That is really up to you, but would suggest creating a folder under C:\My Documents and name it something that will remind you of what is stored in it. So far, I understand this, but where on my hard drive should I post my message? Yes you can: The first thing you will have to do is compose a text msg. and store it in a permanent place on your hard drive. ,, then: Tools / Message Rules / Mail / Mail Rules tab / New: In the #1 window, select "Where the message has an attachment" In the #2 window, select "Reply with message" In the #3 window, click on the blue underlined "Message", in the box that opens, navigate to your reply msg. and select it. In the #4 window, delete what is in there and enter your own name for the rule. Click OK at bottom of page That should do it. I am a new lister on the OE list and I'm looking for an answer which I haven't been able to get on several other lists. I need simple instructions on how to backup OE folders and files using Microsoft Backup. Sorry to say that solutions using other hardware and processes such as Zip are not financially possible. I used to backup OE version 4 with MC Backup and it worked fine, several diskettes of course but it worked and the only time I had to restore (reformat C drive and reinstall everything) it worked fine. This is not so with Version 5. I have created a Backup job which I run and from which I get a report showing very few folders/files have been backed up and, most worrying, the number of bytes backed up appears to stay the same whenever I run Backup. I can document all the details of this but If someone can quickly catch on to whet I am doing wrong then it will save a lot of typing. Hope to hear from someone as I'm sure that lots of listers are happily and easily doing this on a regular basis. Norman Backhouse [email protected]
To have more than one store Go to your store icon , click change location you can choose your old mail store folder and when you reboot all your mail and old folders will be there , PS when the menu pops up to and says there is mail in this folder , do you want to use it any way, choose yes, it will then use that folder when you restart OE , I have 5 message Stores with old mail I go to when I need to, you should also not do this on line , also set you mail reader not to download messages till you are sure its it set up the way you want so you do not down load messages to a place you do not want. You message store is normally in windows under Application Data, and Identities, you can locate it any place you wish I keep mine in another partition on D drive so if I loose C it will not affect my mail So you mail could be like this C:\Windows\identities\12324the numbers\Microsoft\Outlookexpress\ D:\My Mail\ then all your mail will be here , a complete store you can access any time. One e-mail address I download to a R CD , but if you do this you also must move it to a HD and change the attributes from read only to archive If you plan to move all you mail the hard way from one system to another by disk, be sure to copy ALL the files and put them all back, OE is a data base it needs all the files , and all you folders will work, you will need to make new filters. Favorites and address book folders can be moved too. Hi Bob, Thank you for taking the time & trouble writing down all this help. I have checked as instructed. Two observations: I have two URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol listed. If I follow your instructions on both they are set up exactly as you say. BUT On one of them the description title that comes up when you first open it to edit says URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol with Privacy the other says URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol I wonder if this is something to do with the problem...guess!! If this is a red herring, it's back to you. Hello fellow listers, I am hoping someone can help me with a technical problem. Recently out of the blue I have found I cannot go to any URL from within Outlook Express. I have not changed any settings, other than loading I.E.5.5. It was working fine in this new version, I have checked my settings but do not know which one relates to URL links. Any help would be appreciated. Derek Brooks, Goonhavern, Cornwall, UK
OK Derek ,,, the first thing to check is your file associations: On your desk top, double click on your "My Computer" icon ,,,, click on "View", then "Folder Options", then "File Types" tab ,,, scroll down the list to URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol ,, there will be a long list of URL:XXXXXXXXXXX but URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol is the one you want. ,,, Under "File type details" should be : 1. Extension: "blank" 2. Content Type (MIME): 3. Opens with: IEXPLORE Now, click on "Edit" ,,, in the windows for # 1, 2, 3, & 4 should be: 1. URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol 2. Grayed out 3. Grayed out 4. Open Confirm open after download should be checked. Click on Open ,,, click on Edit ,,, in these windows should be: 1. Action: Grayed out 2. Application used to perform action: "C:\PROGRA~1\INTERN~1\iexplore.exe" -nohome NOTE: this is the short file name format, the actual words are ,, "C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET EXPLORER\iexplore.exe" -nohome ,,,,,,,, if this is not correct in your computer, it is best to use Browse to find iexplore.exe to ensure that the path is correct. If you have to change this, when you are finished, make