    3. Dee ,,, the fastest and easiest way to manipulate the "Read" / "Unread" numbers is while in that folder, click on Edit / Select All (you must select 1 message before the "Select All" option will be available) ,,, then Edit / Mark As Read or Unread. All highlighted messages will be changed to "Read" or "Unread". Don't worry about selecting a message that is already the way you want it, wont hurt a thing. You can change the "Read" / "Unread" status back and forth to suit your needs. 1. [OE] Filing for Replies to Email
    2. Dee Randall
    3. Several weeks ago I was trying to find a way to eliminate a step in order to file my sent emails into the email file folders without retrieving them from the email sent file, and then filing them. In order to do this, the step was to "copy to file" before I sent it. Then I would not have to go to the sent file in order to file it. However, I have found a glitch to this that has caused me a lot of work. On the email files after the name, it will have listed numbers to show the amount of unopened emails in that particular email folder. In order to get these numbers off, one normally only has to go in and open the emails then the number will be reduced to zero. However, since using the "copy to file" method of sending the email to file, a number will show up that there is an email in that particular file that has not been opened. You will have to go into the file and open and shut every email in there. Even if a "1" email remains, then you will have to go in and open and shut ALL the emails AGAIN in order to get this number reduced to zero, because the little yellow email sign will not change when you open it and shut it. This became a nuisance to me when I decided to put a lot of my lists that I am receiving into the message rules filing system. I realized I was showing that there were messages in there showing unopened, even though they were only my "sent" emails. So if anyone has tried this method of filing their sent messages, beware that they will show up as "unopened messages" on the email folders list. I know there is one person that will understand this message and I hope not to thoroughly confuse others. Thank you so very much for your patience. Sincerely, Dee Randall

    3. Well Dee ,,,,, I am about 98% sure (that 2% is my back door), that there is no built in feature for what you want, however, the "Signature" feature can be used for that purpose, just set up the little quotes you like instead of your signature. These quotes can be inserted anywhere in your message you like and you can have as many as you like. Tools/Options/Signature Tab ,,,,, DO NOT select "Add signatures to all outgoing messages" ,,,,, in the "Signatures" window, click on NEW ,,,, in the "Edit signature" window select "Text" and enter your little Quote ,,,, go back to the first window and click "Rename" ,,, rename it with a memory jogger name. ,,,,,,,, now click on the "Advanced" button and put a check mark in the little box for your mail program. ,, click all "Applies" and get out of there. Repeat the NEW ---->> Rename process for each quote you want. To use them, in your new or reply to message, click on "Insert/Signature" and select the quote you want ,,, it will be inserted where your courser is positioned. Other than this, you will have to let your fingers do the walking. 3. I use Outlook Express, Internet Explorer 5. I notice that some reply headers that I get, I like very much. For instance 1) they will repeat that they got this message from me 2) or they are replying to my message of such-and-such a date. 3) or they will state that this reply is from their name or their name and email This is quite helpful when I receive emails and I would like to provide the same helpful information on my emails that I send. Are there any little additions that I can add to my email when I reply. I haven't seen any. Thanks, Dee.

