Hi: I have two pictures, which I think are from about 1920, that were probably taken in Washington County, Oregon. One is a class picture, and one is a picture of some of the same children with a sign that reads "Knights of The Towers". The following persons are identified in the photo: Lyle Hurt, Nathen Curth, Darrell Frewing, Crest Sniter,Herbert Berlin, Lawrence Parks, Eric Straum, Gordon Campbell, Malcolmb Campbell,Earl Myers, Arthur Starks, Frederick Parks, Mrs. Yong/Young, Lloyd Yong/Young, Kenneth Shire. Does anyone know what the Knights of The Towers was? Mary
Could be a branch of the Free Masons Mary. I have a photo of Knights of Piathis (sp) at http://www.rootsweb.com/~arfrankl/Lodge/knights.htm I also would like to add your photograph to a layout for Washington County so visitors can see your old photographs. I just love to see old things on genealogy pages.....give us a personal feel for how they lived. I am working on a history of that era when small steam boats came up the Tualatin River to the town of Forest Grove. It is interesting because one can barely get a rowboat up that river now. All of this will end up on the County webpage. Have a good day all. I am looking for info on my grampa William Cates. they lived in Tigard, Ore from about 1930 till 1960's. Their kids were Armel, Warren, Jack, Flossie and Barbara Jean. Jack Cates went into the army and it lists Washington Co. Ore is where he was from. I also wondered if they had a newspaper in 1950 as Jack W. Cates was wounded and rec'd medals for this and their was a big write up in a paper but a friend said she didn't see it in Portland's paper so maybe if Tigard had a paper it was there. Any info or knowledge of this family would be appreciated linda cates
hi all i will be switching over to phantomchsr@juno.com. april
I was wondering if anyone knew the name of papers in Tigard, Washington Co in the 1950's. My dad Jack Willis Cates, parents William Everett and Rhoda Duckett Cates. was in the army. In about September of 1950 he was wounded in the Korean War, he saved another tank and got medals for it, we had copies of it from the paper but it is not in the two Portland papers(a very kind soul looked for me) so I thought perhaps there was a newspaper for Tigard. I know he went into the service from Wash. Co. and his parents lived in Tigard for many years. Any ideas on if there was a paper for that area would be helpful to me. linda
I think it is wonderful that so many took my "just a hint "post and put it to good use, and for those of you that decided to volunteer with no help from me... good for you!!! I have had so much feedback on that post that I decided to do a PS and add a few more tips on how to volunteer. Hope they help!!! Most counties in the USA have towns that aren't quite ghost towns, but they are so small that most people call them "a place you'll miss if ya blink"... go visit one of those really small towns and see if they have a city hall(you'll be surprised at how many do!) that has really old records that have been forgotten and post them to your county sites... Also, some of the towns may have been alot larger in the past and still have a post office, and may have postal employee records from way back when... If you have a company in your town that has existed for 50 years or more, see if they have any old records such as dated employee lists that they would like to donate for transcription...(tell them it keeps the company name out there , too, at a county and state level...)Hospitals, Schools, Law firms, any company really, might like to do this as a public service...it shows community commitment and longevity another thing you can do in some places...look for MOM and POP/ Family- type businesses that have been around a long time, or those now gone but remembered and look for old records pertaining to them and do a bio on the owners.... post to the appropriate county( this is one I am working on right now and I think it is turning out to be a great idea...) Find someone from your childhood, that has passed on , someone you respected alot for whatever reason and do an interview with others still living who knew the person also and do a short bio...(I would also remember to pick elderly people that love to remember the past) anyway, that is just a few more ways to volunteer to make your county and state pages 'Pop' with info.... Don't forget... try to read at least one very old obit a week and post it somewhere online...with source, date of publication and location that has copy. good luck to the lists... gloria
