When I contracted Kak it blew my signature file because it hits there first. I removed the signature file after reading about the worm. Is your signature file still in place or did you set in a new one? Be sure to manually search for Kak and .hta as well as using McAfee for scanning. I independently discovered another file that had not been removed by McAfee. Elaine KHarrison wrote: > > I need help again : ) > > I must have contacted the kak virus. I need help again : ) I must have contacted the kak virus. The first hint of it was everytime I booted up... a dialog box popped up stating that this kak file could not be imported. I didn't think much of it...but it was annoying. Yesterday, I checked my PC with the McAffee virus scan (which I have had all along..so how did I get it?? I pay attention to the McAffee warnings and will not open anything that remotely resembles their warnings.) I found it by using my McAffee Scan....and I think they got rid of it. But I don't know what damage was done in the process. Now before every message I send, a dialog box pops up saying "Warning: The signature file specified does not exist The signature feature has been disabled." But otherwise, I have found no other problems ...as of yet!! Can anyone tell me if they have run across this virus..or know what is the meaning of the signature file box popping up, since "deleting" the virus? Thanks so much for any help! Thanks Robert and Dee for your suggestions....I will try them and see if it solves my problem. You are both so helpful....and knowledgeable. Thank you! Kathy
Dear Kathy, If it is a Word document, you can download for free a "MS Word 97 Viewer" from the Microsoft site. Go to their site and do a search for it. This Viewer will allow you to read only the document. You can't edit the document. If you want to edit it, you will have to buy the full program from Microsoft. If the attachments are too light, I can read with the viewer. I have done this with great results. I don't have the Word program, only Word Pad. There is a difference. Good luck. Dee. ----- Original Message ----- From: "KHarrison" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: May 21, 2000 9:29 AM Subject: [OE] Wordpad to ? > Hello All, > I am in need of help again. Kathy ,,, please excuse me here, but not being at all familiar with Wordpad I don't exactly understand your situation. I have checked my version of Wordpad and can see provisions for Sending email from there but none for receiving them directly to Wordpad (bypassing OE) or handling them once they arrive there. OE uses the extension .eml for all messages saved to disk and all attachments saved to disk will retain their original extension. All I can do in an attempt to help is make a wild assumption that you may have first received the email in OE, then moved it to Wordpad, and now wish to get it back into OE. If this is the case, then the original message may still be stored on your disk as a .eml file, if it is, then double click on it and OE will reopen it. ,,,, If it is the attachment you are having trouble with and not the body of the message, then you better proceed with extreme caution and not open it unless you 100% trust where it came from and was expecting it to arrive, and not even then until it has been scanned with an up to date virus scanner. As far as opening it, it depends on the format it is in, and the only way to tell is to look at the extension. I will not elaborate on this, there are too many of them, but I will say that if the extension is .VBS or any variation of VBS, then BEWARE, that is the current virus making the rounds. There is also a virus making the rounds that can infect you that is NOT contained in an attachment, it arrives in your mail box as a HTML message, just looking at it and you are infected, any good UPDATED AV program should detect and stop it, or in OE, it can be stopped without an AV program if you go into IE and change your security setting from Medium to High ,,, click APPLY, then go back and look at it. Better get off my soap box, this is not what you ask for. Perhaps someone more familiar with Wordpad can offer more help. Hello All, I am in need of help again. I have rec'd an attachment in wordpad....and I would like to know if I can change this to a different format for easier reading. I have OE5. Thanks so much, Kathy [email protected]
I forgot to mention that in the section where you select what to do with the messages....you can select delete them (they will be moved to the "Trash"), do not download from server (meaning they won't even be downloaded) or delete from server (they won't be downloaded and will be deleted from your ISP's server). Hello everybody, I just wanted to share my easy spam filters for Outlook Express 5. First of all, get a list of all the mailing list you are on and write down all of your e-mail addresses. 1) Click on Tools-Message Rules-Mail 2) Click on "New" 3) Check "Where To or Cc line contains people" 4) Click on "contains people" down at the bottom--it's underlined & in blue 5) Enter your e-mail address and the addresses of all the lists you are on. If you are a listowner you will also want to enter the -request (if you set up your list so that you get a copy of subscribe and unsubscribe requests) and -admin addresses here to I know most people probably know this, but I thought I would share this with the newbies out there who are just learning about computers, e-mail and the internet. Sincerely, Kim Ivey mailto:[email protected]
