Well Dick ,,, looks like you have yourself a real problem and I'm afraid that the solution could get too complicated for e-mail. The fact that you get an error message tends to say that you have a bad (corrupt and/or contaminated) file. The easiest possible cure would be to simply reinstall OE back over the top of itself. Other than that, you could run SFC (System File Checker) and make sure its' options are set to report bad files, however, if you have not made it a regular chore to keep it cleaned out, it will be packed full of chores that should be taken care of. For now, just Ignore everything except corrupt files, if any are found, SFC will give you an opportunity to restore them. Take a crack at it, might as well start learning to do it. Good luck, you will need it Bob Hays ----- Original Message ----- From: "H.J. Hi, all.......wonder if anybody has answer to this mystery on my OE. Am using WIN 98 on my Gateway PC, Pent.2 plenty spare memory etc., etc. Everything was fine until suddenly I couldn't send any e-mail longer than about 8K whether as text, attachment, or whatever. Up comes "This pgm has done an illegal op.............etc., etc. Can handle any length msg incoming no problem but nothing over about 8K o/g. Have checked and cancelled the "break up sent msgs" but no effect. Appreciate suggestions. Dick.
Carol said: > I do not know of a way to scan the incoming message for text in the message > box. Am I wrong in thinking that the third rule option in the "Select the conditions for your rule" that says "Where the message body contains specific words" , you enter as many XXX words as you like using " or " between them, would do the job ??? George, You can setup mail filters to sort your messages in a myriad of ways. I sort all my mail by subject line and for offensive emails - I set the filter to delete it off the server (that way I don't even have to look at it). If you wanted to remove XXX sites -- you can create a filter based on either a particular email address (most are fake anyway - but you can stop them from coming to your mail box) or on subject matter. The key is to get a couple and see what types of words are used in the subject line. I do not know of a way to scan the incoming message for text in the message box. If you need assistance with mail filters, you can email me and I will walk you through setting one up - though they are very easy to do. Carol [email protected]
Is there a feature in Outlook that will search the body of messages to look for words that you don't want, and divert the message to junk or adult folders? Such as "XXX" and worse?
Hi everyone, Is there a way that I can send pretty scrolling stationery and music to my AOL friends?
Hi Folks, My name is Carol Hepburn and I am the new list admin for this mail list. I have not been a subscriber so I am new to whatever discussion has taken place. If you need assistance, please feel free to email me directly. I have been using Outlook Express for 4 years now - and am pretty knowledgeable with it on both WIN 95/98 and on MAC OS 8.6 Best wishes, Carol Hepburn [email protected] Phoenix, AZ USA
I am using the Tasks and Calendar which come up when you open the Outlook 98 program. I have inadvertently changed a setting which has made my calendar dates dark black instead of the normal lighter color. (Dark black indicates that you have something on your calendar for that day.) Now all of my future dates are dark. And I can't get them to go back to light. It isn't hurting anything, but it looks like I have calendared something for everyday of the year and doesn't alert me now to any appointments, etc. Can anyone help? Dee Randall
The "Watch Conversation" feature is mostly for people who receive Tons of mail everyday and want a way to quickly find all messages that are replies to one particular message without having to read the subject lines for each and every message. You pick a message, then activate the feature, from that point on, all reply messages will have a pair of eye glasses in front of it. To turn it off, reread my previous post. Thanks Bob, I didn't know if I had some new kind of virus of if Big Brother was after me or what. Just what is the purpose of this feature anyway? Thanks, Sonja
Well Sonja ,,, it could be that there is a spaceship sitting out there in space watching every move you make, But more than likely you have turned on OE's "Watch Conversation" feature. On your top tool bar, click on "Message", near the bottom is the "Watch Conversation" option, if it has a check in front of it, it is turned on. Click on it to turn it off (remove the check mark). Then click on Tools/Options/Read Tab, about the middle of the page, you will find the color that has been selected for "Watched messages" . This option is used to "follow" a conversation by placing a pair of eye glasses in front of all replies to an original message that you are especially interested in. Just makes it easier to find and read certain messages amongst many. If that is not it, then be sure and pull down your window shades. You are more than welcome. Please drop the " e " from my name, us Hays' & Hayes' are at war on how to spell it. <G> ,,, just kidding. If I can be of further assistance, holler. Wow, thanks!..I think I'll get a good nights sleep and tackle it in the morning <g>.. Thanks for taking the time to write out all the details..I appreciate it! Claudia
