Dear Judy, Thank you for all of the information and insite. I am working on the Moran Cemetery this week and will work on Washington County and Oregon State records also for property records. It is interesting to us to know that buildings in Greenville Township were moved to Banks and why Greenville Township dwindled away. Will also work on locating the books Shelley mentioned. Thank you for your information, help and support. Darwin Saylor San Diego > From: "Judith E. OREGON HISTORIC CEMETERIES ASSOCIATION SPRING MEETING. The Spring meeting of the Oregon Historic Cemeteries Association will be held Saturday, March 27, at the Washington County Museum. Hosted by the Washington County Family History Society, a local genealogical hobby group, the days events will include a tour of three local cemeteries. The Washington County Museum is located on the Rock Creek Campus of PCC, at 17677 NW Springville Road, Portland. This neighborhood is known as Bethany, and was the home of numerous Swiss and German settlers who came in the late 1800s. Saturdays program will offer incite on these emigrants, their churches and cemeteries. Elmer Grossen, lifelong resident ,will give some history of the Bethany Presbyterian church founding. His Church has prepared an updated history, which he will have available. Registration is at 9:30 AM, with program and business in the morning. Bringing our own brown bag lunch is suggested. About 1 PM a tour is scheduled to Bethany Presbyterian Cemetery; The Bethany German Methodist Cemetery, and to West Union Baptist Church Cemetery. Members of the Washington County Family History Society Jo Ann Tannock and Judy Goldmann will serve as Tour Guides. The public is invited and encouraged to come and learn more about a very interesting part of Washington County; a once rural section that has changed dramatically in the past few years. The Oregon Historic Cemeteries, Assn is a statewide non-profit interested in the preservation of records, and promotes the conservation of old cemeteries. Information may be had by calling Carol Surrency at 503-640-4431 or Judy Goldmann at 503-648-9597. ***************** Story submitted by Judy Goldmann 503-648-9597
Dear Darwin: Shelley has given you some good tips. Greenville was a settlement, about three miles south from the present town of Banks; It dwindled away when the railroad route left it high and dry, and Banks was founded by 1902. Some buildings were moved to Banks. In the census Greenville twn refers to the community, the Townships in Oregon were not named in the way of some states. The Census Enumeration Districts were based mostly on voting precincts; grouped and given a name of a settlement, or geographic feature. Dairy Creek was to the north of the Banks area; and South Tualatin was in the southwest corner of Washington County. Many miles apart. There were many episodes of typhoid. The only newspapers extant date back to the early 1890s, and gaps appear in them, stories would give clues about patterns The most likely Cemetery is Banks Union Point; once called Wilkes. No Darlands show up in the available records. Raffety is far to the north and east; does not show any Darland. There are no Darlands on the records of Gales Creek; Hillside; or Almoran Hill, or Oak Knoll Cemeteries, nor Hillsboro Pioneer. IS THERE any family tradition that the Darlands belonged to the Primative Baptist Church? Also; the John Dorland family that lived near North Plains is not a likely close relative. He is buried at Tualatin Plains Presbyterian; his obit Hillsboro Argus 9 Jul 1908 reads: John Dorland, died 2 Jul 1908 at home near Hillsboro; born 14 Mar 1845, Prince Edward County, Ontario, Canada. He married Angeline Jackson [Margaret Angeline Jackson, dau of John B. Jackson] on 27 May 1866. They moved to Canada; then to Washington in 1888; returned to Washington County in 1907. The children are named.... ++++++++ The child Sarah could be buried on the farm where the family lived; or could have be placed in a cemetery with a wooden marker that no longer exists. Home burials were not uncommon, especially when typhoid was a factor. Another practice was that families bought a plot; and thereafter records keeping was up to them; often not kept by a sexton, or similar 'seller' such a church, lodge, town. I ASSUME YOU HAVE ASKED the Moran Cemetery in Spokane for any unmarked Darland graves; not just relied on the readings posted on the internet. I have looked in various sources; and find only the later Darlands in Forest View Cemetery in Forest Grove. Perhaps already mentioned: George Darland 1859-1835; Mary V. Darland 1860-1946, Lot 308, graves 7 and 8, along with some of the Briggs family, their daughter . Also at FV is Lillian Darland, 1871-1946 she is in Lot 521,between Garrison and O. Gordon. Her Obit: Hillsboro Argus 6 Jun 1946 Funeral held Beaverton Bethel Congregational Church; formerly of Hillsboro; died at home of daughter in Beaverton; inter Forest Grove Cemetery. Surv: Dau Mrs. W.L. (Edith) Cady, grd dau: Maxine Cady Barnes; grd son: David Cady. Sisters: Mrs. Mary Hodges, Multnomah; Mrs. Karl Potten, Seaside; Mrs. Nellie Shearer of FG; also bro Clyde and Ernest Campbell, Portland and Earl Campbell, St. Helens. Member OES; American Legion Auxiliary, Hillsboro. Mrs. Darland resided in Hillsboro after the death of her husband Dr. George Darland. