    3. I didn't know the deleted items did not delete from the hard drive - how do you get it off the hard drive? Alice Corbett ----- Original Message ----- From: "ETM" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, June 25, 2001 1:14 PM Subject: Re: [OE] folders disappeared Space conservation. What you delete from the mail program's deleted items folder does *not* really disappear and is creating bloat on the computer. 3. Alice ,,, ETM is correct in that the deleted item is not removed from your HD, but the space it occupies on your HD is made available for reuse. Every thing stored on your HD is stored under a file name and that file name and its' location on the HD is stored in the HD's master file structure (FAT) (File Allocation Table), when a file or folder is deleted, all that happens is the first character of the file/folder name is removed, when this happens, the computer can no longer fined the file/folder and thinks it no longer exists (or never existed) and the space used by that file/folder is again available to be reused. Unless you have super secrets to hide, there is no need to try and remove it, when something else reuses that space the old data will be written over and gone forever. A lot of deleting is one cause of fragmenting (leaves holes on HD), so defragment often, this will "cover up" most old deleted data and give you a faster operating machine. 3. By compacting. I believe some old-time computer users may use DOS to do it, but Outlook Express permits it by deleting all items in the deleted items folder, then going to the monitor icon above the bottom right system tray and clicking on it so that it turns to "off line" mode. Then go to file/folder/compact all folders in the top menu of the Outlook Express mail program and do it. The program will compact all folders and will rid the program of all messages previously deleted. The compacting will run its own course and stop when finished. Let it perform on its own without attempting to do anything else on the computer. It will go faster that way. If you haven't done it previously it might fail finishing its job and need to be restarted. Once done it should be easier to do on a regular basis. I do it every evening as a matter of normal maintenance before shutting down the computer.
