Well Dan ,,, I personally do not have documented proof, I am going by what Microsoft MVP's (Most Valuable Professional) are saying and advising. These are professional people in the computer industry who are recognized and authorized by Microsoft to answer questions and help troubled users. It is highly possible for you to never have had a problem along these lines as the bug appears to only kick in under a given set of conditions, another thing MS wont admit is set your View to "Group messages by conversation", then try to download about 300 emails and see what happens. ,,,,,, but I am curious to know how you would know if you suddenly lost a hundred stored emails from as many as you have saved. ,,, you don't necessarily lose a whole folder (you can though), but may just lose some or all emails stored in a folder. The problem may also be individual computer specific, so my advice to people who lose folders/msg.'s is to turn off back ground compacting, this at least will eliminate that possibility as the cause. If you have a better explanation as to why they lose whole folders or msg.'s without any error msg., we would all very much like to hear it, and those who prefer your remedy is certainly free to use it. I am a little surprised that you would believe Microsoft would tell you the truth about it. No, the msg.'s are not deleted, they are still there but in a corrupt file which cannot be read by OE, which is why they can usually be recovered by rebuilding the Folders.dbx file which contains info. on every folder and msg. I have included below, from some of the MS-MVP's on this subject, condensed excerpts of answers to people who have lost msg.'s or folders . Bob Hays PS: I am having mail server problems (last 4 days) sometimes I receive mail sometimes not (mostly not), same thing with sending. Am trying to keep up by reading the archives and repeated sends. _________________________________ **************************** 4/21/2001 Hello XXXXXX, There have been reports of McAfee's email scan and auto-update facilities corrupting Outlook Express's data folders (*.dbx) causing massive loss of email, particularly the inbox folder - and causing the disappearance of other local folders. Frank Saunders MS-MVP IE/OE Compacting in the background has been correlated to data loss. If OE tries to access and add to a folder that is being compacted, data loss may occur. If a user closes OE while compacting is in progress and then notices that Msimn is still running and does an End Task on it, data loss will probably occur. Go to Tools | Options | Maintenance and turn off compacting in the background. The periodically (say once a week) click Tools | Work offline (or double click Working Online on the Status Bar). OH-BOY ,,, now we are in trouble. I would not restore previous version just yet ,,, I did it once right after installing ver. 5.5 and it took me all the way back to ver. 4.7 ,,,, a real mess, but may have to try reinstalling V 5.5 over the top of itself. Have you tried uninstalling the program that started all this?? an uninstall MAY restore previous settings and/or files. Check out all the support articles below and see if any of them fits. ,,, if all this fails, Disable ALL third party programs and your antivirus and see if things improve. Space conservation. What you delete from the mail program's deleted items folder does *not* really disappear and is creating bloat on the computer. I manually compact every night after permanently deleting the deleted items in OE 5.50. I have never had a problem. I do do it in offline mode or it usually will not finish compacting all folders. I rarely allow any automatic-anything on my computer. I have nothing "scheduled" and manually perform all maintenance. That way I know nothing is going to kick in when I am doing something that might cause overkill on the PC. I also check every evening before signing off to see if there is an AV update. Generally I receive an update before receiving an email notice of update from the AV vendor. I have found that Win98 does not like multiple tasks and manually performing maintenance and updates works for me. If you are talking about "Fields" in your address book, I don't think so. There is nothing about "Macros" in the OE Help files. When you consider the number of different fields under each tab, times the number of people in your address book, it would take a full blown program to handle all that. One thing you could do though is to use an un-used field (if there is one) under the field of interest for an Update entry, manually entered like so: [Updated]: 6/24/2001 If there are no un-used fields, then select another tab that does have an un-used field and use that or you could use the "Other" tab and maintain entries in the "Notes" window like so: Home address updated: 3/4/01 Home Phone updated: 5/10/00 Cell Phone updated: 6/24/01 ETC., ETC. Even if you could use a "Key stroke" you would still have to select the individual, go to their properties and select the correct field ,,,,, by the time you get this far, just go ahead and enter the update info. manually. Hope this helps you set up what you need. Bob I appreciate your help on this one. 1. Yes it does have 128 bit cipher strength 2. It had a file called hosts, we renamed it and rebooted but to no avail. 3. There was not any wsock32.dll or winsock32.dll on his machine at all but there was a wsock.vxd in his windows\system directory. modified - 23.4.99, created - 22.3.2001 version 4.10.98 windows socket driver I presume the best thing to do is send him a copy of my wsock32.dll assuming it is the same version. How will I know if it is going to be the right version if he doesn't have a copy himself. Am I right in thinking he will need to have regsvr32.exe to open it with to enable him register it first. Do you think this is the root of the problem. Sending him your copy of wsock32.dll would be the simplest thing to do ,,, it is also small enough to put on a floppy (40kb) and yes, it should be properly registered ,,,,,,,, this file is needed to properly resolve DNS address'. Do not worry about winsock32.dll, it apparently is not needed ,,,,, I don't have one either <g> BTW: wsock32.dll is the file replaced by the W32/[email protected] virus (among other virus') Lets see what happens when this file is replaced and registered.. Fingers crossed. We have a problem here, such as: 1. I am totally unfamiliar with Windows ME 2. You have too many of the same function type programs installed and all competing against one another, plus I may could help with IE & OE but all other browsers and mail clients are beyond me. Considering your problems with this computer, you really need to decide which mail client you prefer to use and get rid of the others then concentrate on getting that combination of browser + mail working before adding anything else. I did come up with a little bit of info, that MAY fit your situation: ********************* Err Msg: A Fatal Exception 0E Has Occurred at 0028:<XXXXXXXX> -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The information in this article applies to: Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition Microsoft Windows 98 Microsoft Windows 95 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry. Before you edit the registry, make sure you understand how to restore it if a problem occurs. For information about how to do this, view the "Restoring the Registry" Help topic in Regedit.exe or the "Restoring a Registry Key" Help topic in Regedt32.exe. SYMPTOMS After you install Windows, you may receive the following error message when Windows starts: A Fatal Exception 0E has occurred at 0028:XXXXXXXX in VXD SYMEvent(02)+XXXXXXXX. CAUSE This behavior can occur if an older version of a Symantec program (such as Norton AntiVirus) is installed. (snip) ******************** I would suggest you go ahead and contact HP tech services for now. If you get to the point where we can deal with only IE & OE perhaps we can help. It is much nicer to be able to download into a mail program if Hotmail permits that. Yahoo definitely works with my Outlook Express mail program. That way it filters into the appropriate folders. I don't need to be bothered with going to the Yahoo website to do anything but delete messages in the trash bin at the end of the day. And all my mail is in one place. Yes, I download Yahoo mail to Outlook Express. Full instructions are at the yahoo website. I remember that it didn't require any effort and they were pretty good instructions. I also send from OE using my Yahoo address as my default address (that's because my cable company has not been that great about email delivery). I only go to Yahoo at the end of the computer-day where I empty the deleted items from the trash folder since I don't want to worry about exceeding the mail capacity. I download a lot of mail and the free mailbox offers enough space. I rarely have exceeded 60% of the capacity. As soon as the mail is downloaded to OE it is automatically sent to trash at the yahoo website. I don't know anything about Hotmail.