    3. Hello everyone, I wonder if someone may be able to help me, please. I am running Win 95 and have recently upgraded to OE 5. I now have a problem that I didn't have previously. Whenever I am using OE, working offline, it keeps reverting back to working online every few minutes which is very annoying. When using OE previously, I used to select working offline and it would stay that way until I wanted to go online. I have checked properties to see if there are any instructions ticked to automatically go on line but cannot find anything. I feel silly asking this as I am sure that it is something simple. Thanks in advance for your help. Regards Jeanne Harvey

    1. [OE] Saving Sent Mail
    2. Robert Hays
    3. I am posting this answer to a question I received by private mail. The sender preferred not to post to the list; however there is information here that may help other folks . Even without the question, I think most of you will gain some usefulness from it. *************************************************** To understand why your reply is sometimes in the "Sent Items" folder and sometimes not, you have to know how your mail program works and the path your reply takes and why it takes that path when you click on "Send". So, lets follow a reply into cyber space ::: A message arrives in your mail box, you select it and click on "Reply" and enter your comments, then click on "Send ,,,,,,, >>> 1. If you have Tools/Options/Send Tab/Send Messages Immediately ,,, selected, the reply will be sent right then and there and will show up in your "Sent Items" folder immediately. (bypassing the "Outbox folder) 2. If you do not have the "Send messages Immediately" selected, then your message goes to your "Outbox", and there it will stay until the next time your "Send/Recv" is activated, it will then be "sent" and moved into the "Sent Items" box. A. If you have ,,, Tools/Options/General Tab/Check for new Messages Every XX Min.'s ,,, selected, then everytime this option times out, it will check for new mail AND send all mail stored in the "Outbox". ,,,,, This means that if you have this option set for 30 minutes and you click on "Send", 1 minute after New Mail is auto. checked for, your sent mail will sit in the Outbox for the next 29 minutes, on the other hand, if you click on "Send", 29 minutes after an auto. check, your sent mail will only stay in the Outbox for 1 minute. This would explain your statement ,,--------->>>and sometimes it is just not there in the sent items as the last item sent. If it is in the outbox, of course it is not in the sent items yet. <<<<<< ,,,,,,, the only way around this delayed sending is to activate the Send/Recv. button yourself. To answer your main question, there is NO one click "File this message in this or that special folder" button or option. You can forget that, the closest you can get to it takes 5 clicks + the opportunity to create a folder if need be. The absolute fastest and easiest way to do what you want, is when you have finished your comments in the reply, ,,,,, click on ,,, File/Copy To Folder ,,, you will be presented with a list of every folder you have created, click on the one you want to File (save) this message into, then click on OK. An exact copy of your reply will be Filed (saved) in that folder. ,,,,,, now you can Send it ,,,, it is already Filed (saved) in the folder of your choice, no tracking it down to move it. DO NOT use your Inbox, Outbox, Sent Items box, Deleted Items box or Drafts box to File (save) these messages in, create your own special purpose folders that fit the situation. ,,,,, there is NO better, easier or faster way to File & Send at (almost) the same time. You said ------>>> Just yesterday I was trying to send all of a > group of messages to a person (which I do on a normal basis) and I > have to go thru all my sent files again to gather them up. Wouldn't > it be nice if I could just get them in their appropriate files at the > time of writing. <<<<------ Yes it would, and the above instructions will do just that if you will create a folder for each and every thread and File (save) every reply to its' appropriate folder BEFORE Sending. There is also another feature available in OE 5.01 that may help you when gathering up several messages to send out, it is under "Message " in your top tool bar. Anytime you have two (2) or more messages selected (highlighted) click on "Message", at the very bottom of the menu you will see that "Combine and Decode" will be active, ignore the Decode part of it and use the Combine, this will take every message you have selected and combine them into one e-mail message which can be sent to someone. ( this does not delete or remove the individual messages, they are all still right where they were.),,,, no copy and pasting. ,,, neat HUH ,,,,, use "Shift + Mouse click" or "Ctrl + mouse click" to select messages ,,,,, you CANNOT select across folders. I hope this will help you some. What you REALLY want does not exist at this time. Bob Hays

    1. [OE] Cut/Copy & Paste
    2. Robert Hays
