I run Windows ME and have noticed that the number of Files scanned by my AV keep increasing in number. I notice a lot of *.tmp and temporary Internet files with a zero size. Bob, Your question regarding my Prodigy version rattled my memory a little bit. My problems MAY have begun after I downloaded the Prodigy Version 5 some time in the past couple of months. Then again, my many struggles may have caused a corruption in my memory! I am running Prodigy Version 5 and I/E Version 5.5.4522.1800IS - if that helps any. Incidentally, I have had no problems over the last couple of days since I deleted my desktop shortcuts for O/E and Prodigy. I created a new shortcut for Prodigy, but the new shortcut I created for O/E was as bad as the one I deleted. Hence, I am using the Prodigy shortcut and accessing my e-mail through there. Thanks for all of your assistance. Jess McGuire _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com
Jess ,,,, check your version of Prodigy and see if it is ver. 5 . If it is there is a patch available to fix your problem. Please let me know as I have several helpers standing by to help with this problem. To find the ver. #, on the prodigy upper most Tool bar click on Help / About ,,, the ver. # should be there somewhere. Hello List, First of all, i believe an apology is in order. I am sorry I have not responded to my earlier call for help sooner. Unfortunately, business matters required my attention. I finally "fixed" my problems with O/E and Prodigy Internet. I deleted all of the short cuts that I had on my desktop for them, and reloaded new ones. This did the trick for my Prodigy connection, but did not work for the direct shortcut to O/E. But I can live with accessing it through the Prodigy homepage. As I read Robert Hays' advice on correcting the problem in a perhaps more permanent manner, I was "scared off" by the reg.edit instructions which said that I could possibly (read take it to the bank it will happen!) mess things up by tampering with it. Thus my attempt to utilize a "safer" fix! When it comes to program problems, I tend to break out the duct tape rather than the cutting torch and welder! I am saving the instructions that Robert so kindly sent in case I have further problems. Thank you, for your assistance. And, again, please forgive my late response. Accounts Properties uncheck the (( Include this when downloading)) when you merge accounts You can have all the Identities you want, also accounts , there is a way to separate them. If you add separate e-mail address use (accounts) and follow the prompts, when you are done you will have separate mail storage, do not panic you did not loose your mail, just go to file/switch identifies / and fill out the blanks and you can switch back and fourth all you want an to keep the messages in their own mail folders separate from each other. If you need more detailed help ask in private. I never use the address book, I keep it turned off so I do not remember if you can, I think it is all one thing on that part and is also shared with your label and word processor. Hi Blake ,,, I don't really know about Outlook but I would bet it has the ability to set up two Identities, if it does, this would be the way to go rather than two different mail clients. When two Identities are set up they are the same as two different mail clients and each has its' own folders & address book. Check under File (upper top left) for some mention of "Identities" ,,, find the one that says "Add New Identity" and follow the bunny trail.,,,,, just be sure you use a different Identity name for both the New Identity & its' Address book than the name you are using now. I have my Outlook set to add my signature when I reply or forward a message. It does this with messages received in Plain Text, but not messages received in HTML format. Can anyone explain how to fix this? Blake M. Stough STAUCH, LENHART, and AMREV-CAMP-SECURITY List Administrator Researching Stough-Stauch-Stouch families originating in York Co., PA
I have just began to use Outlook 2000, and would like to add an email address for my wife as well. We do not want to share address books. Can I use Outlook and she use Outlook Express? I set it up like this, but the address books are shared by each program. When she was on Outlook with me under her own address, her mail was mixed with mine when it was downloaded. This is why I thought she should use Outlook Express. Blake M. Stough STAUCH, LENHART, and AMREV-CAMP-SECURITY List Administrator Researching Stough-Stauch-Stouch families originating in York Co., PA
Hi Jess ,,,, you may not have Prodigy ver. 5 but this is a good place to start. Bob Hays _________________________________ OLEXP: Problems Using Outlook Express and Prodigy Version 5 Software -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The information in this article applies to: Microsoft Outlook Express versions 5.01, 5.5 for Windows 98 Microsoft Outlook Express versions 5.01, 5.5 for Windows 98 Second Edition -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry. Before you edit the registry, make sure you understand how to restore it if a problem occurs. For information about how to do this, view the "Restoring the Registry" Help topic in Regedit.exe or the "Restoring a Registry Key" Help topic in Regedt32.exe. SYMPTOMS After you install the Prodigy version 5 software, or any other Internet service provider (ISP), you may experience the following e-mail related symptoms: The Page by E-mail and Link by E-mail commands under the Send command on the File menu in Microsoft Internet Explorer may not work. The Read Mail, New Message, Send a Link, and Send Page commands under the Mail button in Internet Explorer may not work. When you try to use any of the preceding commands, your pointer may become an hourglass (indicating your computer is busy), but nothing may happen and you may not receive an error message. CAUSE This issue occurs because the Prodigy software, or any other ISP, adds an e-mail client key to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER and/or the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE branches in the registry that does not contain any values. When you use a command listed earlier in this article, Outlook Express checks this registry key, but does not find information about an e-mail program to start, and generates the symptoms listed earlier. RESOLUTION WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk. For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys and Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT or Windows 2000, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD). To resolve this issue, use either of the following methods: Method 1 Use Registry Editor to view the following registry key, and then modify the value of the Default value to "Outlook Express" (without quotation marks): HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail In this same registry key, modify the value of the DLLPath value to "C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\MSOE.DLL" (without quotation marks), and then restart your computer. Repeat the above steps for also modifying the Default value of: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail Method 2 Use Registry Editor to delete the Mail folder in the following registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Clients\ -and- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail IMPORTANT: The next time you connect to Prodigy, or any other ISP, and check e-mail by using the ISP's software, the preceding registry key is recreated and the issue may resume. However, if you connect with Prodigy, or other ISP's, and then use Outlook Express as your primary e-mail client, the key is not recreated. