    3. I'd be most grateful. I was just waiting until the weekend to call and go through the nightmare of contacting HP tech services. First of all, I am not having any trouble with my old HP computer (which I am using at the moment). It is just very slooooooooooow compared to the other one. The computer is a HPXP788 AMD 1 GHZ, 128MB (upgraded - but I can't remember to what) 60 GB The OS is ME The modem is: Conexant SoftK56 Data, Fax, PCI Modem I have both IE and Netscape browsers and OE, Netscape, Eudora & Pegasus email programs installed - none of any of these worked. I could get connected to my ISP (a local company), but when I tried to view a web page, I got an error "cannot be displayed" message. When I tried to access my email (from any of the four email programs) I got a Popserver3 message - can't remember what it was. I went through hours of trying to get it to work with the tech people at my ISP, nothing worked. Now, I can't even get through to my ISP. When I click on the ISP icon it brings up the dialing window. When I click on that it immediately goes to a blue screen that has "Error OE: 0028:0000DD02". Then when I hit a key, the dialing window comes up and it appears to be dialing, but there is no sound coming from the modem. That's about it :-) Karima ----- Original Message ----- From: "Robert Hays" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, June 21, 2001 1:08 AM Subject: Re: [OE] Cannot browse any pages > Should we take on your problem while we are at it ???? > If so, what OS and mail client on that sick computer and what happens when you try to check for mail. > What kind of dial up do you use: (for both machines) > 1. 3. Should we take on your problem while we are at it ???? If so, what OS and mail client on that sick computer and what happens when you try to check for mail. What kind of dial up do you use: (for both machines) 1. Modem 2. DSL or any other direct connect method. 3. 1. In IE click on Help / About ,,,, If you do not have 128 bit cipher strength, it will need to be installed ,,, you cannot access secured web sites without it.,,,,, http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q261/3/28.ASP 2. Click on Start / Find / Files or Folders ,,, search your C drive for Hosts (no extension & not Hosts.sam, which is a sample file) ,,, If you find one, Rename it, reboot and try again. ,,,, http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q219/8/43.ASP 3. Check the Winsock.dll, Wsock32.dll, and Wsock.vxd Files Check for multiple instances of the Wsock32.dll, Winsock.dll, and Wsock.vxd files. Also check the dates and versions of these files. Rename any file that is not in the appropriate folder (Wsock32.dll and Wsock.vxd should be in the Windows\System folder, and Winsock.dll should be in the Windows folder). To check for multiple files, use the following steps: Click Start point to Find, and then click Files or Folders. In the Named box, type the appropriate file name (for example, type "wsock32.dll" (without the quotes), "winsock.dll" (without the quotes), or "wsock.vxd" (without the quotes)), and then click Find Now. NOTE: Be sure to search in the drive where Windows is installed (usually drive C). To rename extra copies of the files that are not of Microsoft origin, right-click the file that was found, click Rename, and change the file extension to .old (for example, rename the Wsock32.dll file to Wsock32.old). NOTE: If you receive an error message that a file by that name already exists, choose another file extension (for example, .zzz). If none of the three checks above improves the problem, we need to know exactly what does happen when an attempt is made to access a web site: Do you get any of the error msg.'s below: 1. Internet Explorer cannot open the Internet site Web address. A connection with the server could not be established. 2. Internet Explorer cannot open the internet site URL: Web site the connection to the server was reset. ************ http://support.microsoft.com/support/ie/ie5/topics/browse/iebrowseemts.asp#iewsock 3. The Page Cannot Be Displayed. 4. The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings. 5. Cannot find server or DNS Error. 6. An internal error occurred in Windows Internet extensions. We need exact details on what actually happens. 3. I don't see a connection between OE and browsing at all. Is the person able to send and receive email via Outlook Express? Failure to access a webpage has always been a problem of my internet service provider. Even now, when using cable, if the cable isn't running properly, then I can't reach the internet. But, the mail system might still be up and running and I can access mail. The reverse also can hold true. 3. Gee, I hope you are not one of those people who work for DSL! Has this person ever been able to browse? Has he tried a different browser? If so, thru trial and error, after many of these errors in set-up and with no help from so-called techs, I had to do a "Factory-restore!" Once done, I went into the help-section, printed up every topic on settings for every possible connection and eventually, was up and running. I then did a user back-up/user-restore disc, should this ever happen again! I found OE to be very finicky and shaky! And I am not computer-literate....I went from webtv to computer! If someone had the smarts to create a set-up software for every system that would input connection settings at the initial set-up, they could make a mint! This is just an idea and good luck! 3. Thats a good answer Bob If this works let us know - I have been compacting ever since we had the auto option , maybe I will turn it off so I am not the next one to learn this the hard way - Another way to loose OE mail is when running scandisk and it asks to fix a crosslink and make a readable file, *say NO* or it will write the file over your folder names and you will think all your mail has been deleted - Dan Genealogy Resources http://www.wvi.com/~wb For Virus/Spam/Firewall/help on win or OE http://www.angelfire.com/or/matney/page1.html All my lists have a website to share data - ask ----- Original Message ----- From: "Robert Hays" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, May 18, 2001 7:08 AM Subject: Re: [OE] folders disappeared > Happens all the time John. > MS OE 5+ has a glitch in it that can and will cause the loss of msg.,s and/or > entire folders. > If you have OE set to compact in the back ground ,,,, turn it off. > > Go to Tools / Options / Maintenance and uncheck the option to compact > folders in the background. >

    1. Re: [OE] folders disappeared
    2. Robert Hays
    3. Happens all the time John. MS OE 5+ has a glitch in it that can and will cause the loss of msg.,s and/or entire folders. If you have OE set to compact in the back ground ,,,, turn it off. Go to Tools / Options / Maintenance and uncheck the option to compact folders in the background. There appears to be a problem wherein when OE tries to access a folder (e.g. to put a newly downloaded message in it) while it is being compacted some messages or the whole folder may be lost. Once you have turned off background compacting, do it regularly (once a week?) by first putting OE in off-line mode (VERY important) and then using File / Folder / Compact All. You may can recover your lost folders by forcing OE to build a new Folders.dbx file. Right click on your Inbox then click on Properties ,,,, click on the path to where your Folders & msg.s are stored and scroll to the right to see the entire path ,,,, record this path. Now, shut down OE ,,,, right click on "Start" then click on "Explore" ,,, navigate to your mail folder in the Path above and find the file Folders.dbx ,,, rename it to Folders.dbx.bob Restart OE ,,, OE will now, search the entire mail folder and build a new Folders.dbx ,,, and hopefully restore the lost folders & msg.'s. ,,,,, NOTE: this will destroy any structuring you may have had ,,, there will be no more sub folders, only a long list of folders + their msg.'s. Sub folders can be restored by Dragging & Dropping. If you do not find the lost folders ,, Shut down OE ,,, go back to the mail folder ,,, delete the new Folders.dbx and rename Folders.dbx.bob back to Folders.dbx ,,,, restart OE and you are right back where you started from, including all sub folders. Good luck & lets hope this does it ,,,, I will be out of town for the next 9 days. 3. Dan, Obviously you know a great deal more about computers than I. Perhaps you will kindly help me with my education. Frankly, I don't know precisely what happens when a hard disk is partitioned or when a floppy disk is formatted. When you say: "make the new store + say to another partition", I have to ask: how do I determine what partition I'm in, how to go to another ? When you say "move your mail from C drive", I ask: to another drive ? When I changed the store location, I didn't see an opportunity to "tell it to move the messages". Where is that ? 3. I changed the location of my saved emails to C:\MyEmails and, indeed, all my mail came to the new location. I see that it is a cut&paste operation, not a copy&paste. So, I suppose I can now delete the stupid {2DAA67C0-D0FE-11D4-A79C-00010228D28B} folder. Now, it is a tad-bit easier for me to back-up my databases, correspondence, and emails by copy&paste C:\MyFiles and C:\MyEmails to a zip disk. Thanks much Bob Hayes. 3. My emails are located at: C:\Windows\Application Data\Identities\{2DAA67C0-D0FE-11D4-A79C-00010228D28B}\ Microsoft\Outlook Express\Deleted Items.dbx, etc. I am the only user, no network, one ISP account, one email program. Questions: 1. Why in the world name a file folder: {2DAA67C0-D0FE-11D4-A79C-00010228D28B} ? 2. Couldn't I simplify things by relocating the emails directly on the hard drive, say as: C:\My emails\ Deleted Items.dbx, etc. And indicate the path at: Tools Options Maintenance Store Folder Sincerely, Keith [email protected] Anne Arundel Co., Md.

    3. Hold up on this You can do 2 things here . when you have made the new store + say to another partition first let it move your mail from C drive, then do it again to make a new store , make a new folder first , then when you click change store , and the new folder tell it to move the messages Choose move and it will move them, then you can have you megs back on C drive Another thing you can do is the Out look express folder , you can simply drag and drop the whole store on to the other partion and choose=change store, locate it , and say use messages in the new store , this will leave the other store in place and you are working on a new location You can have more than one store and move around . I have 4 also 4 e-mail address and 5 IDs , there are all kinds of things you can do for them to share or not to share what each do . Need personal one on one help , write me. 3. Its not in RW, but it is being passe din private via infected members , soon people will learn not to open this one too and another new rash will break out ;( I do have to say this one was a sneaker, it caught lots of people by surprise. In this case they know when they opened the attachment they had a virus. What I can figure out is when are we going to learn NOT to OPEN? We are list admin get all the bad stuff in our admin mail, but this time those virus are hitting the members in private mail not the list. Maybe on Yahoogroups, but not RW.
