I'm a historian in Bellingham, WA, writing the biography of James Alexander Patterson. In 1880, he was 68 and living with the B.H. Catching household in Forest Grove. It is not known when he died or where, but the family says that he was murdered in a hold-up in the 1880's in Oregon.