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Some of these clues may give ideas of where else to look. Shelley, Thank you so very much! I will convey all of this wonderful information to the family. It would be interesting to find a connections. The 1870 census showed 19 Shearers plus 2 Bridgewater step children listed as Shearers. I would be happy to share their names if it is of interest. They registered at precinct 32 and FG, what ever those meant. They were families number 230 and 79 and both were listed as farmers with some of the children listed as farm workers. Ages ranged from 47 to 1 and places of birth were NC, Ind., Iowa, and Ore. I will save the directions to Dorland Road in hopes of a not to distant visit. There is a Darland Road and Darland Ridge, depending on which map you look at, of Garfield County, WA. where they settled after leaving the Forest Grove area. We have long suspected that they both may have been buried on the farm(s) so will need to convert property lists bearing the family name to property locations. It will be more difficult for GGGma Sarah in that I do not have any property lists for William Hamilton Darland or Darling, but this too can be overcome. I understand your frustrations with disk crashes. I once had a programmer that lost all of my test programs not once, but twice without having them backed up. Since we had both worked on the F16 program I knew that he knew better. After I told him that if there were a third time without a backup there would be funeral shortly there after, we had no more problems. I just finished backing up all of my files late last week. Thanks again. I hope you find the Shearer information interesting and helpful. Your information has been interesting and helpful. Darwin, One last morsel for you or your family historian, in your last email reply, you mentioned name variations and the name Dohrland, it might interest you to know that there is a DORLAND road in Washington county. It is located due North of North Plains, Washington county, Oregon. North plains is located right off U.S. Hwy 26 West (exit 57, I believe), exit the freeway into North Plains (go North after you get off at exit), which will put you on Glencoe Road, Follow Glencoe Road North, which will then come to a fork, left will take you to Pumpkin Ridge, straight north will take you to Shadybrook Road, which a few miles out will turn into Dorland Road. Dorland eventually turns into NW Moreland Road. Check your maps. History in the area tells me that a lot of the local roads and backroads were named after folks who owned farms in those areas. Keep chipping away at this, you'll arrive where you need to be. I know, I chipped enough away at it in my own family tree and as of today, I excitedly stumbled upon the original homestead of my ancestors, thanks to key information about locations and landmarks from a distant cousin! I even found out why I could never locate certain graves or markers for some of these ancestors, come to find that they were buried on the family homestead back in the late 1800's! One last odd tidbit, and don't know if it has any significance, but it is quite ironic to me even now that I think about it, but the folks I met today, that now own and live in my G-G-G-Grandfathers home, their last name is SHEARER. Dick (Richard, I presume) and Kathy Shearer. They are an older couple, maybe late 60's early 70's. Very sweet couple. Anyhow, I don't know that there would be any relation except for last name. They've lived in my g-g-g-grandfathers house for the past 15 years, and the house is located in Park Place, Clackamas County, Oregon; near Oregon City, Oregon. Thought I'd share, anyhow, good luck! Dear Shelley, Wow what a wonderful lot of information. Cousin Pauline is the Bridewater Shearer family historian. I will share what you sent with her and put out a search for the books you recommended. The roots of the family name take on a lot of variation from Darling to Durland with an oomlaut and Dohrland. That this is Dutch country does not suprise me and in fact makes a lot of sense. My aunt and mom say that Gpa Gene talked about a cousin Charlie but the possibility of a different last name spelling had not occurred to me/us and now I wonder if the Darling spelling on the 1880 census was a translation error or a temporary return to the past. Thanks again. More soon. Darwin, I've looked in my family files for a connection to the names you listed and the only thing I did find, which I didn't feel was a match, but will pass along anyhow is, there is a LURANA ELKINS listed in our family tree, born 1823 died 1910, she was married to a STEPHEN SWAIN FULLER born 11/23/1817 died 1893. The other name I found was BEVERLY DARLING, no birth or death info, but she was married to a ROBERT MICHAEL VANDEHEY, born 7/20/1957. The only other connection that I see would be that I am extremely familiar with the area that your family lived in/around. First, The picture I referred to about the creation of Greenville Township is located in the book "Wooden Shoes West". This book covers the entire Vandehey family. They were a very predominate Dutch family in these Washington County, Oregon parts. If you would like to get your hands on a copy of the book, or to even answers some more direct questions reguarding the surrounding areas, I would direct you to the man who wrote the book. He is a distant cousin to my husband's family. He is a priest of a local church here and is the