He was the 3rd Sheriff of Wasco County, Oregon at The Dalles, Oregon in 1855. I show him as a medical doctor and a native of Iowa. He first came to Oregon in 1852 as one of the first doctors in the county. He was appointed to Justice of the Peace after leaving the Sheriff's office and returned to the Portland, Oregon area in late 1856. Dr. Shaug lived in the Chenowith area in The Dalles and operated a ferry on the Deschutes River. He later farmed near the mouth of Five-Mile Creek in The Dalles. Land claim lists his wife as Ruth, whom he supposedly married in 1841 in Virginia. He had a son Edward born 1857 in Oregon and another son born in 1852. I also show him with daughters Louisa 1844, Wilda 1848, Elvira 1855 and a daughter born in 1859 according to the 1860 Oregon Census of Washington County at Hillsboro. My information indicates he was born circa 1823 in Ohio. This Charles Shaug shows a wife Mary J. born 1828 in Illinois, with daughter Mary born 1849 in Iowa, Caroline born 1852 in Oregon, Ione born 1859 in Oregon. He was the first Noble Grand of the Lodge in 1856. A street called Shaug Way was named after him.
