This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Pierce, Hiatt Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/5cB.2ACI/728.1.1 Message Board Post: Hi, Gerald The shooting took place on 28 Jul 1887 in Washington County, Oregon. The Joseph Pierce who was shot was age 55 in 1880. You can find him living in Washington County Oregon here: OR 1880 Census Washington County, Forest Grove Precinct ED 128, Page 345A, Page 25, Ancestry Image 16/22 Dwelling 227, Family 228 Roll T9_1084 15 Jun 1880 The man who admitted shooting him was Isaac Hiatt, age 44 in 1880. You can find him here with his wife, Hannah and 2 children: OR 1880 Census, Union County, Cove Precinct ED 117, Page 163A, Page 33, Ancestry Image 12/14 Dwelling 110, Family 119 18 Jun 1880 I think, but am not sure, that his wife was Hannah P Reese, whom an Isaac Hiatt married on 14 Apr 1874 in Henry County, Indiana. Do you have access to Ancestry? If so, do a search on Pierce and/or Hiatt in the newspaper database and you will find a number of articles on the shooting here: All in the Morning Oregonian (published in Portland): 28 Jul 1886 29 Jul 1886 31 Jul 1886 18 Dec 1886 28 Jan 1887 2 Apr 1887 Unfortunately, they do not give a lot of genealogical information but mostly re-hash the boundary dispute that preceded the shooting. The Hannah P Hiatt who writes defending Isaac is Isaac's wife; the M A Pearce who writes defending Joseph is Joseph O Pierce's widow. Her maiden name is Martha "Mattie" A Hiatt. You can see her living in her family in 1880 before she marries Joseph Pierce in the census above, right next door to Joseph. Joseph can also be found in the 1870 (in this census the last name is mispelled Peirce and is indexed by Ancestry this way) and possibly the 1860 census living in Washington County, Oregon. If the entry in 1860 is for him, his wife's name is Anna. In the other censuses I found him in (1870 and 1880) there is no wife listed. It seems to me that we probably don't have the same people, but let me know what you think.
I have some friends who live in Cove, Or. I have been there. It is a little way from La Grande, Or. in Union Co.Or. I want to add something here. there are many LDS people there and some went there in the settling of area. Could also it be that these people were LDS???? That might get to be a help in this. Do you have where they died and are buried?
