    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: perryvanwye Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.owings/444.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Throughout the South nearly all Owings spell it Owings but say "Owons" or "Owens". Many did revert to the simpler spelling. No one really knows how the spelling came about but they can be found in the English census and baptisms back to 1600 and earlier. Capt. Richard Owen/Owings experimented with seven spellings and never really settled on any - its his children that began to spell the name consistently. Mostly, people and historians simply ingnore the Owings spelling. The Valley of Owen in California is a good example and Owens-Corning another. Author: canyonwren_1 Surnames: OWINGS, OWENS, DORROH, GRIFFITH Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.owings/444/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi. I am researching the Sarah Owens/Owings family. she was born in 1827 Laurens Co SC, and married Leonard L Griffith. Her father was John Owings (1783 Laurens Co SC - 1872 SC) who married Nancy Dorroh. Sarah Owens Griffith died in 1914 in Texas. Her tombstone reads Owens, not Owings. Just a case of spelling it like it sounds? Or was Owens easier to spell for most people? Anybody have any ideas or information? Thanks for any respone! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My 3rd great granfather was William Owens/Owings B:1809 KY D: 1903 IN. His death certificate states his father was Henry Owings but, I am looking for other supporting information. I have the "Owings and Allied Families" book download, but, it doesn't offer any support that William Owings was actually Henry Owings'son. It just references another book "The History of the Owing Family", I haven't been able to locate that book. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