    3. FYI ,,,,,, If everyone uses Cut/Copy & Paste in their e-mails as much as I do, about 98% of the time, you may or may not know that :::::::: 1. If you select the recipients name FIRST and then create the e-mail message, you CANNOT exit the e-mail message for the purpose of copying text from various documents or other e-mails for insertion into your new message.(you can Insert an entire text document, but that's all). 2. If you create the new mail FIRST (by clicking on "New Mail"), then select the recipient, you CAN exit ( by clicking out side the message window ) the new mail as many times as needed. BTY ::: The saga of the invisible Address Book is still in progress, we have resorted to the land-line to conserve our keyboards. <g> When a solution is found, it will be posted. Bob Hays

    3. If you are doing what I think you are doing ,,,, good luck, but if you are still unable to see your contacts ,,,,, follow my last instructions for creating a empty new Address Book, and if you were able to see the fake contact in the right panel, then right click on the fake contact and delete it ,,,,, now, from within the address book, click on File/Import/Address Book ,,,, browse to find your original book that is now in the "Back Ups" folder you just created ,,, select your old .wab book and import it into your new book ,,,, and cross your fingers that the only thing that is imported is the contacts & their information. If this little maneuver works, go back to the Back Ups folder and delete the files in it, they are no good. If you wish to keep a back up of your new book ,,, COPY all files in the Address Book folder into the Back Ups folder ,,, up date now and then to keep the back ups current. I will now shut up and wait for more input. Bob Hays

    3. The only way to tell what version of IE & OE you have is to go by the Build #. The version # for the 5.01 upgrade is:: for IE = 5.00.2919.6307 for OE = 5.00.2919.6600 This has caused MUCH confusion among the computer world, why MS did not change the 5.00 part of the ver. # no one can explain. ,,,,, oh-well. Yes, that would explain the 3 windows vs 2 windows, as I am using the 5.01 upgrade. Your problem is beginning to look like a corrupt file. Everything else in your mail client appears to be set up correct and working proper, so not much left to be wrong. If it is your Ph. book itself, then upgrading will not help, unless the conversion process from ver. 5.00 to 5.01 happens to clear the error, that would just be something you hope for. You can test your Ph.book by creating an all new one like so ,,,,,,, Start\Explore\windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book ,,, create a sub folder named "Back Ups" under the Address Book folder and MOVE all files in your Address Book folder into the Back Ups folder (leave the Address Book folder empty) ,,,,,, now,,, go back to your mail program and open your address book, it will be totally empty ,,,, click on File/New contact ,,, create a contact, it does not have to be a real one, just make up one, and give him/her an address ,,, click OK ,,,,,,,, if you can now see this new contact in the right pane, then your original book is probably corrupt. (you have just created a new book from scratch so it should be OK) To get your original book back, you will have to "Import" it from within your address book. (after deleting the fake book you just created.). Back your ears and give it a try. 3. File this away in the back of your head ,,,,,, if you had a totally blank address book (no contacts or Groups entered), you will get a totally empty white right pane (no gray horz. bar). This gray bar appears ONLY when there is an entry in the address book, including Groups. This means that when you select your main folder ,,, Personal (Hughes) Contacts ,,, there should be a gray bar across the right pane, even if there were no individual contacts entered, your Groups would also be listed here and THEY would produce the gray bar. You said:::: "When I select the Personal Contacts, and just open the folder icon, nothing shows" ,,,,,,,,,,,, this is not right, you do have groups, so something should have showed up. You said:::"When I select the + sign, I get my Group Contacts. Excuse me, when I just now selected the + sign with the folder icon showing "open," I got a blank gray horizontal line the width of the right hand column and the height of one row of type" ,,,,,,,,, Getting your list of Groups on the left is correct, the blank gray line is not. ,,,,,,, right click on one of the groups and click on "Properties", you should get a list of all contacts in that Group and to the right of the Group name window, it will tell you how many contacts there are in it. ,,,,,,, how many contacts are there and can you see them ??? Lets also check this out ,,,,,,, from your mail program ,, File/Identities/Manage Identities ,,,, The large window at the top will list all identities you have created, if there is more than one, select the one you want to use, then make sure the next window down has the same name in it and the little box (Use this identity when starting a program", has a check mark in it. ,,, then make sure the third window down also has the same name in it. The bottom line here is make sure that all three of these windows have the same name in them and they should match EXACTLY (minus the word "contacts"), the name of your main folder that