family historian. Father Scott Vandehey 4285 N. W. Visitation Rd. Forest Grove, Oregon 97116 (503)-357-3860 Not only would he be a good source to be in contact with, but he is also the source for his books. I do not have an e-mail address for him, sorry. I do not believe he has one. Second, The Dairy Creek area you referred to also, that area is located due north of Greenville, about 7-10 miles north of U.S. Hwy 26. It should show up on a map due north of Mountaindale. There is a cemetery out there that not too many folks know of, called Raffety or Rafferty Cemetery. There are mostly Johnson's and Thompson's out there. I forgot to mention, I am one of Washington county's cemetery transcribers. I have a few cemeteries locally on file. I am one of the pioneers of taking headstone digitals to get up on the web. So far, I have them saved to a disk after a learned lesson of lost info when your computer crashes! Anyhow, I have on disk, Scotch Church Cemetery (partial), Fern Hill Cemetery (complete), Rafferty Cemetery (Complete), Blooming Cemetery (Partial), Forest View (Partial), & Mt. View (Partial). Other local cemeteries I had, but lost all info and pictures on are: St. Francis Cemetery in Roy, Washington County, Oregon; St. Edward's Cemetery, North plains, Washington County, Oregon; Visitation Cemetery, Verboort, Washington County, Oregon; Cornelius United Methodist Cemetery, Cornelius, Washington County, Oregon; & Fir Lawn Cemetery, Hillsboro, Washington county, Oregon (was really upset by loss of this one, is a really big cemetery and I had it all complete! mausoleum also!) Checked my records of headstone photos and I came up with Darling's and Shearer's. Don't know if there is relation, but it may help, I'll let you decide. All at Forest View Cemetery in Forest Grove, Washington County, Oregon: Alice (1832-1919) & James (1833-1911) Darling (both names on one headstone) Charles Darling (died 1906) Dee Dee (died 1960) & Belle (died 1939) Darling (both names-one headstone) The following are also from Forest View Cemetery. Headstones are located in cemetery headed by Family headstone marker "SHEARER": Carrie Wood (1889-1925) Shearer Jacob H. (1855-1940) Melissa A. (1861-1926) That is all I have so far from this cemetery, I do not have it complete yet. If you would like me to send you photos of the above stones, just let me know and I will e-mail them to you. I'm afraid this is all of the info I have for the time being to pass along to you. If you are going to research this area, I would suggest talking the Fr. Scott Vandehey. You could also try the local funeral homes in the area, mostly Forest Grove, Cornelius, & Hillsboro. To see if they may have some leads for you. Have you tried www.ancestry.com<http://www.ancestry.com/> or www.familysearch.com<http://www.familysearch.com/>? These are two main popular sites I go to when I need to find any info on different families. You will want to check back every so often at these sites as new info is being added daily! It may have taken me a year, but this is how I found my mother's long lost cousin! The other thing would be to go to GOOGLE and type in a general search for the names you would like info on. ie; john+smith, or John+ Smith+Genealogy, etc. adding the plus will make the hits more specific. good luck and don't give up! Darwin, Just a heads up about Greenville Township. You say you found Greenville Road on a map, That essentially was the township and the vacinity surrounding it of Greenville. Hello, I have also been looking for Gladowski or Glodowski as they were Polish names. Also the spellinhg was changed and or misspelled by some family or Clerks or census takers etc. So it is very possible that your's also ended up a variant spelling. Rty any variant's you find or think of as vitals dates and places can verify if same name in most cases. Many Polish people in Ill, Wisc and some other places in midwest. My main focus had been to find all the information I could on the surname “Kalakosky.” After being stumped on the issue for a long time I continued research on other lines in my family. After mildly exhausting those lines, I came full circle back to the Kalakosky name. > > Kalakosky is my father’s name. From my understanding, my father did not get a chance to know his own father and therefore had very little knowledge on the history of the name. My first endeavor was to establish a paper trail. I got a hold of my father’s birth certificate. On his certificate his father is listed as Harold George Kalakosky. The following information is what is on my father’s birth certificate that pertains to Harold George Kalakosky: > > NAME: Harold George Kalakosky > RACE: White > AGE: 43 > ***ESTIMATED DOB: abt. 1910 > BIRTHPLACE: Merrill, Wisconsin > OCCUPATION: Machinist at Gerber Legendary Blades > SPOUSE: Lola Oliver > > My father was born in Oregon, so it makes perfect sense that Harold worked at Gerber, which was located in Oregon. > > Unfortunately, this is where the paper trail ends, but I will share other information I have tried to compile. > > I sent for a birth certificate from Wisconsin for Harold George Kalakosky and received a return letter stating that they had no one on file under that name or possible alternate spellings. Considering he was born about 1910, I thought it possible that his birth record might not be in the state records and is actually somewhere in a local facility like a county