Thank you Bob, The error was on my part when I composed the e-mail. Sorry... What I turned off (unchecked) was "Automatically put people I reply to in my address book." Correction here V.K. ,,,, I suggested you turn off "Auto. add sender to address book" NOT the "Automatically complete e-mail addresses when composing" feature. Don't know what others advised. The mind of the sender. That's what I'm curious about. I just can't figure out what kind of pleasure one gets creating all this havoc. There must be a lot of time and effort that goes into it. Hi all, Just want to let you know about a benign virus that seems to be spreading through RootsWeb's genealogy mailing lists. I host several mail lists for locations in Ireland and Scotland and this past week have had 5 subscribers try to post an attachment/virus to the mail list. As admin, those emails come to my mail box! I notified each of them and they are getting their computers clean as we speak. The offending attachment is added to normal emails: >Take a look at the attachment The above text is placed on the bottom of your outgoing email -- the sender is unaware that they are sending an attachment. The attachment is called image.pif, fun.pif, or pics.zip.scr I checked with McAfee and Symantec and neither have this virus listed in their library. However, all the listmembers say they have gotten the email/virus from a friend. They of course opened the attachment. Just thought I would pass this along as it seems to be spreading this week! Best Wishes, Carol Hepburn [email protected] Phoenix, AZ USA
Thank you to everyone who took the time to answer my question, (both on-list and off-list). Everyone suggested that I uncheck the "Automatically complete e-mail addresses when composing", which I have now done. I guess it was just laziness that I kept it that way. <g> I think it is very interesting how a virus works, but maybe even more interesting would be how the mind of the sender works. Thanks again, Kaylene
ABSOLUTELY, as already advised, turn off that Auto. add to address book. It is too easy to add them when you want to. The other question: With some virus' you can, with some you cannot. With this new virus, "W32/[email protected]" , you can, the sender is in fact the true sender. The one thing to watch out for is that it uses virus names for older virus', which can fool you into thinking you are dealing with a totally different virus. With the true SNOW-WHITE virus, you cannot determine who sent it, the only true fact you can find out is the domain name of the person who sent it. With the Happy99 virus, you cannot determine who sent it, the only true fact you can find out is the domain name of the person who sent it. This virus extracts an address from the infected comp.'s address book puts it into the "From" field of a new msg. with the virus file attached, extracts another address from the address book, puts it into the "To" field ,, then sends it. Many, many innocent people have been accused of being infected when they were not. SO ,,,,, be careful when telling someone they are infected, they just might not be. ALWAYS get a positive ID on the suspect virus and know its' characteristics before sending out a "You are infected" msg. My own comment would be to stop automatic additions to your address book and the hahaha address won't be added. I manually add addresses to my address book, it saves having to clean it out, and prevents what is occurring with the hahaha address (although that really shouldn't end up there if you have not replied to it). Go to Tools/Options/Send in your main menu of OE and uncheck the addition of addresses replied to. Elaine ----- Original Message ----- From: "V. K. I recently upgraded to WinME, and upgraded McAfee virus scan to version 5.1. Everything is enabled, except for e-mail, even after using set-up wizard. How do I get e-mail enable and scanning? Thanks, Jen
Is there a way to determine who is sending a virus to my e-mail address? (I am running Windows 98 and OE5.) It goes in cycles, but sometimes I will get two or three a day and then go for a couple of weeks and not get any. These always have the Snow White subject line. Yesterday, about noon, I picked up my e-mail and there were three emails. Two from a RootsWeb Digest and the third was Snow White. Luckily my anti virus program (Norton) stops everything and asks what I want to do with the silly thing, so I just delete the virus attachment. The e-mail is always the same, but it will have different 'return path' addresses listed. But the scary part is when I clean out my address book (which is usually once a month or so) there is the 'hahaha' address listed. Any thoughts (ideas? comments?) appreciated. Kaylene
Hi, my OE 5 keeps freezing up. I installed a new AV program the other day, called AVG, and I wondered whether anyone else has the same problem. Could the two be related, as OE never froze up before. It always seems to happen when I try to go from the Inbox to one of two Inbox subfolders. Is there any way to check out what is causing this? Bob, You wrote: "have you tried printing out a msg. direct from OE ?? " Of course. That's the problem. That's when I get the Header & Footer, which I want to get rid of. In order to NOT get the Header & Footer, the only method I can find is to Save to and print from my Word Processor - a slight nuisance.