appears in the left hand panel of your address book when you open it. 3. I think I've tried most of what you asked before I wrote, but let me just tell you to make sure. All my OE, including address book is white/gray background with black lettering. I have Addresses/View/Folders and Groups selected, along with details. This gives me an address book display with smaller left and larger right panels. When I highlight Shared Contacts, nothing comes up except immediately below is a + sign, a folder icon and the typed line "Personal (Hughes) Contacts." When I select the Personal Contacts, and just open the folder icon, nothing shows. When I select the + sign, I get my Group Contacts. Excuse me, when I just now selected the + sign with the folder icon showing "open," I got a blank gray horizontal line the width of the right hand column and the height of one row of type. The lines of type are invisible on all colors, i.e.., the white, yellow and dark blue. Thank you so much, Bob, for taking the time to "walk" me through this. Please don't give up on me. And if anyone else has any suggestions, please send them. Nothing is too silly to try at a time like this. Surely this list ought to be able to "Think Tank" this problem and come up with an answer for the archives. I'll be out for a few hours, but I will respond as soon as I can...tonight, for sure. Elizabeth PS. When I remove the Folders and Groups check mark, the entire bottom of the Address Book is blank/white. ``````````````````````````````````` ----- Original Message ----- From: Robert Hays <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, February 13, 2000 1:16 AM Subject: Re: [OE] Address Book > OH-BOY ,,, this one has me scratching my head, the Turn blue and yellow > information pop up box is a normal response to placing your mouse on > something. > All clues indicate that somehow the Background or text color has changed so > that they are the same color ,, result = invisible text , and for the life > of me, I cannot find a way to change either of them. > You did not say what color the background was in that right hand panel > ,,, what is it ?? ,,, and what about the left panel ?? > Also I assume that you have Addresses/View/Folders and Groups selected along > with Details ,,, these settings will give you an address book display with a > left and right hand panel, Group folders on the left & the people in them on > the right ,,,, and no, you cannot edit anything in the right hand panel, > double click on a contact name or select Properties for a contact name which > will bring up the information window for that contact ,,, this is where you > do any editing for a contact. > While you are in there, see if you have a "Shared Contacts" folder, if > so, see who is in it, if someone totally unknown to you, delete them ,,,, no > telling who you may be sharing all your information with. <g> > If I am correct about your Addresses/View/Folders and Groups settings, > try a test, --->> remove the check mark in front of "Folders and Groups, this > will change your address book to a single panel display ,,,,,, can you now > see all your contacts and their information ???? > Waiting on pins and needles > Bob Hays > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Elizabeth Hughes" <[email protected]> > To: <[email protected]> > Sent: Saturday, February 12, 2000 1:45 PM > Subject: [OE] Address Book > > > > Please bear with me, as I'm not too "computer savvy." 3. Firstly, thanks Robert for your prompt reply to my OE query. Started by trying SFC.....found only one file with a query and that was something called mxwin32.dll which is a system application extension file of about 5K and which was created a few days after I got this PC and is thus probably something to do with initial configuring etc. Also, it was created before I got my ISP connection so I don't think it has anything to do with this OE problem. Next, I thought I would try the OE re-installation.............fine except that I can't find the OE or the IE programs on my WIN 98 disk or the Gateway system disk or the Gateway 2000 disk which has MS Money 3.0/MS Office/ Professional 4.3 on it ! ! ! I shall doubtless be able to borrow a copy somewhere around here. Incidentally, you may wonder why I don't go to my friendly neighbourhood PC dealer............plenty of dealers in Fiji but they're all equally hopeless and masters of ripoffs. I imported this PC myself from NZ about 18 months ago so it's all a bit compliqué. Will let you know how it goes and once again.....many thanks. Dick Best P.S. Don't know when this will leave here as Telecom have wrecked our local distribution U/G cable in the process of installing another. 