courthouse. In Wisconsin, all vital records occurring in 1907 and afterward were supposed to be sent to the state. I figured it was a possibility that his might not have gotten sent, since his birth date was fairly close to 1907. I am planning to take a trip to Merrill in a couple weeks to comb through the archives (as of 18 February 2004). Another possibility is that he was not born in Merrill, or even Wisconsin, even though that’s what the birth certificate says. > > I then sent for an application for a Social Security number that had been applied for by a woman named Lizzie Kalakosky. Hoping that “Kalakosky” was her maiden name, I figured this might shed a little light on the situation. When I received the copy of the application, I learned that Lizzie’s maiden name was actually Achatz. This was verified by her father’s name which was also listed on the application as Achatz. She had listed both Achatz and Kalakosky on the application. “Kalakosky”, I’m assuming, to be her married name. The following is the information on the Social Security number application: > > NAME: Lizzie (Achatz) Kalakosky > SSN: 538-07-6554 > ADDRESS: R1. Box 188, Everett WA. > EMPLOYER: Model Cream Bakery, 3601 Colby Av. Everett WA. > AGE: 48 > DOB: 10 AUG. 1889 > BIRTHPLACE: Auburndale Wisconsin (Merrill WI. was initially written but was scratched out.) > FATHER: George Achatz > MOTHER: Katherin Pontgratz > SEX: Female > COLOR: White > DATE YOU BECAME AN EMPLOYEE: 06 July 1937 > DATE SIGNED: 27 Dec. 1937 > > As you can see, Lizzie wrote that she was born in Auburndale WI, (Merrill was scratched out). I found this to be very significant considering Harold George Kalakosky is also listed as being born in Wisconsin on my father’s birth certificate. After looking at a map, it was even more intriguing to see that Auburndale was very close in local to Merrill, maybe 60 miles or so. Furthermore, additional research shows that both Lizzie and Harold later lived in the Pacific Northwest. According to the dates I have, it is VERY reasonable to assume that Harold was Lizzie’s son, and they both moved from Wisconsin at the same time. If Harold was Lizzie’s son, Lizzie would have been approximately 21 years old when Harold was born. The downside to this is that I have not been able to prove that this is the case without hard copy evidence or validation from a living source. I have no idea who the Kalakosky was that Lizzie was married to and would consider that pricele! > ss information. > > At this point I was left with about one option, to search for phone numbers of living Kalakosky’s and start calling people up. The information I have been able to find has been interesting and confusing as well. This is what I have put together so far: > > According to various sources, Harold George Kalakosky had at least two wives; Violet Vivian Haverty, and Lola Oliver. He could have had more but I don’t have information that would support more wives. I believe he was married to Violet first and had a son named Donald Harold Kalakosky. He might have had other children with Violet, I simply don’t know. Donald had a son named Donald Harold Kalakosky Jr.. Harold George later married Lola Oliver (my grandmother) and had a son (my father). > > I know that Harold was married to Lola simply from interview knowledge gained from speaking with Lola herself. > > I also know that Harold was married to Violet from information on Donald Harold Kalakosky’s application for a Social Security Number in 1949 (for which I have a copy) > > Additional supporting evidence of connection is that all these records show redundant locations in either central Washington State or Oregon. Because of the rarity of the Kalakosky name, I am almost 100% confident that they all pertain to the same Harold George Kalakosky. > > >From an undisclosed source, I have learned that Harold George Kalakosky left Lola and set to sea, where he supposedly faked his death. If in fact he did not die at sea he would surely be deceased by now. Unfortunately, I can find no listing of his actual death in any state records. It makes me wonder where and how he died, or if he maybe died while using an alias. > > This sums up the foundation of the information I have at this time (18 February 2004). I will add more tidbits of information as they are uncovered. > > I have recently spoken with a gentleman named Jamie Martin who said he is directly related to some Kalakosky’s. The Kalakosky’s he has knowledge about are from the eastern United States, mainly the New England area. I spoke with his grandmother who provided me with a great deal of information but she insisted that the Kalakosky name is spelled KOLAKOWSKI. This led me to believe that it is a very good possibility that the name Kolakowski could have been changed to Kalakosky at some pint in time. Even though I got a great deal of information from Jamie and his grandmother, I have yet to establish a link to the Kalakosky’s that I know I’m related to. > > If you recognize any of the people or information listed here, PLEASE contact me. I have spent roughly 4 years researching the Kalakosky name and have gotten no further than my grandfather (Harold George Kalakosky). > > Sincerely, > Bryson > Family Genealogist > genealogy@ibryson.com > My genealogy website: www.ibryson.com > > > > > ==== ORWASHIN Mailing List ==== > Visit the Oregon GenWeb Project > http://www.rootsweb.com/~orgenweb/ >
