    3. Sort of...works the same. In fact, the keyboard code is always shown in the bottom corner of the map. Character map is an accessory connected to my Windows setup, just like Word Pad, Games, etc. It list the Special characters by fonts and you see them to easily find the exact one you need. I usually use it to utilize the Spanish characters, and recently to use some math characters for a spread sheet project. It works fine when I use on ICQ, but not with OE...I have used it here before. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Robert Hays" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, December 22, 2000 2:51 PM Subject: Re: [OE] Character map : Well ,,,, I guess I am going to have to play dumb here, are you talking : about the special characters that can be inserted into documents by using : the Alt. key + a number on your right numeric key pad ???? : If not, please explain in MUCH more detail what is happening. : Bob Hays : ________________________________________ : ----- Original Message ----- : From: "Timothy Braswell" <[email protected]> : To: <[email protected]> : Sent: Tuesday, December 19, 2000 2:49 PM : Subject: [OE] Character map : : : > I have been using my character map for some time, but now it isn't working : > right. : > It works with my ICQ messages, but not my e-mail...what's happened? : > : > Jen in AL : > : > : > ==== OUTLOOK-EXPRESS Mailing List ==== : > To remove your email address from this list, visit this url: : http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~cheps/maillist.htm : > : > ============================== : > Get Free Access to over 900 million names from Dec 7 until Dec : 21!http://www.ancestry.com/home/celebrate/freeaccess.htm?sourcecode=736 : > : : : ==== OUTLOOK-EXPRESS Mailing List ==== : To remove your email address from this list, visit this url: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~cheps/maillist.htm : : ============================== : The easiest way to stay in touch with your family and friends! : http://www.myfamily.com/banner.asp?ID=RWLIST1 : :

    3. Click on file at upper left of monitor screen, click on "save as" when save menu comes up, designate 3 1/2 inch disk, designate or type in name you want for file and then designate either eml or txt extension (either works, just that the eml extension leaves all the headers on). 1. [OE] Outlook Express messages in limbo

    3. My daughter, in all her wisdom, had a cleanout of all my genealogical messages in Outlook Express and moved the folders and their messages to MyDocuments/Outlook.. I have tried to open them there and cannot read them as they are all gibberish.. I have tried to import them back to Outlook Express and receive this message: "The specified message could not be opened. It may be in use by Outlook Express" and upon clicking OK I get "No message can be found in this folder or another application is running that has the required files open. Please select another folder or try closing applications that may have files open." When I click properties on the different folders some are 1.2mb, some 850kb, and so on. So the messages must be there, not just folders. I have renamed the folders in an effort to open them but to no avail. Can you help? Jenny

