    3. Hello to all, This may be a little off topic...but I was hoping that some of you that are so knowledgeable about OE would also know the answer to this. I have been told by two pretty computer savvy people that I should leave my computer on...always..never shut it off.....only turning off the monitor. Any thoughts on this???? Appreciate it! 3. Hi Kathy, I am not sure what the actual answer is to your question but I can tell you from experience that when I was working in customer support for a very large database manufacturer in Silcon Valley, CA we ALWAYS left our computers on. The computer operations folks said that it was better for the life of the computer to keep them turned on. We did not turn the monitor off -- but had the screen go black (or to sleep) every 10 minutes of non-use. My understanding back then was that the power supplies fail first and the techs felt the surge of power from powering on and off was the culprit. They also felt that the surge of power going to the peripherals was not good so we left our printers on too. Now I know that in the ensuing years (this was back in 1985-1991) equipment technology has changed and PCs are pretty cheap (you can get replacement parts for them very easily and at a good price). I turn my computer off every night - mainly this is because I have a LAN in my home and every evening we shut it down (computers, modems and routers). My DSL technicians recommended shutting down my entire system every night or atleast every couple of days because the modem and router will literally burn out from always being left on. It seems that the routers and modems (cable) made for home or small business use are not as hardy as those that are made for large business needs! Anyway, my recommendation is to power off every evening :o) I have been doing this for many years without any problems to my systems (we have two - an IMAC and an HP Pavilion). But should you choose to leave yours on - I am sure that is just fine too! 3. If you power off your monitor, your hard drive will go into power saver mode. Also it will prolong the life of the internal switch.