Claudia ,,,, if you are asking if you can set up more than one e-mail account in OE ,,, yes you can, as many as you like. You ask:: >Am I able to have a second email address through my server (GTE)< This you will have to find out from your server, most do. To do it, you will have to make the arrangements with your server and get an additional user name & password & e-mail address for the second mail box. If security and privacy is no problem, you will not need the User Name & Password, you can use the ones you already have, but you will need the additional e-mail address. ,,,,, when you have what you need from your ISP, its' a simple matter of adding it to your OE e-mail accounts. First you need some basic information about your ISP which you can acquire from your current account. ,,,, Tools/Accounts ,, select your current account and click on Properties, under the "Servers" Tab, record what is in the "Incoming Mail(POP3)" window and in the "Out going mail(SMTP)" window. You will need these for your new account. To set up your new account:: Tools/Accounts ,,, click on Add ,, an "Internet connection wizard" will open ,,, in the "Display Name" window, type in a name of your choose for the new account, it must be different from your current account, and can be anything. (AA)1. Next 2. Select "I already have an e-mail address that I'd like to use" E-Mail address: (enter your new address) 3. Next 4. My Incoming mail server is a : ( POP3 ) server Incoming mail: (enter name from current account) Outgoing mail: (enter name from current account) 5. Next 6. Account name: (enter your current/New User Name) Password: (enter your current/New password) Check "Remember password" 7. Next 8. Finish Your new account should now be set up and will be listed in your Accounts window (Tools/Accounts) Now that both accounts are set up, choose one as your "Default" and click on the "Default" button. (in the Tools/Accounts window) Now here is where it gets a little tricky, deciding how you want to check & download the mail from both accounts, both at the same time or one and not the other then the other at a later time. Under Tools/Accounts/Properties/General Tab ,,, at the bottom left of page is a small box labeled "Include this account when receiving mail or synchronizing" ,,, this box MUST be checked for OE to check for mail in this account. 1. If both accounts are checked, OE will download mail for both accounts at the same time. 2. To check one and not the other, clear the little box for the one not to check. ,,,, Tools/Accounts/Properties/General Tab ,,, clear box ,,, Apply ,, OK ,,,select account to check ,,, Close ,,,, Send/Recv 3. After #2, to check the other account:: >>>>> Tools/Accounts/ ,,, select Other account ,, Properties/General Tab ,, check box ,,, Apply ,,, OK ,,,, Close ,,, Send/Recv Above is one way to do it ,,,, Below is another, and probably the one you want, here you will set up an "Identity", this method allows the two accounts to be kept separate and individual. Go to File/Identities ,,, Manage Identities ,,, New ,,,fill out the form ,,, OK ----> you will be ask if you want to switch to your new identity now ,,, answer yes ,,, you will be presented with a whole new fresh unused OE page along with the same forms to fill out as in the 1st method above starting at (AA). Fill out the first page on your own, then start at (AA)1. Next ,,, complete the other forms (pages) the same as above in method #1. If all goes well, you now have two Identities, one for you and one for your spouse or kids. You can set yours up for you and they can set theirs up for them. To switch back and forth ,,,, File/ Switch Identity ... ,,,,, click on your Identity and there you are. Good grief ,,, if anybody understands all this ,,,, please explain it back to me <g> Good Luck Bob Hays ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, January 14, 2000 3:50 PM Subject: [OE] E-mail Addresses > I'm not sure if this is an OutLook Express or an ISP question..Am I able > to have a second email address through my server (GTE) which would come > into my OutLook Express?..I'm just not sure how to set it up..Thank you > for any advice.. > Claudia > > > ============================== > Free Web space. I'm not sure if this is an OutLook Express or an ISP question..Am I able to have a second email address through my server (GTE) which would come into my OutLook Express?..I'm just not sure how to set it up..Thank you for any advice.. Claudia
OE also has an Import and Export wizard :---> File/Import ,,,, follow your options. If one of these options will not do what you need, you just may be out of luck on this one. Is there a way to convert Filters created under Netscape Messenger4.61 or 4.7 for use in Outlook Express? I have more than 2000 filters to convert and am running on a 486DX2/133 machine. I have found that entering filters one-at-a time is very SLOW as I add more and more. Any help appreciated. Sincerely, Edward, Sr.
Betty ,,, Its' not that you are doing anything wrong. The size of the photo is determined by its' size in pixels when you attach it to your message. When the photo is opened, it is really opened in your browser (IE) and its' size can be determined by right clicking on the displayed photo and selecting Properties, look for its size in pixels. About the largest size that will print on the 8 1/2" width of paper (oriented for Portrait) is 700 pixels wide , (Exp. 700x400) ,,,,, and for the 11" length (Landscape) is 1000 pixels, (Exp. 1000x500). As you have no control over the size while in your browser, its' size will have to be adjusted by an external graphics editor before being attached to your mail message.