    3. I do not have Outlook so I know nothing about it, all I can do is offer suggestions. 1. Restore the original folder names, there may be an index file somewhere that needs them. 2. Make sure a folder of the same name does not already exist in OE. 3. Try Importing back into OE and make sure Outlook is not running. 3. Bob, Thanks for all your help. Right now I am just concentrating on trying to subscribe to an AT&T newsgroup, as they are already configured in my mail. All settings are as you mentioned, except that "Always connect to this account using" is checked and underneath is the drop-down menu with Local Area Network showing. I am assuming these are the original settings as I was using newsgroups before very easily. You suggested that the above "Always connect...." be unchecked. Would that affect anything else, do you think? This computer appears to be very proprietary. When I change settings to accomplish one thing, it appears to affect another. Mostly, I like it. But it does get a little irritating at times. It is great for graphics, and it has some nice features. Oh,the port setting is 119. Wonder why the error message says 0? Also thinking out loud about why they SSL would be involved when it is unchecked. 3. > You suggested that the above "Always connect...." be unchecked. Would that > affect anything else, do you think? ## No it would not, all it would do is change from "Always use Local area network" to "Any available" , this is mostly used by people who use more than one ISP, it allows them to check for incoming mail stored on several ISP's and read News Groups from any ISP without getting that annoying question about whether to log off where you are and log on to another ISP. Naturally you can do as you wish, but I think you are just asking for trouble by trying to read News Groups on one server by way of a totally different server, not all News Servers are created equal. I have three different News Groups set up and all three appear as a different Folder with its' own server just for that News Group and its' list of forums. If nothing else, go ahead and set up a NEW account for Microsoft just to see if it works, all you have to do to remove it is click on it in your list of News Accounts and click on "Remove" ,,,,, and its' gone. If it does work, then you probably need to Remove the AT&T account and re-set it up. If all this does not work, I am at a loss also, I know nothing about Win ME, ,,,,,, I am still in the dark ages with Win 98 ,,,, where I intend to stay for some time to come. I subscribed from the following page: http://support.microsoft.com/support/default.asp?PR=winme&FR=0&SD=GN&LN=EN-U S The list is called microsoft.public.windowsme.new-user. It is a pretty good newsgroup and helped me out a lot with some of the little oddities of ME. Now, when I click on it, my mailbox opens and a big window informs me of the message I posted. 3. I do not know how you are attempting to sub to the Win ME group, but it should be sub.'ed to through the official MS forums at --> msnews.microsoft.com . If you haven't already done so, set up a new News account and use --->> msnews.microsoft.com as the news server. There are two groups currently available: 1. microsoft.public.opk.millennium 2. microsoft.public.sbk.millennium Hope this helps your problem Bob Hays ______________________________________________ ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bruce Cardner" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, November 26, 2000 12:38 PM Subject: [OE] Error when subscribing to newsgroups > I used the Microsoft Windows ME newsgroup for a while. Now when I attempt to subscribe again, I get an unidentified error message: Configuration: Protocol: NNTP Port 0 Secure (SSL):0 Code 8004005 I had Zone Alarm when I used the list before, and it was ok. I have mostly my original default settings on OE 5.5. I decided to try an AT&T newsgroup, but also got the error message as well. Does anyone have any ideas? 3. Thank you for your input, it saved me the trouble of finding out for myself. Just today I also found out that this scheme is just not working. SOooo, as you said, that leaves us with only the Rules to do the job. I now have a rule set up to cover two of my most frequent spammer domains ,,,,,,, got my fingers crossed. You can rest easy on them being notified that their spam has been blocked ,,, that does not happen. You can aim for the head if you wish but I had a lower part of the anatomy in mind. 3. Robert Hays, Thank you for the advice on flexibility of setting up 'Rules'. I had only been entering one 'condition', as in sending wanted mail into various folders. Also, I did same as you, and used modify the Blocked Sender list to remove the prefix to the "@" in order to block a domain. However, in the example of "@bigfoot.com" it was not effective, so I changed it to "bigfoot.com" (leaving out "@"). I don't think either worked, and I think it is because somewhere in HELP* it says that some formats cannot BE blocked. Some (Most?) spam must be written/sent in the format that cannot be blocked.. *(See under HELP, Blocking Domains and the paragraph marked Important.) Perhaps the best option must be to use Message Rules and by using combinations of various 'And' & 'Or' conditions, send some domains to Delete Folder. This will keep spam out of the Inbox. However, IF the spammer receives 'the word' that his spam was blocked, then we are denied the particular satisfaction of knowing we've left them with a 'parting shot', soda speak... On the other hand, I don't know if any notification DOES go back to the spammer... I wish someone would invent a Spam Snake -- something that; 'crawls' back up the line to the jerksters that send that crap; pushes a lever that; activates a hammer that; bops them on the head. 1. Re: [OE] messages going to deleted items folder
    2. Robert Hays
    3. I agree with you on how worthless "Block Sender" is on stopping spammers, it is mostly effective for stopping mail that always come from the same person or domain. I have been collecting these spam messages for the last two weeks and so far I have collected 46 of them. Now that I have a small collection, I can see that many of them have the same domain name with a different user name in front of the @ ,,,,, so the thing to do in this case is to open your Blocked Sender list ,, click on one of them ,,, click on "Modify" and remove everything in front of the @ ,,, this will block the whole domain ,,,, just be sure you never receive mail from that domain that you do want. As far as the Rules go, they are not picky at all as to what you put in them as triggers, just make sure that the correct type of words and/or characters is used in the correct fields and make use of the Boolean operators "or" & "And" to construct a rule that will work exactly the way you want and exclude all others. These operators can be strung out and used to connect as many words or phrases as is needed to construct a rule that will work for you. You can also use more than one field in your Rule, (From), (To), Subject) and (Body). When you have your Rule finished, read it very carefully, it will work exactly the way you read it. If you use the operator "And" to filter on two or more words, then ALL the words/characters must be present, and if you use the operator "or" to filter on two or more words/characters, then the rule will trigger on any one of the words/characters. You can mix the two operators, so get creative. When you read the Rule back to yourself, emphasize the two operators, it will help you understand how the Rule will work. The danger you face in creating a Rule is that it will also filter out mail you don't want filtered, so something unique about the mail you do want filtered must be found and filter on that. Rules can also be set up to help you manage your mail, as an exp., I have a rule set up for every list I am sub.'ed to so that each one will appear in my message list in a different color ,,, I can just glance at my list of messages and know that all the Red ones belong to a certain list and all the Green ones belong to another list , etc., etc. ,,,, no reading required. (Black is reserved for my personal private mail ,,,,, and Spam, <g>) Good luck Bob Hays ________________________________________________________ Original Message ----- From: "Sue Alberts" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, November 22, 2000 9:18 PM Subject: Re: [OE] messages going to deleted items folder > Robert Hays, I have been using 'Blocked Sender' on spam.
