    3. 1. In IE click on Help / About ,,,, If you do not have 128 bit cipher strength, it will need to be installed ,,, you cannot access secured web sites without it.,,,,, http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q261/3/28.ASP 2. Click on Start / Find / Files or Folders ,,, search your C drive for Hosts (no extension & not Hosts.sam, which is a sample file) ,,, If you find one, Rename it, reboot and try again. ,,,, http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q219/8/43.ASP 3. Check the Winsock.dll, Wsock32.dll, and Wsock.vxd Files Check for multiple instances of the Wsock32.dll, Winsock.dll, and Wsock.vxd files. Also check the dates and versions of these files. Rename any file that is not in the appropriate folder (Wsock32.dll and Wsock.vxd should be in the Windows\System folder, and Winsock.dll should be in the Windows folder). To check for multiple files, use the following steps: Click Start point to Find, and then click Files or Folders. In the Named box, type the appropriate file name (for example, type "wsock32.dll" (without the quotes), "winsock.dll" (without the quotes), or "wsock.vxd" (without the quotes)), and then click Find Now. NOTE: Be sure to search in the drive where Windows is installed (usually drive C). To rename extra copies of the files that are not of Microsoft origin, right-click the file that was found, click Rename, and change the file extension to .old (for example, rename the Wsock32.dll file to Wsock32.old). NOTE: If you receive an error message that a file by that name already exists, choose another file extension (for example, .zzz). If none of the three checks above improves the problem, we need to know exactly what does happen when an attempt is made to access a web site: Do you get any of the error msg.'s below: 1. Internet Explorer cannot open the Internet site Web address. A connection with the server could not be established. 2. Internet Explorer cannot open the internet site URL: Web site the connection to the server was reset. ************ http://support.microsoft.com/support/ie/ie5/topics/browse/iebrowseemts.asp#iewsock 3. The Page Cannot Be Displayed. 4. The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings. 5. Cannot find server or DNS Error. 6. An internal error occurred in Windows Internet extensions. We need exact details on what actually happens. 3. Bob I appreciate your help on this one. 1. Yes it does have 128 bit cipher strength 2. It had a file called hosts, we renamed it and rebooted but to no avail. 3. There was not any wsock32.dll or winsock32.dll on his machine at all but there was a wsock.vxd in his windows\system directory. modified - 23.4.99, created - 22.3.2001 version 4.10.98 windows socket driver I presume the best thing to do is send him a copy of my wsock32.dll assuming it is the same version. How will I know if it is going to be the right version if he doesn't have a copy himself. Am I right in thinking he will need to have regsvr32.exe to open it with to enable him register it first. Do you think this is the root of the problem. Comments appreciated Best Regards John Stevens MAM Software Ltd ----- Original Message ----- From: "Robert Hays" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, June 21, 2001 6:38 AM Subject: Re: [OE] Cannot browse any pages > 1. 3. Sending him your copy of wsock32.dll would be the simplest thing to do ,,, it is also small enough to put on a floppy (40kb) and yes, it should be properly registered ,,,,,,,, this file is needed to properly resolve DNS address'. Do not worry about winsock32.dll, it apparently is not needed ,,,,, I don't have one either <g> BTW: wsock32.dll is the file replaced by the W32/[email protected] virus (among other virus') Lets see what happens when this file is replaced and registered.. Fingers crossed.
