    2. I downloaded and installed Internet Explorer 5.1 (?) two days ago..A problem occurred shortly after when I started to compose an e-mail..The cursor would move as I typed but no letters appeared..I decided to e-mail myself to see if there were in fact any words in the body of the message..I just hit some random letters and sent it..The spell check worked as it indicated a misspelled word..The e-mail was blank when I received it.. I shut down and restarted the computer.. Opened Outlook Express again and everything worked fine..Now, after a dozen or so e-mails, it has happened again.. Anyone else experiencing this?.. Thanks.. Claudia.. (Windows 98)

    1. Re: [OE] Leaving computer on 24/7
    2. Robert Hays
    3. To better understand what this question is all about, you need to know about what evil forces are at work. 1. Current surge (most evil of all) 2. Heat 3. Expansion & Contraction (very close second to #1) 4. Moisture 5. Friction Friction includes anything that moves. In a computer this would be your floppy drives, CD drives, hard drive and cooling fans. Modern floppy , CD & hard drives are designed to not spin unless called on to do a job, so these for the most part can be ruled out as a consideration, and so can cooling fans. Just how long cooling fans last depends on whether they have bushings or ball bearings, in either case they are cheap enough to not be considered, just check them often to make sure they are still running, MANY computer problems are caused by over heating. (read about one man who put 13 fans in his tower to keep his puter from over heating and become unstable) Moisture is not a real consideration as long as the computer is used in an A/C atmosphere. Heat, expansion & contraction go hand and hand together. When an object is heated then cooled it will expanded when hot and contract when cooled, it can also cause some inferior printed circuit boards to warp, this constant flexing of its' attached parts and connections can cause them to fatigue and break or pull apart. The only way to prevent this is to maintain a constant temperature. Current Surge ,,,,, this is the real killer, a common example of what it can do can be illustrated with the common household incandescent light bulb. How many times have you flipped on the light switch only to have the light bulb flash, pop ,,,, then go dark ,,,,,,, current surge did it. I will say that anytime something has deteriorated to the point that a CS (current surge) can knock it out, its' getting ready to go anyhow. The difference being that with on/off it may last 3 months and with constant on may last 5 months (example numbers only). CS can really damage your monitor more so than the computer, reason being that the monitor is the only remaining part of a system that still has a filament in its' picture tube, and on/off operation will accelerated its' deterioration to a point that the CS will finish it off. CS is caused by applying a source of current (voltage) to a device that has no control over it, so the current can run rampant until the device gains control. (this does not apply to a lighting strike) You don't have to worry about wearing out a solid state device, you can't do it, there is nothing to wear out. The only way to make one fail is to violate what it was designed to do which boils down to too much current or too much heat (which causes too much current). There are numerous situations that can cause an electronic circuit to go bezerk and destroy itself but that is outside the realms of this novel. So in summary, its' really a matter of opinion. Daily on/off should give you many years of service ,,,,,, and so will constant on ,,,,,,,, and God bless them all, may they out live us. 3. Hi Kathy, I am not sure what the actual answer is to your question but I can tell you from experience that when I was working in customer support for a very large database manufacturer in Silcon Valley, CA we ALWAYS left our computers on. The computer operations folks said that it was better for the life of the computer to keep them turned on. We did not turn the monitor off -- but had the screen go black (or to sleep) every 10 minutes of non-use. My understanding back then was that the power supplies fail first and the techs felt the surge of power from powering on and off was the culprit. They also felt that the surge of power going to the peripherals was not good so we left our printers on too. Now I know that in the ensuing years (this was back in 1985-1991) equipment technology has changed and PCs are pretty cheap (you can get replacement parts for them very easily and at a good price). I turn my computer off every night - mainly this is because I have a LAN in my home and every evening we shut it down (computers, modems and routers). My DSL technicians recommended shutting down my entire system every night or atleast every couple of days because the modem and router will literally burn out from always being left on. It seems that the routers and modems (cable) made for home or small business use are not as hardy as those that are made for large business needs! Anyway, my recommendation is to power off every evening :o) I have been doing this for many years without any problems to my systems (we have two - an IMAC and an HP Pavilion). But should you choose to leave yours on - I am sure that is just fine too! 3. You're quite right--I'm using Outlook, not OE. Would like to print out all the info in the entry block for appointments (full name, maybe contact tel number, place of meeting). So far the only way I've been able to do this (other than by adjusting the font which doesn't do much) is by extending the end time of the meeting which enlarges the block in the printout. Tried inserting "return" in the text to force addition of line but that didn't work either. Any suggestions appreciated! ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Stevens" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, September 18, 2000 10:15 AM Subject: Re: [OE] Calendars-printing without truncating > It looks like your talking about ms outlook as outlook express > does not have a calendar. 3. I have purchased Works Suite 2001 which includes Works 6.0 which includes Word 2000. Forget answering this. I did it one by one, took me a lot of time, but worth it not having to wrestle with Microsoft's software. Dee. I have been able to import my address book from Outlook Express into Works 6.0 which shows up in my email address book at the top of my email page. However, I have another address book in (Microsoft) Outlook98 which I would like to import into 6.0. But I cannot do this. I've tried EXPORTING this address book from Outlook 98 as a file (.mdb, .csv, etc. ) but none of these work to bring in the address book to 6.0 since the files are not Works data base files. It says that it wants .wdb or .bdb.
