    1. [OE] Importing address book from Outlook98 to Works
    2. Dee
    3. I have purchased Works Suite 2001 which includes Works 6.0 which includes Word 2000. I have been able to import my address book from Outlook Express into Works 6.0 which shows up in my email address book at the top of my email page. However, I have another address book in (Microsoft) Outlook98 which I would like to import into 6.0. But I cannot do this. I've tried EXPORTING this address book from Outlook 98 as a file (.mdb, .csv, etc. ) but none of these work to bring in the address book to 6.0 since the files are not Works data base files. It says that it wants .wdb or .bdb. There's a lot of addresses to bring in, and even if they did come in, I'm wondering if they would merge with the other address book brought in from Outlook Express. Does anyone know of a way to do this? Dee Randall

    3. Thank you Bob, This solved a problem that I have been having for a long, long time. I have my OE set up to automatically log on to my ISP, so anytime anyone sent me mail that was written in HTML, and I was reading my mail off-line, the log on window would come up. I click "cancel" and it would fade and then come up again. Sometimes 6 or 7 times. Now I can turn it off (by double clicking on it in the bottom status bar), and I am able now to read the e-mails without that irritation. Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you. P.S. I really learn more about Windows 98 from your answers and this list, than anything else. And for that -- thank-you.... The "Help" menus usually don't help me because I always look up the wrong word or phrase. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Robert Hays" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, September 02, 2000 6:42 PM Subject: Re: [OE] working online and working offline <snip> > Some people set up OE to automatically > log on to their ISP every time they start OE, I am not sure (I never use it) but I > think it can be used to stop the log on prompt when actually working Off Line if you > are set up to auto. log on when OE is open. > You can turn it on and off by double clicking on it in the bottom status bar. > Not much of an answer but all I have. > Bob Hays >

    3. John & Sue ,,,, the On Line / Off Line thing is more of a question generator than anything else. It is not an automatic switch that detects what mode you are in, it stays in which ever mode you put it in until you change it. Some people set up OE to automatically log on to their ISP every time they start OE, I am not sure (I never use it) but I think it can be used to stop the log on prompt when actually working Off Line if you are set up to auto. log on when OE is open. You can turn it on and off by double clicking on it in the bottom status bar. Not much of an answer but all I have. I know that if you have it as working offline and you send/receive it will prompt you you to go online but when the connection to the internet drops the line it still shows at the bottom working online all of the time. I have always had it this way but I am curious why this working online offline is necessary for outlook express. Comments appreciated John Stevens MAM Software Ltd [email protected]

    2. Robert Hays
    3. Yea Bob ,,,, there are several ways to do that. 1. Click on New Mail, address to yourself, enter a pertinent "Subject", then Copy & Paste what you want to keep from the message into the new mail ,,,, DO NOT SEND the new mail ,,, SAVE it, this will save it into your "Drafts" folder, from there, Drag & Drop it into whatever folder you wish. 2. Click on "Reply", Reply All" or "Forward", this will open the message so that it can be edited ,,, highlight and delete everything you do not want to keep ,,, again, DO NOT SEND ,,, SAVE it as above. NOTES on using the save features: 1. If you use "Save" : A) The message will be saved in the "Drafts" folder. B) Will need to be moved to a folder of your choice. C) The "To" field will retain the original recipients name. D) The "Subject" field will retain the original subject information. 2. If you use "Copy To Folder" : A) The message will be saved to the folder of your choice. B) The "From" field will be changed to your name. C) The "Subject" field will retain the original subject information. 3. If you use "Save As" : A) The message will be saved to a folder on your hard drive. 1. If saved as a .eml file: a) File name is the same as the "Subject" field. b) can be reopened in OE by double clicking on it. c) can also be opened in a text editor. d) contains message body and headers. 2. If saved as a .txt file: a) File name is the same as the "Subject" field. b) cannot be reopened in OE by double clicking on it. c) can be opened in a text editor. d) contains message body only ,,, no headers 3. If saved as a Unicode Text file : a) File name is the same as the "Subject" field. b) Saved as an encoded file. c) Sorry ,,, that's all I know about this one. 3. There are two methods. One is to forward and remove everything that you don't want. Send it to yourself or save as a draft and move it to the folder where you want to keep it. Another means is to drag the mouse (with the button held down) over the text that you want, then press Control C (hold the control while pressing C). Start a new email or document and click in the message section or body of the new document and press Control V to paste. This will be the clean text. To get a picture (jpg) you can also forward the email containing it and erase all text and the jpg will still be attached. Or you can right click and save the attachment to a location that you can find. (My documents or desktop). 3. I have so many file folders in my outlook express, even though I have the little +'s to close them, that it has become quite a nuisance to scroll down the list and pick out the folder that I want to move my email to. I'm beginning to think that if I could write the name of the folder that I want to move the email to, that it would be sooooo much quicker. Has anyone heard of this? The same goes for my "Favorites" which I am constantly having to scroll down. DeeDovey

    3. RELIEF! I tried everything that anyone suggested regarding alphabetizing "My documents" after I wrote the below: ------- Quote, My document folder file icons/lists are constantly disordering themselves (un-alphabetizing themselves). They do this almost immediately after I have been thru the "resort the icons" by name procedure unquote ----- I found the answer here entitled, "Items in 'Open' and 'Save As' Dialog Boxes Sorted Incorrectly." and the Cause as "This behavior can occur if the sort order in Windows Explorer is changed from the default order." I believe there are about 5 clicks. Easy if you know how! http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q229/0/70.asp Thanks Robert for your diligence! You are very helpful and always respond. 3. Dee ,,, am still working on your problem. Check this out. Start / Run / Regedit HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ Explorer If you have "nosavesettings" In the right pane and its' value is 01 00 00 00 ,,,, this is telling win98 not to save configuration settings. The value should be "00 00 00 00" If you need to change this setting (&lets hope you do) and don't know how, get back with me before attempting. Don't mess around in Regedit or you could shut down your whole computer, its' OK to look, but don't change.