You are the second one this week with "invalid memory access" problems, must be an epidemic. Four things you might check into: 1. ::: Start / Settings / Add/Remove Programs ,,, find and select "Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 and Internet Tools (or something similar),,,, click on the Add/Remove button ,,,, on the left side of the window that pops up will be three options ,,, select the one "Repair Internet Explorer" ,,, click OK (if you do not have this utility, cancel out of there and do nothing) If this repair utility encounters a problem it can not fix by itself, it will stop and give you a description of what is wrong , click on "Details", be sure and write it down so we can get it fixed. The utility will abort until the problem is fixed. Lets see if this maneuver will fix the problem or at least turn up something. 2. Do a search for Wsock32.dll and see if you have multiple copies other than the one required in the C:\Windows\System folder. If you find multiple copies, rename all but the one in Windows\System folder. 3. Graphic card drivers outdated. Right click My Computer icon, Properties, Performance tab, Graphics button and move the slider two notches to the left, OK your way out and reboot. If solved, updated your display adapter drivers from the manufacturer's website. (be sure to return the slider to where it was) 4. Rules damage or illogical rules. See http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q225/0/96.asp. Many thanks to Kim Ivey, Dee Randall, and Bob Hays for the three ways of saving/printing error messages. Dee Randall has an ISP who helps solve problems ! ! ! #,*$*..........don't relocate to Fiji ! Dick Best.
Dear Dick, I use HandyPrint to print/and or save the error messages. You can put lines around what you want to save or print, just like you do when you are scanning a picture and then it just saves that portion of the page;i.e., your error messages. I use this when I want to save my error messages to send to my isp to help me out solving the problem. It is a FREE download. I like it. It's very easy to use. You do indeed now have OE 5.01 ,, Congratulations. Using OE ver. 5.01, the messages in a digest can be extracted as individual, stand alone messages by double clicking (a MUST) on the digest in the preview pane, (do not use the paper clip to open). ,,, in the window that opens, highlight all messages at once then drag&drop them into any folder, (You MUST Drag&Drop, do not use save, Save As or Copy to). You can now deal with them as separate individual messages, just like all the other messages in your Inbox. If you do not want to mix the digest messages in with your regular Inbox messages, create a folder just for the digest ones.,,, When you double click on the digest, you may have to move the screen that opens over to the right to uncover your regular folders. Hi Bob and all, Ok - I went and downloaded 5.0 and need help! I have always lived with the fact that OE treated mail list digests as attachments. It was a pain in the neck to have to open each attachment but I could live with it. I would open only those that needed my attention (I am a listowner of 20 some mail lists). I had hoped that the new version -- oh hope of hope -- had some better way to handle this problem - but it appears to be worst than before. Now I have to choose to open or save each attachment before I can do anything! YUK!! I did find the attachment button to the side of my screen so atleast I can see the titles. Please tell me if there is a button somewhere for me to switch so I can read all my digest mail with ease???? Best Wishes, Carol Hepburn [email protected] Phoenix, AZ USA Home: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~cheps/ Work: http://www.acepromotions.net
Dick and Listmembers, Here's what I do to copy an error message (this is assuming that my system didn't lock-up): 1) Click on the "Details" button 2) Highlight the text 3) Click the right mouse button and select "Copy" 4) Open Notepad 5) Select "Edit-Paste" from the drop down menu 6) Print the error message You will have to type in the "This program has performed an illegal operation...." part. Hope this helps! Sincerely, Kim Ivey mailto:[email protected]
Hello all,,,,,,,,,, can anyone tell me how to print or save the "Details" in error msgs which are of the type "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be closed down". Have tried Print Screen with and without selecting etc., but nothing does the trick. Maybe it stays in a log somewhere but can't find. This is all with WIN98 OE5 by the way and consists of many detailed lines of stuff concerning KERNEL32.dll Thanks. Dick.