sure it looks EXACTLY like the Short or Long file name format ,,, substituting your changes of course. The important thing here is the path to iexplore.exe , in quotes with (space)-nohome at the end 3. Use DDE: should be checked 4. DDE Message: "%1",,-1,0,,,, 5. Application: IExplore 6. DDE Application Not Running: blank 7. Topic: WWW_OpenURL OK & Close your way all the way out and try it. Every thing presented above should be EXACTLY as presented, including quote marks. Lets hope and pray you find your problem here. There is a way to do it Teena, but it can get to be very confusing. ,,,, It requires that you "Fake" or "Forge" your list address in place of your own. The real problem will come when you DO want to send a private email and forget to change your address back to your real one.,,,, and I guarantee, you WILL forget. There is two places in your mail account that can be changed: 1. Tools / Accounts / Mail tab / Mail account Name / Properties / General tab / ,,,,,, under "User Information" / Name: What ever is entered here is what will appear in the "From: " field 2. Tools / Accounts / Mail tab / Mail account Name / Properties / General tab / ,,,,,, under "User Information" / E-Mail Address: What ever is entered here is what will appear in the header as the sender. If you enter [email protected] (where xxxxxxx is the name of your list) into # 1 above, then your list address will show up in the "From" field, but your real address will still be in the header. If you enter [email protected] (where xxxxxxx is the name of your list) into # 2 above, then this is what will show in the header as the sender. Put your real name (not address) in # 1 & [email protected] (where xxxxxxx is the name of your list) in # 2 and you are covered ,,,, real address is hidden. ,,, also do not fill in your "Reply To: " option. ________________ Another way to do it and may be less confusing is to set up another Account for your list ,,, then all you have to do is switch your "Default" account back and forth. First, go into the Properties for your real account and record all the information for every Tab ,,, you will also need your User name & Password ,,,, this done: Tools / Accounts / Mail tab / Add ,,,, fill in the blanks identical to your current account except for your e-mail address ,, use: [email protected] (where xxxxxxx is the name of your list) . ,,, also under the General Tab , do not select the "Include this account when receiving mail or synch'ing" Once this is working, just switch to the list account (make it the Default) BEFORE you even start to answer any list mail. Take note that RW may very well frown on the above course of action as wide spread use of it will increase the load on their servers. It would also help to set up a "Signature" like one of mine below. Hello All, Please forgive this computer rookie. I would so greatly appreciate some help! Is there a way for me to block (delete, erase) my personal e-mail address in the "from" box when I send outgoing mail? Just like hitting the delete key. I'd also check with your ISP and see if they allow you to do mail rules. I use OE filters to remove repetitive spammers -- I don't have the time to setup a filter or block the domain of every spammer so I only do those that seem to hit my mail box more than once. I really use the filters to get rid of the porn spam. This does seem to work well -- I have found that so long as they use a consistent fake email address, OE does a good job of catching these emails and deleting them off my server (before they even get to my mail box!). Best Wishes, Carol Hepburn [email protected] Phoenix, AZ USA
E-mail rules are on your own computer , have nothing to do with ISP's Rules are not applied till they are downloaded/ Putting a block on the sender also prevents you from having to deal with certain messages , too many rules will slow down your e-mail prg too Dan ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dennis Duffner" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, January 18, 2001 4:04 PM Subject: Re: [OE] different reply address in email than the from address > Just like hitting the delete key. In the first place Jeen, spammers never use their correct user name and rarely their correct domain name. This makes filters and blocked senders mostly ineffective, although they will catch a few. I have over 300 blocked domains and I still receive ~15 spams for every one caught. If you can read headers you will see that the domain name (name after the @ ) almost never matches the domain name that the msg. was received from, another thing that muddies the water is that your address domain name may not be the same as your SMTP (out going mail) server ,,,, my address domain is "galvestonbay.net" but my mail is sent by "alphainternet.net". Also, if you will look in the body of a spam msg. you will almost always find another way to get in touch with them should you fall for it, usually a Phone # or Fax ,,, this tells you their e-mail address is a fake. As far as faking an address, it is VERY easy to do and is in fact a very useful tool for all of us (as well as dangerous) ,,,, EXP.'s: 1. I sub.ed my brother in AL to two mailing lists without his knowledge. I could also unsub him and you from this list if I choose to (which I don't) <g> Its' as simple as going into your mail account and substituting your address with another address ,,, compose a msg. ,,, send it ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, that's all there is to it.
