Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/CV4.2ACEB/280 Message Board Post: I recently got my "Y" (male) DNA test results back, to the best of our knowledge, I am the first Owings to do so with Family Tree. We would like to see at least a couple more particpants from male Owings to compare results with. We have had some very interesting findings, the conventional wisdom is that all Owings descend from Capt. Richard Owen/Owings (1662-1716) and that he came from Merioneth, Wales. Beyond this period, my DNA shows that I am a member of the Beatty family of Dumfriesshire County, Scotland (Lowland Scotland) - in particular a profile man named "Adam".

    2. Bil Brasington
    3. I have been asked by a number of people if I would conside heading another Reprint the Addiosn Family Book. It was so difficulrt 3 1/2 years ago, I have pit it off. Howeber, if there is enough interest, I will. Plan would be to reprint Edition 3, adding the data dropped from Edition 2 as an appendix (like my branch). Not a redo just an reprint. I am checking with publisher on the possibility and costs. I am assuming the cost will be more than last time, which was around $75/copy. If toy would be interested, drop me a line. Edward was murdered by four slaves and thrown to the bottom of a well in Fountain Rock, Frederick County, Maryland in 1816 - they were promply hanged. Nimrod was a private in the U.S. Army in 1809. At a dinner feast for Lafayette in Frederick County on December 39th, 1824, Nimrod "furnished a lot of coons, turkey's, possums, and geese". I don't have anything of your Barnhart's but it could be they were just friends or one of the children married.

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Owings Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/CV4.2ACEB/263.1 Message Board Post: Hopefully this will help you. I've spent the last few years researching Karnes County history and this is what I've managed to find about Dr. Owings. Lewis S. Owings was born on September 6, 1820 in Rowan County, North Carolina to John and Sarah (Russell) Owings. Some records show him to be a native of Tennessee. Records show Owings being married to an Elizabeth Haney, but on January 5, 1852 he married Helen Marr Swisher in Ellis, Texas. Owings was said to have fought in the Texas Revolution, however there is no sold evidence to back this up. It is known, however, that Dr. Owings had come to Texas by 1850. This is where he entered into a business partnership with Thomas Ruckman. He co-founded the town of Helena and named it after his wife Helen. While in Helena, Owings operated a stage-line, started in 1854, from San Antonio to Victoria. Owings was considered a doctor, although he did not practice. Owings was also supposed to have served in the Texas State Legislature. In 1857 or 1859 Owings left Texas. He resided in Mesilla near present-day Las Cruces, New Mexico. Here he made a fortune of seventy thousand dollars in land and mining ventures. In April 1860 Owings was selected to be the first Provisional Governor of Arizona. He advocated separate territorial status for Arizona. He was also concerned with the threat of Apache attacks and called for war against them. Also in 1860 Owings, along with James Henry Tavis, formed the first company of Arizona Territorial Rangers. When the Civil War began in 1861 the men of the Arizona Rangers joined the Confederate Army thereby disbanding the Rangers. Owings never actually became head of the proposed Arizona Territory. Arizona applied for Territorial status but was turned down until 1863. In 1862, as many Confederate supporters were heading back to Texas, he left as well. In November 1864, Captain James Henry Tavis wrote to Owings from battle explaining his desire to be elsewhere. Records show Owings being referred to at this time as “Confederate Arizona’s unofficial ‘Governor-in-exile’ in San Antonio.” In 1865 Owings was reported to have lost most of his property and was living on a farm near San Antonio. About 1871 Owings became a railroad agent and settled in Denison, Texas. Here he operated a livery stable and acted as a dealer in cotton, wool, and hides. On March 1, 1873 he became Denison’s first mayor. He only held the position for two months. At this time he was forced to resign as a result of failing health. Owings died on August 22, 1875 and was buried in Denison.

    1. Free database search this week at www.NewEnglandAncestors.org.
    2. This came from a list that I am on.... Hope it helps someone.... For members with New England ancestors, here is an opportunity to search the 1847 - 1994 issues of the New England Historical and Genealogical Register for the holiday weekend, Thursday through Sunday, without charge. This is one of the many databases that can be accessed by members but for this limited time, it can be searched by anyone. Here is part of the announcement from NEHGS. NEHGS is pleased to offer free access to its New England Historical and Genealogical Register database on NewEnglandAncestors.org over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend! Normally only available to NEHGS members, the Register database will be accessible to everyone from Thursday, November 25 through Sunday, November 28, 2004. We encourage all NEHGS members to spread the word about this offering, and we hope that those of you who are not members find a veritable feast of ancestors in the Register database! Published quarterly since 1847, The New England Historical and Genealogical Register is the flagship journal of American genealogy and the oldest journal in the field. The online database includes issues from 1847 to 1994. Starting Wednesday, there will be link on the www.NewEnglandAncestors.org home page that will take you directly to the NEHGR database and starting Thursday, the database will be 'open'. The search function for the Register is based on names. You can enter First Name and Last Name and can also use Advanced Search features that include 'begins with" and wildcards and proximity searches. There is no provision for searching on places or localities. "Search Tips" gives good examples of what the returns might be for various search words so it would be good to view these. Since the database pages are scanned images of the individual pages of the Record, your browser's 'find on page' feature cannot be used so you will have to scroll the page to find your search words.