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jess McGuire" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, July 06, 2001 2:28 PM Subject: [OE] A Real Mess > > Hello Everyone. > > I am having major problems with O/E. Hello Everyone. I am having major problems with O/E. For some reason it seems to be having a "war" with my Prodigy Internet. They no longer want to work together in peace! Currently, I can not send out any mail from O/E. When I try to send a message, the send/receive screen will lock up. I have to use Con/Alt/Del and choose End Task to get it to unlock. Of course I am booted out of O/E. To fix this problem I have performed the following steps: Examined every possible cure listed in O/E Help file - Tried all possible fixes listed under Prodigy Help file - Tried deleting the old copy and downloading a new copy of O/E - Checked, double checked, and triple checked to ensure that all of my settings are correct (they are) - Assuming that I have a corrupted Outbox, I have made several attempts to delete it - with no success. When I went to START - FIND - outbox.mbx no such animal found. System info: Compaq Presario; 5000 Series; 700 Mhz Pent III; 128 Meg RAM; 20 Gig Hard Drive. I have McAfee A/V; Zone Alarm Firewall; AdAware; Ad Subtract. I have enabled Outlook Express to bypass the Ad Subtract Filtering. McAfee last updated last night. Due to the number of newsgroups I am in, I A/V scan daily, as well as Defrag daily. I have had ongoing problems with O/E over the last 9 months- even before I added Ad Aware, Zone Alarm, and Ad Subtract. Would I be better off to switch to Netscape? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thank You In Advance. SYMPTOMS When you double-click an Internet shortcut in an Outlook Express e-mail message, your Web browser may not start or connect to the Web page. CAUSE This behavior can occur for one of the following reasons: A short file name (standard 8.3 naming) is used for the program name associated with Internet shortcuts. Internet Explorer is not currently your default Internet browser, and the browser that was formerly the default is no longer installed. RESOLUTION RESOLVING THE FIRST CAUSE Correct your file association: To resolve the first issue, change the name of the program associated with Internet shortcuts to the long file name of your Web browser. To do so, follow these steps: If you have Windows 9x/NT installed: On the Start menu, point to Programs, and then click either Windows Explorer or Windows NT Explorer. On the View menu, click Folder Options. Click File Types. In the Registered File Types box, click URL:File Transfer Protocol, and then click Edit. In the Actions box, click Open, and then click Edit. The Application Used To Perform Action box may display the path to your Web browser as a short file name. Type the path to your Web browser using the full long file name. For example, change: c:\progra~1\intern~1\iexplore.exe - to - "c:\program files\internet explorer\iexplore.exe" including the quotation marks. Click OK, and then click Close. Repeat steps 4-7 for the following registered file types: URL:Gopher Protocol URL:Hypertext Transfer Protocol URL:Hypertext Transfer protocol with Privacy To close the Folder Options dialogue box, click Close. NOTE: If you follow these steps, you may receive the following prompt when Internet Explorer starts: Internet Explorer is not currently your default browser. Would you like to make it your default browser? If you click Yes, the issue may reoccur. If you have Windows 2000 installed: On the Start menu, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Windows Explorer. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options. Click the File Types tab. In the Registered File Types box, click URL:File Transfer Protocol, and then click Advanced. In the Actions box, click Open, and then click Advanced. The Application Used To Perform Action box may display the path to your Web browser as a short file name or an incorrect path. Type the path to your Web browser using the full long file name. For example, change: c:\progra~1\intern~1\iexplore.exe to: c:\program files\internet explorer\iexplore.exe including the quotation marks. Click OK, and then click Close. Repeat steps 4-7 for the following registered file types: URL:Gopher Protocol URL:Hypertext Transfer Protocol URL:Hypertext Transfer protocol with Privacy URL:Internet Shortcut To close the Folder Options dialogue box, click Close. NOTE: If you follow these steps, you may receive the following prompt when Internet Explorer starts: Internet Explorer is not currently your default browser. Would you like to make it your default browser? If you click Yes, the issue may reoccur. RESOLVING THE SECOND CAUSE Set Internet Explorer As the Default Browser To resolve the second cause, and to set Internet Explorer to be the default Internet Browser, follow these steps: On the Start menu, point to Settings, and click Control Panel. Double click the Internet or Internet Options icon, and click Programs. Ensure that Internet Explorer should check to see if it is the default is selected, click Apply, and then click OK. Open internet Explorer. When you are prompted with Internet Explorer is not currently your default browser. Do you wish to make it the default? click Yes. Links in e-mail messages should then open Internet Explorer. Outlook Express 5 Only NOTE: This section does not apply to Windows 2000. This issue is also resolved for Outlook Express 5 by using the Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 Repair utility. To run the Internet Explorer 5 Repair utility: Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add/Remove Programs. In the list of installed programs, double-click Internet Explorer 5 and Internet Tools. Click Repair Internet Explorer. When the process is finished, restart the computer. I am trying to restore my OE screen like it was before the "corrupt" . Where can I find the feature that shows how many messages are downloading and how many are in my OE? How many in my sent, etc...my new OE screen just has a slide bar on the bottom... And I remember the discussion on setting up the correct letters in the line...if it all fits the screen..something to that effect...I am stressed and can't think....of where I go to make sure my configurations are correct...
