Author: Ruthiedke Surnames: Owings, McAlpin Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.owings/412.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi, you might want to contact me. I've been looking for a Richard M. Owings, born 1825, died in the Civil War in 1864. In the process, however, I've started wondering if he was married to a wife in Hamburg, Edgefield County, SC and had a son there - Richard, born 1862, but also had the Richard born in Charleston in 1860, with Sophia McAlpin. I'd found the Charleston Richard a while back, but just noticed last night that his father was dead in 1870. Might be totally wrong, but I thought I'd check to compare notes. Author: perryvanwye Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.owings/420.2.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Can you please send me your records? And yes, this tree hs not been fleshed out in the book. We are both researching the same tree Richard & Sarah Hellams, Richard & Nancy Campbell Owings, William & Mary Robertson Owings. Yes, either Mancil or Manoah is a good guess for the middle initial. Of the the last couple - three carried the Manoah middle name - namesake of Manoah Robertson (sometimes spelled Robersone). A R.M. Owings is listed on the 1860 Slave Schedule - Richard Mancil Owings would have been about 70 in 1860. Could be Robertson Manoah Owings - he would be about 45, Could be Richard Manoah Owings - he would be about 29. By 1884, a Richard M. Owings is in Liverpool and marries Elizabeth Kevitt 1/1/1885. Author: Ruthiedke Surnames: Owings Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.owings/420.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: No, I don't. I have a friend tied into the SC Owings family and I'm assuming he is related to them, but doesn't show up in that family tree. My guess is that he got left out. If that's the case, then he would be Richard Mancil Owings. But I have absolutely no clear idea what it stands for. I've got his marriage record (RM Owings), his enlistment records (RM), census (RM or Richard M). Any thoughts on where else I can go? Your question has made me think, though. His son had the same name and middle initial, so if I can track down anything definite on his middle name, it might give an idea. Katie Owings Zimmerman (1887-1944) was daughter of Richard M. Owings (b. 1862- d. not sure, after 1905). Richard's father was also named Richard M Owings (b. abt 1825, d. 1864 in Civil War); mother was Mary Elizabeth Spires Hunter Owings. Father Richard appears in census for Hamburg, Edgefield, SC in both 1850 and 1860. I have read the Owings book (1st ed.) cover to cover and cannot find him, although I've spotted a few places he might fit in. Does anyone have any information? William was born in Laurens Co., SC and died in Greenwood, SC. I have been unable to find any additional information back beyond William, including his siblings, although the 1880 census of Youngs, Laurens Co. does list a 7 yr old William having parents "John" and "Jane." Any assistance is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
