>..so how did I get it?? < There are several virus' that enter your computer by way of an HTML format e-mail, when you click on the e-mail to read it, you are infected. This kind of virus is NOT contained in an attachment. For the time being at least, standard virus scanners do not scan the body of an e-mail, only the attachments. It is a little inconvenient, but you can protect yourself from these kind of virus' by changing your security settings in IE from Medium to High BEFORE reading your e-mail (this will disable Java & VBS script from executing). There is also a free program to stop script virus' from Easy Desk Software, I am currently testing it. It is designed to work with your e-mail only.(MS products only). http://www.easydesksoftware.com/down.htm Look down the page for DOWNLOAD VIRUS REPELLENT . Click on "more information" to read all about it. *********** Go here to find out all about the KAK worm and how to remove it. ,,, Be sure and click on "Technical details" bottom left of the page. http://www.trend.com/vinfo/virusencyclo/default5.asp?VName=VBS_KAKWORM.A Bob Hays ----- Original Message ----- From: "KHarrison" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, June 21, 2000 7:27 AM Subject: [OE] kak virus ...the aftermath > I need help again : ) > > I must have contacted the kak virus. Very good Ed ,,,,, was it in an HTML message or contained in an attachment ,,,,,,, if in the message body , looks like I stand corrected ,,,, well done Bob ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ed Heral" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, June 21, 2000 11:04 PM Subject: Re: [OE] kak virus ...the aftermath > I have Norton 2000 and it caught and quarantined the Kak worm. > Ed
I did not look to see. <G> My understanding from the Symantec site is that this worm comes in the message as a signature file or whatever and opening the message activates the worm. Here is what Symantec says about the Kak worm VBS.KakWorm spreads using Microsoft Outlook Express. It attaches itself to all outgoing messages via the Signature feature of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer newsgroup reader. The worm utilizes a known Microsoft Outlook Express security hole so that a viral file is created on the system without having to run any attachment. Simply reading the received email message will cause the virus to be placed on the system. So it isn't in the message as being part of the message, but as a signature type attachment it will be activated when the message is opened. Therefore I deleted it instead of seeing just how it came. It was a reply message from someone I had sent a message to. They found it and deleted it on their computer.
