Rachel died 22 Feb 1908 Washington Co, Oregon (Oregon Death Index) while Andrew died 18 Mar 1922 Portland, Multnomah Co, Oregon (Oregon Death Index) after two more marriages which both ended in divorce ("Autobiography of Miss Kitty May Ellis", copyright 2005, edited Will Johnson, privately printed.) They had two children that I know of: 1) Perry Ellis b Oct 1866 Iowa died 10 Jan 1932 Marion Co, Oregon (Oregon Death Index) married 17 Mar 1909 (Oregon Marriage Index) to Josephine R Laws b abt 1890 Illinois (1910 census) children: Roberta Ellis 1910, Evelyn Ellis 1911, Elma Ellis 1913 2) Kitty May Ellis b 6 Sep 1869 "During a Cyclone, 16 miles north of Eldora, Hardin Co, Iowa" ("Autobiography", op cit.) died 1963 in Clearview, Snohomish Co, Washington. In Sep 1879 the family moved to Tarkio, Atchison Co, Missouri. They stayed in Missouri for 3 1/2 years and in Mar 1883 moved on to Spokane Falls, Washington (state). There is or was a post office called Ellis and they are said by Kitty to have lived in that place. They did not stay in Ellis PO long and next appear in my records in 1900 Hillsboro, District 157, page 1B, Washington Co, Oregon. Rachel died in that county in 1908 but I have not yet found Andrew in the 1910 census. Kitty, Perry and his new wife however are there in Washington Co. Perry and Kitty were both committed to the Salem Mental Hospital, Salem, Marion Co, Oregon and Perry is still there in the 1920 and 1930 census. I have not found Kitty in 1920 but in 1930 she is in Portland, Multnomah Co, Oregon working as a Practical Nurse for a private family. Since this is where her father died, it's possible she is living there for that reason. Her brother however did not die until 1932. Miss Kitty May Ellis stayed in Portland until 1941 supposedly and then moved on to Clearview, Snohomish Co, Washington where she lived until her death at the age of 94. She never married and states that her father was such a bull-headed and intolerable brute that she never wanted to have any children for fear of passing on this characteristic. She wrote over a hundred notebooks that constitute her diary and I am in the long process of sorting out the interesting from the dull. Part of this has been privately published but doesn't give much details on her ancestors. The earliest known place for them is Hardin Co, Iowa but I cannot find them there in the 1870 census nor anywhere else, and cannot find them yet in the 1880. So if any of this sounds familiar or if anyone can add details from various lookups, I would appreciate that
ITEMS OF INTEREST Gathered from the Four Corners of the County Personal and Social Mention --------------- A Jewelry Store to Be Opened In Beaverton --- Mr. Watts and His Extracted Beef -- Notes to Suit the Times --------------- H. C. WATTS will have the name of the party published who stole his salt beef unless the guilty one settles for it at once. His name will appear in our next issue unless a settlement is made beforehand. We admire the unmitigated gall of a man who squanders national bank funds among the "400" of Canada, but may the devil fly away with a reprobate who robs Beaverton pork barrels and hen roosts and then eats it all himself without offering us a bite to "keep mum." We'll hang his name upon the church steeple with our dirty socks to bleach out under the scorching rays of the bleak November sun, emblozon it (the name) in letters of "brass" to make the angels weep, put it in a can on a dog's tail, and wind up the entertainment by publishing his name to the four corners of the globe and then bury it in oblivion and rotten carion to preserve it (the carion) from the crows -- that is, if he doesn't divvy up next time. Friend WEATHERRED, the man at the county courthouse who writes down and keeps on the interior track of the records of our reputable people, sent us word on the back of a piece of spring poetry -- using a postage stamp paid for by our overburdened taxable citizens -- to get up something funny to correspond withthe weather or otherwise. We take it otherwise, as the weather is so far out of sight that even the prophets are nonplussed. However, worthy recorder of deeds good and evil, we think we can safely and real-estate (?) that it will be the "propah capah" for you to disrobe and prepare to be in the swim about the next issue. In the meantime, THE CHRONICLE'S "Dennis Mud" will proceed to set the machinery of his think factory in motion. A bevy of young ladies and gentlemen assembled at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. BEHARRELL at Progress on Thursday evening last as the guests of Miss Ethel BEHARRELL. The young folks had a splendid time, due to the fact that the hostess made a charming entertainer. The following were in attendance: Misses Ethel (paper has been taped together here but will try to decipher) BEHARRELL, Maggie TITUS(?), Ida FRANCIS, Lillie STEPHENS, Jessie STEPHENS, Allie KELLEY (of Beaverton), Ethel GRAVES, May KINGLEY, and Clara BROWN, Messrs. Drs. ROBINSON and PARENT reduced the fracture and the patient is as comfortable as possible under the circumstances. We mailed all correspondents envelopes, paper and stamps this week. A young lady arrived on an eighteen or twenty years' visit at his home on the 22d ult. The mother is doing well, while the little stranger must be healthy, judging from the fact that it brought a powerful pair of lungs into existence. The tail end of March looked like it had just escaped from the clutches of its mother-in-law. It dashed out