3. OH-BOY ,,, this one has me scratching my head, the Turn blue and yellow information pop up box is a normal response to placing your mouse on something. All clues indicate that somehow the Background or text color has changed so that they are the same color ,, result = invisible text , and for the life of me, I cannot find a way to change either of them. You did not say what color the background was in that right hand panel ,,, what is it ?? ,,, and what about the left panel ?? Also I assume that you have Addresses/View/Folders and Groups selected along with Details ,,, these settings will give you an address book display with a left and right hand panel, Group folders on the left & the people in them on the right ,,,, and no, you cannot edit anything in the right hand panel, double click on a contact name or select Properties for a contact name which will bring up the information window for that contact ,,, this is where you do any editing for a contact. While you are in there, see if you have a "Shared Contacts" folder, if so, see who is in it, if someone totally unknown to you, delete them ,,,, no telling who you may be sharing all your information with. <g> If I am correct about your Addresses/View/Folders and Groups settings, try a test, --->> remove the check mark in front of "Folders and Groups, this will change your address book to a single panel display ,,,,,, can you now see all your contacts and their information ???? 3. Nope ,,,, I think you are doing an excellent job. I can better serve the list by not having to worry about that end of it, ,,, besides, being retired and not independently wealthy, I am prong to get a wild hair up my nose and depart for parts unknown for a week or two. <g> Save all these procedures (that work) and build yourself a Data Base to fall back on. Hang in there, you are doing just fine. 3. OK, Dick ,,, don't give up yet, ,,got a few more tricks up our sleeve. I'm not sure if the following will also include OE but you need to do it anyhow ,,,, click on start/settings/control Panel/Add/Remove Programs ,,, scroll down to and select "Internet Explorer 5 and Internet Tools" ,,, click on the Add/Remove button ,,, from the three options you will be presented with, choose the middle one "Repair Internet Explorer", then click OK. answer the questions to let it do its' thing. (this will examine IE and auto. correct anything it finds wrong, unless it cannot, then you will have to intervene and help it.) You can get OE 5 from the MS Win 98 update site ,,,,, follow this trail ---->> Start/Windows Update(at very top of the Start menu) ,,,, this will take you to the Win 98 update site, when there, click on "Product Updates" , answer yes to any questions and wait for the site to examine your hard disk for installed components. When it is through, you will be presented with a list of available upgrades and patches listed and labeled according to importance. All of the Critical updates should be downloaded and installed and certain ones of all the others. Some of the "others" are a matter of choice and some are a Must, such as Direct X 7.0a. The download and install will be automatic when you click on "Download selected components),,,,,,,, anyhow, back to the task at hand, to reinstall something, find and click on the blue button labeled " Show Installed Updates" , this will give you a list of updates already installed , scroll down the list to Outlook Express 5, put a check mark in the little box in front of it,,, then click on the "Download" button. OE 5 will be downloaded and installed for you. A word of caution ,,,,, before doing this, shut down any and all running programs except Explorer & System Tray, use Ctrl+Alt+Delete (CAD) to END all running programs.. If all this fails, you may have to uninstall OE5 then reinstall and hope you don't lose all your saved e-mails ,,,, may have to back them up on a floppy from C:\windows\Application Data\Microsoft\(Outlook Express & all its' sub-folders), then can replace them if need be. Good luck ,,,, again Bob Hays

    3. Hi Bob, I was wondering - would you care to be the listowner of this mail list? You seem to know so much about OE and always have the right advice to give out for help. I only took this list on because it said it was adoptable...I would love to see someone with as much knowledge as you have to be the listowner. Please let me know what you think? 3. Please bear with me, as I'm not too "computer savvy." I have a problem with my address book. All my entries except for the group entries are hidden from me. When I bring up the address book, the entire right hand portion of the program is blank. What's even more baffling to me is that if my cursor land on that part of the screen, it highlights a blank yellow line, as though the info was there. Then, that line will turn blue and a yellow box will pop up with the information on the individual contact in the box. However, that box only stays up a matter of seconds and it, too, departs. But even though I might luck out and land on the individual I want, I can't edit the information or anything else. This problem doesn't keep me from sending messages. If I go into a new message form and bring up the address book for an e-mail address, all is fine. It's just when I try to get other info out of the address book, like telephone numbers, home addresses, etc., that the problem rears it's ugly little head. My "significant other" accessed my address book immediately prior to this situation, but he says he didn't do anything...right!!! I certainly would appreciate any help on fixing my address book. The problem is that I now rely on it for all my phone numbers, even if someone has no e-mail, since I'm usually sitting right here in front of my computer, and it's so handy.
