations Network, Inc. and is posted here at the RootsWeb blog: http://bigfile.rootsweb.com/newsroom/?p=111 As you know, The Generations Network has hosted and funded the RootsWeb online community since June 2000, thereby maintaining RootsWeb as the world's oldest and largest free genealogy website. TGN remains committed to this mission and believes that RootsWeb is an absolutely invaluable and complementary resource to Ancestry.com, our flagship commercial family history site. We believe in both services and want to see both communities prosper and grow. As part of this goal, we have decided to "transplant" RootsWeb onto the Ancestry.com domain beginning next week. This move will not change the RootsWeb experience or alter the ease of navigation to or within RootsWeb. RootsWeb will remain a free online experience. What will be different is that the Web address for all RootsWeb pages will change from www. rootsweb.com to www. rootsweb.ancestry.com. Again, the RootsWeb experience is not changing. The decision to host RootsWeb on Ancestry.com is being made for one primary reason: we believe that the users of each of our two main websites can be better served if they have access to the best services available on both. Simply stated, we want to introduce more Ancestry.com users to RootsWeb and vice versa. Today, despite the fact that Ancestry.com and RootsWeb.com are the two most frequently visited family history sites on the Web, only 25 percent of visitors to Ancestry.com visited RootsWeb in January 2008, while only 20 percent of visitors to RootsWeb visited Ancestry.com (according to Comscore Media Metrix). We think we will serve our users best by doing a better job of letting them know what is available on both Ancestry.com and RootsWeb. Hosting RootsWeb on Ancestry.com is the first step towards making this happen, but we will absolutely look for more and better ways down the road to advance this goal. Hosting RootsWeb on Ancestry.com will also make it easier for us to make changes and improvements to the RootsWeb experience in the future. All old RootsWeb URLs will continue to work, whether they are bookmarks or favorites, links to or from a hosted page or URLs manually typed in your Internet browser. We will have a redirect in place so that all old URLs will automatically end up on the appropriate new RootsWeb URL. You will never need to update your old favorites or links unless you want to. We have worked to make the transition as seamless as possible for our users, and this change should have a minimal impact on your experience with the site. RootsWeb will remain a free online experience dedicated to providing you with a place where our community can find their roots together. If you have questions regarding this change please email them to [email protected] Thanks, Tim Sullivan CEO The Generations Network, Inc. ========================================================================= The above was copied here for subscribers' information. **************It's Tax Time! However, my research seems to indicate that John K. and Jonathan Kellett were not the same individuals. I am looking for information that will document John K's relationship to Archibald Owings and his wife (Archibald's) Jane Burns. I believe John K. is the son of Archibald and Jane. I do have the second edition of the "Owings and Allied Families" which is where I was able to find John K. He moved his family to Hendersonville, NC sometime before 1860 (he appears on 1860 census there) where he enlisted in the Confederate army. He was captured twice, paroled once, then sent to Camp Douglas, IL where along with his son he died. I am looking for additional information and documentation on Archibald and John K. Some of the bad information can be sourced to author F.B. Focke and "The Garrison Church History" (St. Thomas Episcopal, Garrison Forest, Baltimore Co.) specifically. There is nothing to support Rachel Beall as a first wife - Rachel Robert outlived Capt. Richard Owings. Capt. Richard Owings commanding officer in the Potomac Rangers was Col. Ninian Beall, a close friend and I think the introduction of the name into the family. I am a bit rusty on Asenath - looking around it looks like people think she's John Owings (son of Richard & Rachel) second wife but I don't see a last name for her. The old story of the family feud and the beggings of the "Owings" spelling can be sourced to Focke or the Garrison Church book. I think lore tends to be true but don't think it's the reason for the spelling. I can find the "Owings" spelling in English records in the beggining of ! the 17th century. We really don't know if Capt. Richard and Rachel Robert are Welsh but there are cogent reasons to think so - they are very much a mystery and a "brick wall". Scotland - maybe. Y DNA matches for me all point to Scotland but that's inconclusive at this point and at what point in time? I would love to see whatever family history you have. I will go there someday for sure! The history of the Owings/Owens family is very interesting. I've stayed up all night at least twice this past week reading alot of it. Yes, Ive read Thomas Deye Owings biography. Just found the other you mentioned a few hours ago and plan to read in a few minutes. I have a few fun questions for you. lol I've read people being confused about Richards wifes name. I've read a Rachel Robert. I've heard mentioned a Beall wife as well. (Only from other comments on here) Was he widowed or was Rachel the only? There also seems to be a mystery about Asenath. I'm still trying to figure out the lines down. I get Richards side fair enough but I need to study up on mine going back further. Do you agree family was from Wales and before then Scotland? Years ago one of my uncles showed me the Owens side going back a very long time. I have copies but at my mother! s. So in just using memory I remembered being told about Owings Mills and family there. I recalled Owings of my direct line being in Bath Co. Ky. One having been in the war of 1812 and many etcs! I was also told there was a falling out of sorts concerning a will. Which I found this morning when skimming over the other bio. that I have yet to finish. I'm addicted! Thanks for replying David. ~Laurel Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