like a roaring mad bull and was born up to its neck in water. Miss Alice DOWNING, who has been visiting her mother and brother in Beaverton, returned to Dayton, Yamhill county on Monday, to resume charge of her school near that place. Rev. A. R. FROM CEDAR MILL (From the Chronicle correspondent) When John (No last name was given here - don't know why) is visiting in Cedar Mill some people seem deeply interested concerning the time he departs from his lady love. John is all right, even if he does go home between two days some times. Rev. WIGSTAD, minister of Beaverton, delivered a very interesting missionary sermon at the M.E. church of this place on Sunday last. His address was very much enjoyed by those present. U.S. ALLEN, formerly of Ohio, has moved into G. H. REEVE'S farm, which he has leased for two years. Mr. ALLEN is pleased with the country and intends to make Oregon his future home. Our Sunday school has a very large attendance. Much interest is evinced by the young people. Our school will continue during the summer with Mrs. I. EVERSON as superintendent. For the benefit of the curious we will state that the location of our village is seven miles west of Portland, nine miles east of Hillsboro and three miles northeast of Beaverton. If those who are not familiar with the way from Beaverton to Cedar Mill will call on Walter REEVES, he will gladly conduct them in safety to their destination. J. SAMMONS, who recently lost his shop by fire, has rebuilt and is doing a rushing business, with William HILGERS, recently of Chicago, as blacksmith. Charles and Henry BURTON, sons of Crit. BURTON, started on Tuesday last week for Chicago, which place they intend to make their future home. The school officers elected at the last meeting were Mrs. B. MILLAR, J. C. SMITH and Philip STREET as directors, and Charles HICKELTHIER as clerk. The people of Cedar Mill met on Tuesday of last week and rebuilt the cemetery fence, which was blown down during the last snowstorm. Mrs. SMITH of East Portland was buried in the Cedar Mill cemetery on (the rest of this item is torn away - the paper is very ragged) Here we are, apparently forgotten by the county papers. When it comes to paying taxes we are forcibly reminded that we still exist. Miss Mary WALKER, who has been attending school at Pacific University, spent vacation with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. H. WALKER. Miss Lelah POMEROY, who has been visiting her sister, Mrs. A. KIRTZ, returned to her home at Greenville on Wednesday last. Lincoln YOUNG and W. KYLE of Portland visited friends and relatives of his place lasst Sunday. Mrs. Dell DICKENS of Gales Creek is visiting her brother, A. SYLVAN NEWS (From the Chronicle correspondent) This is a joint district of one section in Multnomah county and part of sections one and seven in Washington county. Sylvan is three miles west of Portland, two miles from Portland Height and one mile from Mount Zion, which name has been established sine "58. A great many get mixed on account of this place being erroneously called Zion Town. Letters often come here directed to Zion Town. Sylvan is the correct name of this postoffice, which name was given it by order of the citizens 3 1/2 years ago. We were obliged to select a name which would not conflict with any other office in the state, and so Sylvan was chosen. The oldest settler in this neighborhood is N.B. Jones, who has a father lying in our little cemetery, who with his son came here in the '50s. N.B. is known by the neighbors as "the mayor," and when he comes out in his tall hat, he towers up pretty well. Messrs. E. and J. Galley comes next in the line of long residents, and then J.H. Gove, who is mourning over the terrible death of his unfortunate son in Portland last week. We are a few feet above you folks in Beaverton, and enjoy better roads at present, but by the way the reports shake us lately you will soon be able to raise yourselves out of the mud in great shape. We have one general merchandise store, a barber shop, meat market, hotel and saloon. D. W. Prince is postmaster and merchant, James Reeves runs the Mansion House and barroom and Harvey Huntington cuts up meat, dissects calves and sells sausage for the appreciative public. We need a blacksmith shop, and there is a good opening here for a smith of the right sort. We have three mails a week and expect to get a daily mail soon. We have a good school of about 100 pupils, with C.E. Hedge as principal, and one assistant. We are talking of building a four-room schoolhouse for a graded school. We are one-half mile from Barnes Heights electric line with five cents fare to First street, Portland. A number of fine residences will be built on the Barnes road the coming summer. There are many fine views from some of the high points in our neighborhood. Overlooking the western valley we see Beaverton, Hillsboro and Forest Grove, with their fine buildings and productive farms nestling in the lowlands with stately fir groves as a background, thus making a panoramic view grand to behold. Then to the northeast we get a beautiful view of the city of Portland, and far beyond is the majestic Columbia glimmering in the sun, and the little city of Vancouver resting in the lap of the foothills of the Cascade range, all of which makes a fairy picture hard to portray. One has only to take a ride around the boulevard to witness this picture, which will well repay him for his trouble. ................................. Next time - News from Cedar Mill