http://www.rootsweb.com/~orwashin/index.html Thanks to Peggy R. we now have a huge cemetery transcription on line for Union Cemetery on Cedar Hills Road near Beaverton, OR. It is in two pages and takes awhile to read, and also contains selected gravestone transcriptions........and lots of German folks here, so please check it out. If you have transcriptions for Washington County, please permit us to post them so everyone can read them. Don, admin --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Washington County, Oregon 1900 Census Project Judy Goldmann and Ginger L. Christmas-Beattie are in the process of putting the 1900 Census for Washington County Oregon into a database form. This project is to make reading the information much nicer. What we need are people who have a PC that is IBM compatible or a MAC that can read IBM "Microsoft EXCEL" files. The project will consist of using the forms that Judy has spent many years to fill in and/or the images for a double check on the data. What we will provide is a CD that contains the images in a .pdf or Acrobat file and the form that Ginger has created in EXCEL to fill in the data. We can provide you with this and instructions on how to fill in the data. We are in need of at least 10 helpers for the project. The person who will be the contact is Ginger as she has created the form and knows how it works. Ginger has coordinated the 1900 Census Project in 3 other counties and her methods are working. To view the work please visit http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncwarren/census/1900_census.htm <http://www.rootsweb.com/%7Encwarren/census/1900_census.htm> to view the districts of the 1900 Census. Placing the forms in Acrobat allows anyone to read them, as it is a free download on the Adobe site. Please let Ginger know if you can help. -- Ginger L. The Oregon Historical Society downtown Portland has all the newspapers on microfilm and they can do the research for you for a small fee. Washington County is about 10 miles West of Downtown Portland. The newspaper could be the Oregonian or the Hillsboro Argus. I am not sure if I am writing to the write place if not I am sorry. My mothers cousin Joseph Greene did our family tree and our Gr. Gr. Gr. Grandparents John and Jessie Johnston are buried in the Old Scotch Church Cemetery north of Hillsboro with other family members. My Gr. Gr. Grandmother Elizabeth Johnston was born at Forest Grove Hospital in 1842. Our family was employed by the Hudson Bay Company which is the reason they came to Washington County in the 1840's. I have information on the Johnston, Johnson, Slater and Byrd family's, if you need any of the information I would be happy to provide it. Sincerely Debra Rogers-Bianchi
Hi Don: You might want to list it with some of the names on Somebody's Links, an electronic newsletter designed exactly to return items of significance to family members. For a sample, see: SOMEBODY'S LINKS NEWSLETTER: Genealogical Treasures Found Vol. 4, No. 41, 14 November 2002 Circulation: 17,805+ http://www.petuniapress.com/ (c) 1999-2002 Julia M. Case There's also a message board for Somebody's Links under "Topics" at Rootsweb that is available for free. Plus, you could leave a message on the Surname message board of the family that the album is available. Either direct them to the dealer or have readers contact you for that info. So many of these are being sold on ebay and then broken up, it's really tragic. http://www.rootsweb.com/~orwashin/family.html Success Story: The hand written papers by a Harrison in 1934 were posted at the above URL about a month ago. Last week descendents of Harrison read the papers and family record, and provided enough additional information to convince us they were related. The hand written document has been returned to the family who lives in Troutdale, a town just east of Portland near I-84. Every small victory counts. Don, CC, Washington County. Now I have another potential project, a clasped photo album, fancy, brown leather cover. Inside a date 1888, many photographs, some with names; plus a 1934 penny postcard in very good shape, names from and to legible. Problem is it cost a bundle and I can't afford to buy it for $50.00 just to give it away. If I get my hands on it, I'll scan everything in, add known names, and try to find the family who lost it. I'll get my monthly feel good that way. Any project interest in buying that album? There is no one in it that I know, but from the dress and hairdos............has to be the late 1800s. Photos are in excellent condition. I have no history on the source of the album.....even the store manager doesn't know. I have seen a lot of albums in my time, but nothing even close to as fancy as this one. Don --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). Hi Everyone, Many of you might not be aware that as of October 23, 2002, the 1880 US Census Index, 1881 Canadian and 1881 British Census Indexes are available free at: http://www.familysearch.org These are from the LDS Church which have also had these indexes on CD's for quite some time. Keep checking their website for more as they seem to be adding more to their website all the time. Happy hunting!!!! Bev Reinhardt
